762 HON . WILLIAM A. HENRY FIRST JUDGE FROM NOVA SCOTIA ON THE BENCH OF THE SUPREME COURT OF CANADA Among Nova Scotia's "Fathers of Confederation" after Hon. Dr. Tupper, none was more prominent or took a larger part in the deliberations leading up to Confederation than Hon. William A. Henry. He was present at the Charlottetown and Quebec Conferences and, after the latter, accompanied the delegates from the Maritime Provinces upon their junketing expedition to "sell"-to use the up to date expression-Con- federation to Canada. He was one of "the sixteen scamps with the Treasuries of three Provinces in their hands", as Howe described them, who went to London in 1866 to assist in the drafting of the necessary legislation. Yet nothing has ever been written of him and no recognition was ever made of his services for Confederation . The other delegates had been rewarded.' McCully became a Senator and afterwards a Judge; so did Ritchie,°-who was not a delegate either to Charlottetown or Quebec;' Archibald was a Senator and later Lieutenant- Governor successively of Manitoba and Nova Scotia; and Dickey 4 who was not in London was made a Senator. Henry, despite his greater claims, was overlooked . A sketch of his life and some appreciation of his services seems to be suggested. Save for an amusing, but not altogether unkind, reference to him in Sir Robert Borden's "Mevio-irs", 5 I know nothing that has been written about him since his obituary notices. Pelletier A thesis submitted to the Department of History in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada December 2010 Copyright © Yves Y. Pelletier, 2010 Abstract Sir John A. Macdonald has been a political figure frequently referenced in Canadian history. Yet no study has explored the evolution of his public memory. This study provides a focused examination of the attempts by Canada’s federal political parties to shape Macdonald’s public memory. The period of study began immediately following the death of Sir John A. Macdonald on June 6, 1891 and continued until the Centennial Celebrations of Confederation in 1967. The study first aims to identify and analyze events and activities organized or supported by Canada’s federal political class which provide opportunities to shape Macdonald’s public memory. The study then explores through the lens of official memory their motivation to engage in his commemoration and to shape his memory in specific ways. The objective of this study is to answer two specific research questions. The first asks if Canada’ federal political leaders were interested and successful in shaping Macdonald’s public memory during the period of study to allow the emergence of a seemingly national hegemonic figure acceptable to both political parties. The second asks if the federal political parties’ attempts to depict Macdonald as a unifying national symbol were picked up in the media in Ontario and Quebec and in both official languages, thereby reinforcing his hegemonic status for the federal political class.

Guide to African American Manuscripts In the Collection of the Virginia Historical Society A [Abner, C?], letter, 1859. 1 p. Mss2Ab722a1. Written at Charleston, S.C., to E. Kingsland, this letter of 18 November 1859 describes a visit to the slave pens in Richmond. The traveler had stopped there on the way to Charleston from Washington, D.C. He describes in particular the treatment of young African American girls at the slave pen. Accomack County, commissioner of revenue, personal property tax book, ca. 1840. 42 pp. Mss4AC2753a1. Contains a list of residents’ taxable property, including slaves by age groups, horses, cattle, clocks, watches, carriages, buggies, and gigs. Free African Americans are listed separately, and notes about age and occupation sometimes accompany the names. Adams family papers, 1698–1792. 222 items. Mss1Ad198a. Microfilm reels C001 and C321. Primarily the papers of Thomas Adams (1730–1788), merchant of Richmond, Va., and London, Eng. Section 15 contains a letter dated 14 January 1768 from John Mercer to his son James. The writer wanted to send several slaves to James but was delayed because of poor weather conditions. Adams family papers, 1792–1862. 41 items. Mss1Ad198b. Concerns Adams and related Withers family members of the Petersburg area. Section 4 includes an account dated 23 February 1860 of John Thomas, a free African American, with Ursila Ruffin for boarding and nursing services in 1859.
