CLUB SITES BRYNICH & PANDY HOULD I have kept my mouth shut? These were the words S filtering through my brain moments after I was asked to run the rule over Brynich in South Wales, which (as most of you will probably know) is one of the Club’s most recent acquisitions from the ‘private sector’. I’ve never been to Brynich, but it carries quite a reputation as an award-winning site, and word of its popularity had spread up north. The problem is that I’m not that keen on the concept of ‘popular’ in the private-sector sense of the word, but some devious soul at CCHQ dangled the carrot which is Pandy before my lascivious eye. This meant that I was hooked, because we’ve been to Pandy loads of times, and it’s around the site, and just across the road, the MAIN IMAGE: The my kind of place. So there it was – “Yes, yes, Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal slides Afon Nedd Fechan, near Ystradfellte yes,” I said, slavering all over the phone, slowly by. • News for October 2009
News for October 2009 Thursday 1st October - report from Bill Balchin: The first of October started perfectly with bright skies, little wind and a crisp feel in the air for the eighteen starters from Rexam with John Huish in the lead. It gets hard to make a different route between two well used points, so after Swan Lane, Frampton End, Chaingate Lane and Mapleridge Lane John took us half way up the hill out of Horton then turned left past Horton Manor and church along to Hawksbury. Although we often return on this road it is seldom used on the outward trip. The views over the Berkley Vale to your left were excellent in the clear air and bright sun. After the climb towards Hawksbury Upton we went left and right into Starveal Lane. Then just before Didmarton took a left turn to cut out a bit of main road riding. The perfect weather brought out a large contingent of cyclists from Bath to the Royal Oak, plus several others from Bristol and also a fair number of civilians - among them our own John Bishop who had previously ridden to Ashton but had got there a week early. Yes, a lot of us have done that. The pub struggled a bit with the numbers, some had the two course special and had an hour wait between main course and dessert. At two o'clock there was a mass departure into the afternoon sunshine. Unusually, the both the Bristol and Bath pelotons set off together on the same route. (see picture left).

  • Wye Valley Woodland Priority Area Synopsis
WOODLAND ECOSYSTEM GROUP PRIORITY ACTION AREA WYE VALLEY WOODLANDS : HIMALAYAN BALSAM CONTROL Summary The Wye Valley Woodlands SAC extends to over 916 hectares of woodland and in Wales comprises 9 individual component Sites of Special Scientific Interest. The Wye Valley Woodlands are widely regarded as one of the most important areas for woodland conservation within Britain. In recent times (probably over the last 5 years or so), Himalayan balsam has spread into several woodland SSSIs that make up the Welsh part of the SAC. Sites that are particularly affected are Lower Hael Wood SSSI and Graig Wood SSSI to the south of Redbrook. At these sites, Himalayan balsam has spread rapidly along existing tracks and paths. Where trees have been removed or fallen naturally they are being replaced by dense stands of Himalayan balsam which is smothering the native flora and hindering tree regeneration. This plant species has also been recorded at other SSSIs in the Wye Valley including Fiddlers Elbow north of Monmouth and Blackcliff-Wyndcliff near Tintern. Ironically the spread of this non-native species has benefited from past Ravine Wood LIFE work within the SAC to improve their condition by increasing the amount of light reaching the woodland floor particularly in Graig Wood SSSI. To date attempts have been made to control the plant through volunteer work tasks with only limited success. Himalayan balsam is an annual with each plant capable of producing 1,000s of seeds. Whilst it is an easy plant to control (easy to uproot and prevent it from flowering), the amount of seed produce makes it a hard task.
