No current Talk conversations about this book. This is another good book in the Starfist series. It continues to follow the men in the 34th FIST marine unit and, as before, does a wonderful job of doing so. The characters are interesting and the battles are well written. The book blurb is a wee bit misleading though in stating that the marines must use “weaponry three hundred years out of date”. You might get the impression that the marines, for some bizarre reason, didn’t get the modern weapons they should have had. This is not the case. They’re using “out of date” weaponry because the enemy is using “out of date” weaponry for which modern weaponry is, ineffective. The latter, I found somewhat surprising. This brings me to the one gripe I have about the book. It’s depiction of the history of armor (tanks) in the future is not really believable for me personally. It talks about the “last” battle tank being huge and only being able to drive on 20% of the surface of the earth (pretty much only on paved roads). I do not think anyone would actually build such a silly thing. In the book armored vehicles became obsolete 300 years ago. I do not find that very believable either. From several of the passages and descriptions in this book I get the feeling that David Sherman’s marine background shows through with a, not so slight, negative attitude against other military branches. In this case the armored combat units. But then, maybe I’m a wee bit biased as well since I spent quite some time driving around in those tin cans in the Swedish military (and loved every minute of it).

We’ll meet some people - seemingly ordinary people - that so desperately wanted someone to lead them to enlightenment that they allowed themselves to be slowly manipulated into paying to participate in weirder and weirder “exercises” until they finally agreed to be actual slaves. And part of, basically, a harem. We’ll meet Keith Raniere [ruh near ee], the devious and perverted mastermind at the center of all of this, who used his experience at Amway - a Michigan-based multi-level marketing company - and then borrowed a lot from Scientology, to make people think that he was some kind of once-in-a-lifetime guru spiritual Jedi who had the answer to all of your - and all of the WORLD’S - problems.

A pointedly post 9/11 updating of Glen A. Larson’s 1970s broadcast series of the same name, the new Battlestar has produced ardent fan communities across the USA. Thanks to its international circulation, it has also generated a strong global audience. Much of its popularity derives from the creative liberties that executive producers Ronald D. Moore and David Eick have taken with Larson’s series. Far from being a niche sf programme, it reworks the original with more and stronger female characters, and has season-spanning serial drama storylines as soap operatic as they are space operatic. Raniere recruited individuals into organizations he founded, purportedly for their own benefit, and then exploited them—for power, for profit, or for sex. The sentence imposed on Raniere should reflect the immeasurable damage he has done to his victims. To protect the public from the defendant, and to justly punish his years of crime and exploitation, the Court should impose a Guidelines sentence of life imprisonment. Raniere’s post-conviction conduct reflects his total denial of culpability for the crimes of which he was convicted. While in prison, Raniere continues to regularly contact his supporters and has expressed contempt for his victims, the prosecution, and the Court.
