At the dawn of the ’90s, the trip hop wave overtook the UK with an electronica sound influenced by Jamaican music and hip hop beats. With their chloroformed rhythms and heavy ambience, Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky, Morcheeba and several other outfits invented a kind of dark, futuristic and often cinematic soul music. Here’s a spotlight on 10 from a genre with blurred sonic borders but a definitive musical influence. Flatbush Zombies 3001: A Laced Odyssey. Flatbush Zombies Prove Age Is Just a Number in New “Trade-Off” Video. The Flatbush Zombies have been known to drop dope music videos for some time now. Last week (Sept. 16) they upheld their rep once more by releasing their Jayga Rayn-directed short film "65 to Life" as the music video to their song "Trade-Off." Though Meechy Darko, Zombie Juice and Erick Arc Elliott are nowhere to be found in the visual, the short film follows some badass females on a night of wild adventure. First, the ladies are face to face with a mean-looking kingpin who says they owe him a ridiculous amount of money and only have 24 hours to get it to him. Strapped for cash, the duo robs a convenience store and are surprised they actually get away with the mini stick-up. Though they've got gray hairs and little ones at home in bed, the two women ride their motorcycle all around town, getting drunk with friends and feasting on delicious-looking street food. They party all night, even buying milk at the same store they robbed hours earlier, and then return home at sunrise only to get a call from their boss man looking for his guap. You gotta see the whole thing to believe it. The Brooklyn-based trio has been bubbling for years but just dropped their debut album 3001: A Laced Odyssey back in March, a joyous release for any eager FBZ fan. The Beast Coast mainstays' first official LP debuted at No. 10 on the Billboard charts and they've been on tour ever since. But before they headed out, XXL caught up with the guys for the Spring 2016 issue and discussed everything from the creative process to their obsession with comic books. Check that out here.
