his month sees the start of Lent, the season of penitence, self-examination and fasting running up to Easter. Fasting can T be a neglected discipline, but it plays an important part in the Christian life. Jesus began His earthly ministry by fasting in the wilderness for 40 days and He taught His disciples to fast (i.e. not if but ‘when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen.’ (Matthew 6:17,18). Why Fast? Firstly, giving up something in my life underlines my desire to put God first in my life. Secondly, fasting shows me how much I depend on things other than God in my life, so I can surrender my idols to Him. Thirdly, fasting encourages me to have a deeper hunger and dependency for God in my life. Therefore, fasting gives me space to humbly focus on God for His strength, provision, and wisdom and results in a more intimate relationship with Christ. It also enables the Holy Spirit to reveal my true spiritual condition, leading to brokenness, repentance, and a transformed life, with a heart more attentive to God. How can I fast? Usually fasting involves missing one or two meals during the day, although some can‘t abstain from food for medical reasons. It might also include abstaining or limiting the time I give to television, alcohol or social media. However, Lent can also be a time to embrace new spiritual disciplines e.g. joining a study group, ‗random acts of kindness‘, or giving more time to prayer and Bible study. Whatever you do, make Lent count this year!

ebruary is a bit of a ‗bridging month‘. On the 2nd, Candlemas, we say a final goodbye to Christmas, and then turn our attention to the Baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist and St Valentine‘s Day. F Only 12 days after that and we will be into Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday and Lent – with Easter looming up in the distance. With so much going on, we hope you find your February satisfying. In any case, we have loads to offer you this month, from articles on Lent, Prayer and Fasting, to articles on Romance and Love. February also brings important anniversaries on Anne Frank, Nelson Mandela, not to mention YouTube. If you feel like writing an article please, please do so, it will be more than welcome.

~ St Andrew’s Church ~ 1 When Education For ALL Children Arrived

50 years ago, on 17th February 1870, the Elementary Education Act – commonly known as Forster‘s Education Act – was introduced in and Wales. It provided a framework for the education of 1 all children between five and 12. Many people objected to the concept of universal education, including the upper classes, who wanted to keep educational privileges for themselves, and employers who feared losing cheap labour. But there was also a feeling that the newly enfranchised classes should be better educated. The churches in general had doubts about the Act, worrying that they would lose their influence on young people. The Earl of Shaftesbury, 20 years earlier, had feared national education would be ―a death warrant to the teaching of the evangelical religion‖. Before 1870, elementary education was provided largely by the Church of England‘s National Society and the nonconformist British and Foreign School Society. In fact, in the 15 years after the Act, the number of Church of England schools rose from 6,382 to 11,864, and in the 21st century church schools are still flourishing. After the Act, however, the state did become increasingly involved with further reforms: and after 1880 attendance was made compulsory for children until they were 12. Anxious And Lonely? Come To Church! oung people who go to church are less likely to struggle with anxiety than those who do not go to church (22% compared to 33%.) Fewer church goers are also lonely and isolated (16% Y compared to 31 %) In a survey almost one third of all young people reported feeling sad or depressed; this was compared with 18 per cent among young practising Christians. The survey is published in The Connected Generation, commissioned by the Barna Group in partnership with World Vision. The full report can be seen at theconnectedgeneration.com.

Love in a bag I asked my nephew whether he bought his wife anything for Valentine’s Day, and he said he had bought her a belt and a bag. When I commented that I am sure she would appreciate them, he agreed: “Yes, and hopefully the vacuum cleaner will work better now.”

All In the Month Of February

150 years ago, on 17th Feb 1870 that the Elementary It was: Education Act (commonly known as Forster‘s Education Act) was introduced in England and Wales. It provided a framework for the education of all children aged between five and 12. Many people objected to it, including the upper classes who wanted to keep educational privileges for themselves, and employers who feared losing cheap labour. 125 years ago, on 14th Feb 1895 that Oscar Wilde‘s play The Importance of Being Earnest was performed for the first time, at St James‘s Theatre in London. 90 years ago, on 18th Feb 1930 that the dwarf planet Pluto was discovered by American astronomer Clyde Tombaugh.  8 ~ St Andrew’s Church ~ 75 years ago, in Feb/Mar 1945 that Anne Frank, Dutch Jewish diarist and Holocaust victim died in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, at the age of 15, probably from typhus. Known for The Diary of a Young Girl. Also 75 years ago, on 21st Feb 1945 that Eric Liddell, Scottish athlete, died. He became an Olympic gold medallist in 1924 for the 400m. Because of his religious convictions he had withdrawn from the 100m heats held on a Sunday and entered (and won) the 400m heats. He died in a WWII internment camp in China, aged 43. 70 years ago, on 8th Feb 1950 that the Stasi, the East German secret police force, was established. It was not dissolved until 1990, when numerous Stasi officials were subsequently prosecuted for their crimes. Millions of East German citizens were then allowed to see the extensive documentation the Stasi had compiled against them through their network of informants. 15 years ago, on 14th Feb 2005 that the popular video-sharing website YouTube was founded. (It was officially launched in November after more development and testing.)  Remembering Anne Frank & Her Diary

nne Frank, the Dutch Jewish diarist and Holocaust victim, died 75 years ago, in February 1945, in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp at the age of 15 – probably from typhus. She is known for writing The A Diary of a Young Girl, an account of how she and seven others were hidden in a secret annex to escape the Nazis. The group had been arrested the previous August, and only Anne‘s father Otto survived the war. At first it was believed they had been betrayed, but it is now thought possible that they were discovered by accident. T he Diary, which Anne – who was born in Germany – started writing at the age of 13, is the story of how ordinary people risked their lives to help those in need, but it says little about the unclear relationship the Dutch had with Nazi Germany. Up to 80% of the Dutch Jewish population were killed during the war – the second highest percentage after Poland. The Diary, which had been kept safe by Otto‘s secretary, Miep Gies, was published in English in 1952 and has since been translated into more than 60 languages. The Anne Frank House, a museum in Amsterdam, opened in May 1960. Asteroid 5535 Anne Frank was named in Anne‘s honour in 1995.

25 February – Shrove Tuesday: Pancake Day ver wonder why we eat pancakes just before Lent? The tradition dates back to Anglo-Saxon times, when Christians spent Lent in repentance and severe fasting. E So on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, the church bell would summon them to confession, where they would be ‗shriven‘, or absolved from their sins, which gives us Shrove Tuesday. At home, they would then eat up their last eggs and fat, and making a pancake was the easiest way to do this. For the next 47 days, they pretty well starved themselves. Pancakes feature in cookery books as far back as 1439, and today‘s pancake races are in remembrance of a panicked woman back in 1445 in Olney, Buckinghamshire. She was making pancakes when she heard the shriving bell calling her to confession. Afraid she‘d be late, she ran to the church in a panic, still in her apron, and still holding the pan. Flipping pancakes is also centuries old. A poem from Pasquil‘s Palin in 1619 runs: ―And every man and maide doe take their turne, And tosse their Pancakes up for feare they burne.‖ Some people have noted that the ingredients of pancakes can be used to highlight four significant things about this time of year: eggs stand for creation, flour is the staff of life, while salt keeps things wholesome, and milk stands for purity. Shrove Tuesday is always 47 days before Easter Sunday and falls between 3rd February and 9th March.

~ St Andrew’s Church ~ 11 Bill’s Gardening Tips ~ February 2020

t's still cold but Spring is on the way and the days are getting longer. February is a good time for getting ahead with a little preparation. I Prepare any seed beds by digging over and warming up the soil with fleece or cloches. Check that your tools are ok and machinery is working. Get rid of perennial weeds, roots and all, before the weather warms up. Cut back shrubs such as cornus to the base. Cut back ornamental grasses to the ground. Prune Summer flowering clematis. Trim heathers to stop them becoming leggy. Prune winter flowering shrubs such as mahonia and viburnum. Remove faded flowers from winter pansies. Lift and divide snowdrops 'in the green' to provide more plants. Keep off frosty lawns. Trim deciduous hedges before birds begin to nest. Keep feeding the birds. Trim back ivy. Cheers Bill

Could An Ambulance even find You?

ou and your friends know where you live, but could a 999 crew find you? Paramedics warn that too many people do not make their house Y numbers clear. That means paramedics are wasting valuable time looking for clues as to which house is which, while shrubs and rubbish bins often obscure the numbers. In an emergency, even a few minutes can mean life or death. So, make sure that your house can be quickly found. Make sure that your house number is easily visible from the street. If your house has got a name, put the house number next to it as well, so that in an emergency, the ambulances can reach you in time.

12 ~ St Andrew’s Church ~ How Old Is Grandma?

tay with this, the answer is at the end .. It will blow you away. One evening a grandson was talking to his grandmother about current events. The grandson asked his grandmother what she thought about the computer S age and just things in general. The Grandmother replied, "Well, let me think a minute, I was born before: television, penicillin, polio shots, frozen foods, Xerox, contact lenses and Frisbees. There were no: credit cards, laser beams or ball-point pens. Man had not yet invented: air conditioners, dishwashers, clothes dryers and the clothes were hung out to dry in the fresh air and man hadn't yet walked on the moon. Your Grandfather and I got married first and then lived together. Every family had a father and a mother. Until I was 25, I called every man older than me, "Sir." And after I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man with a title, "Sir." We were before gay-rights, computer-dating, dual careers, day care centres and group therapy. Our lives were governed by the Ten Commandments, good judgment, and common sense. We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong and to stand up and take responsibility for our actions. We thought fast food was what people ate during Lent. Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your cousins. Draft dodgers were those who closed front doors as the evening breeze started. Time-sharing meant time the family spent together in the evenings and weekends — not purchasing condominiums. We never heard of FM radios, tape decks, CD's, electric typewriters, yogurt, or guys wearing earrings. We listened to Big Bands, Jack Benny, and the President's speeches on our radios. If you saw anything with 'Made in Japan' on it, it was junk. The term 'making out' referred to how you did on your school exam. Pizza Hut, McDonald's,and instant coffee were unheard of. We had 5 & dime stores where you could actually buy things for 5 and 10 cents. Ice-cream cones, phone calls, rides on a streetcar, and a Pepsi were all a nickel. And if you didn't want to splurge, you could spend your nickel on enough stamps to mail 1 letter and 2 postcards. You could buy a new Ford Coupe for $600,but who could afford one? Too bad, because gas was 11 cents a gallon. In my day: grass was mowed, coke was a cold drink, pot was something your mother cooked in and rock music was your grandmother's lullaby. Aids were helpers in the Principal's office, chip meant a piece of wood, hardware was found in a hardware store and software wasn't even a word. We were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a husband to have a baby. We volunteered to protect our precious country. No wonder people call us "old and confused" and say there is a generation gap. How old do you think I am? Read on to see, pretty scary if you think about it and pretty sad at the same time. Are youready?? This woman would be only 67 years old. She would have been born in late 1952.

~ St Andrew’s Church ~ 13 Where is love?

n this month, when we celebrate St Valentine‘s Day, this poignant question is one many people will be asking, especially the young and hopeful. Perhaps you remember these words from the beautiful song in Lionel I Bart‘s musical, Oliver? The young street boy Oliver Twist sings plaintively of his longing to find ‗someone who I can mean something to‘. The need to find love is a fundamental requirement of human flourishing, and it is there within us all, young and old alike. But where do we find such love? The natural thing is to assume that it can be found in another person, the person of our dreams. Romantic love seems to offer the answer to our longing, but reality is often different. Once the shine has worn off a relationship, we see the other person as they really are – another fragile human being also searching for love. So, for many the search begins again, an endless looking for the elusive partner who will love us without condition.  Oliver comes near to answering his own question when he sings, ‗Does it come from skies above?‘ The only love that can satisfy the deep longing of the human heart does in fact come ‗from above‘. It comes from heaven, and it comes to us from God in the form of a person, Jesus Christ. He was the embodiment of the love of God, and through His life and death demonstrated the enormity of the love that God has for each of us. Here is a love like no other – reliable, sure, unchanging, healing, accepting. Human love is a wonderful blessing, but divine love alone can meet our need. In God alone we find the perfect Someone, the One to whom who we can mean something. Anxious And Lonely? Come To Church!

oung people who go to church are less likely to struggle with anxiety than those who do not go to church (22% compared to 33%.)
