SeaWorld Orlando in Florida SeaWorld is a very popular theme park and marine-life zoo in Orlando, Florida. The park hosts many educational programs, shows, exhibitions and other fun experiences, making it immensely popular with families, teachers and students. This 200-acres marine life theme park, is filled with aquatic fun and thrilling adventures. This park is currently being operated and managed by the Sea World Parks and Entertainment, a subsidiary of the Blackstone Group. The smashing success of the first SeaWorld Park prompted the founders to open another park at a different location; the SeaWorld Park at Ohio was opened in 1968, and was soon followed by the establishment of the SeaWorld, Orlando in the year 1973. Orlando was selected as an ideal location due to its pleasant climate almost all through the year. Also, with the opening of the Walt Disney parks, a large number of visitors were already visiting the city. SeaWorld in Orlando, unlike other theme parks has a refreshing landscape, with no broken up themed islands in the park. The main landscaping feature of the park is its pathways with animal enclosures on either side. The main entrance to the park is decorated with lush tropical landscaping, which has a Florida-based theme, a huge artificial freshwater marina, and an iconic lighthouse based on a Shamu theme. The neighboring park, Discovery Cove, along with the SeaWorld, forms a greater entertainment area, which is an ideal destination for vacationers. SeaWorld, Orlando, offers many shows, exhibitions, rides, and park experiences. Live shows, animal exhibits, and the 3D computer animated films at the Theater Dome promise the visitors a great time. -

The ecological success of Cnidaria is predicated on several fascinating organismal innovations including symbiosis, colonial body plans and elaborate life histories, however, understanding the origins and subsequent diversification of these traits remains difficult due to persistent uncertainty surrounding the evolutionary relationships within Cnidaria. While recent phylogenomic studies have advanced our knowledge of the cnidarian tree of life, no analysis to date has included genome scale data for each major cnidarian lineage. Results: Here we describe a well-supported hypothesis for cnidarian phylogeny based on phylogenomic analyses of new and existing genome scale data that includes representatives of all cnidarian classes. -

OPEN LETTER Joel K. Manby President, CEO, and Director SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment 9205 South Park Center Loop, #400 Orlando, FL 32819 Dear Mr. Manby, On behalf of our more than 6.5 million members and supporters, our organizations are writing this open letter to you to request the voluntary release of the necropsy (animal autopsy) report and clinical history for Tilikum to the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), the federal agency responsible for the conservation and management of marine mammals. Marine-mammal exhibition facilities such as SeaWorld are required to obtain permits to capture from the wild or import marine mammals for public display under the U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA), which was passed in 1972. When Tilikum was first imported into the United States in 1992, these permits contained special conditions established by the NMFS. In his case, this included a standard requirement to submit his necropsy and clinical history results to the NMFS when he eventually passed away. These conditions also apply to his progeny, including his granddaughter Kyara, who died of suspected pneumonia on July 24th at SeaWorld San Antonio at only 3 months of age, and at least eight other offspring who are still alive today. We strongly urge SeaWorld not only to comply with this legal requirement but also to adopt this standard voluntarily for all cetaceans in its care. In doing so, SeaWorld would set an admirable and progressive industry standard and satisfy the strong public interest in the health and welfare of these animals. Indeed, reasonable transparency regarding health records is essential to legitimate marine-animal rescue and rehabilitation work, a role that SeaWorld claims is integral to its mission. -

Their calcareous tubes are usually embedded in the coral skeleton and can be closed by an operculum. Tubes not overgrown by coral tissue either remain bare or become covered by algae. Despite their widespread distribution, high abundance and striking appearance, little is known about the impact of these worms on their hosts. We quantifed visible coral damage caused by Spirobranchus in Curaçao (Southern Caribbean) and found that 62.6% of worm opercula (n = 1323) caused abrasions and tissue loss in their hosts. Filamentous turf algae, known to be potentially harmful to corals, covered 76.9% of the opercula. Examination of the six most frequently inhabited host species showed a variation in the damage percentages, although this was independent of the presence of epibiotic algae on 78.4% of all opercula. Since injured corals are more susceptible to diseases, the overall nega- tive impact of Spirobranchus worms on their hosts may be more severe than previously assumed. This revenue is to be used for the purposes of restoration, conservation, recreation, water resource development, historical preservation and capital improvements to the acquired land and water. The program is intended to accomplish environmental restoration, enhance public access and recreational enjoyment, promote long-term management goals and facilitate water resource development. The water management districts create a five-year plan that identifies projects meeting specific criteria for the Florida Forever program. Each district integrates its surface water improvement and management plans, Save Our Rivers (SOR) land acquisition lists, stormwater management projects, proposed water resource development and water body restoration projects and other activities that support the goals of Florida Forever. Thirty-five percent of the Florida Forever bond proceeds are distributed annually to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) for land acquisition and capital expenditures in order to implement the priority lists submitted by the water management districts. -

Nature-Based Coastal Defenses Published by in Southeast Florida INTRODUCTION Miami Beach skyline ©Ines Hegedus-Garcia, 2013 ssessments of the world’s metropolitan areas with the most to lose from hurricanes and sea level rise place Asoutheast Florida at the very top of their lists. Much infrastructure and many homes, businesses and natural areas from Key West to the Palm Beaches are already at or near sea level and vulnerable to flooding and erosion from waves and storm surges. The region had 5.6 million residents in 2010–a population greater than that of 30 states–and for many of these people, coastal flooding and erosion are not only anticipated risks of tomorrow’s hurricanes, but a regular consequence of today’s highest tides. Hurricane Sandy approaching the northeast coast of the United States. ©NASA Billions of dollars in property value may be swept away in one storm or slowly eroded by creeping sea level rise. This double threat, coupled with a clearly accelerating rate of sea level rise and predictions of stronger hurricanes and continued population growth in the years ahead, has led to increasing demand for action and willingness on the parts of the public and private sectors to be a part of solutions. Practical people and the government institutions that serve them want to know what those solutions are and what they will cost. Traditional “grey infrastructure” such as seawalls and breakwaters is already common in the region but it is not the only option. Grey infrastructure will always have a place here and in some instances it is the only sensible choice, but it has significant drawbacks. -
