Right: Mike Young and Co Driver Malcolm Reed on the Nicole Summerfield Rally’s podium in China. Calming Force.

A lot has happened in the 4 months since my last update. One of the things I have concentrating on in my mental skills training. It's something I have become very passionate about and working with John Quinn has been an incredibly rewarding Malcolm Reed’s Pace Notes experience. John has a background In the last few months of Rallying I have had various success on different levels. In the Asia Pacific in sport psychology and works with Championship with Mike Young we had a rough few events beginning with Malaysia in August, Japan in many elite athletes including the New September and most recent China at the end of October. The Malaysian event was probably the biggest Zealand Sevens team. learning curve for us as we have been to this event before and know how difficult it can be and its not a particular enjoyable event. The issue with this was we lacked excitement about the event and failed to One of the techniques I have started channel any positivity which unfortunately resulted in a DNF after a crash. On the other hand Japan using is centering. In high stress was next and probably the perfect event for us to get back into a groove as we enjoy both the roads, environments, it is vital we find clarity event and the country in general. The event was held in heavy rain and challenging conditions which this and our "calm" head space where we time resulted in an electrical issue costing us time. Luckily we were able to push on and achieved a can think clearly and give our full podium place (2nd overall). Finally China rally which once again proved to be a huge learning curve. focus. I like to find one thing I can concentrate on - anything from a breathing to feeling what the car feels The car developed a power steer issue which the team was unable to fix. Mike had to really push like when its idling. himself and from a co drivers point of view I had to become a motivator more then a navigator.

At our last event, the Daybreak Rally of Wairarapa we were leading the The steering issue got the better of Mike and we unfortunately rolled and were stuck upside down. I rally in the opening stages. We hadn't remembered seeing spectators about 1km back up the road and ran to get help. When I returned with ever experienced what this feeling the spectators I made sure to reassure Mike we were going to make it to the finish and luckily I have was before so it was very easy to get been in a situation like this before. The team were very pleased with our efforts and in summary the distracted by people and our own team work between Mike and myself over these events have built an even stronger relationship which is thoughts. I focused on feeling the key for a successful partnership in rallying. Also with the roll in China and the extensive effort I went to movement of the car whilst its idling in getting the car fixed has meant I have had an offer from a Japanese driver who was also at the event. on the start line to bring my mind He asked for me to partner him in there national championship next year as well as possible other back to the job at hand. international events. I am discussing with him the finer details of this currently. The techniques I have learnt from John really proved their worth when In New Zealand I have also had various success ranging from mechanical issue which you just have to we came down to the last stage and deal with to leading events outright. I have also been working with a new driver(Sloan Cox) which being only 0.7 seconds ahead of our instantly the two of us clicked and we were leading a rallying but a incorrect pace note supplied by the competition! organisers meant we slid off the road and got stuck. This new paring has opened a new path for a potential partnership next year which I am working on the finer details. I have also been approached Being calm, centered and mentally by a few other drivers also looking at there options for next year and weighing up all options as well as ready allowed me not to succumb to how they fit into Next years plan with Mike as we look to win the APRC next year outright. the pressure and do my job well enough to help Matt bring home our first New Zealand Rally Overall I'm now up to my 90th event and continue to apply every experience I have had from all these Championship win. events to continuation of my career as I look to and plan to be full time professional this time next year. We are now in our off season which In terms of training I have been working on my endurance and stamina more then strength. doesn't mean the work stops. Matt and I are working extremely hard to make sure we bring the best of us to I did some heart rate checks in Malaysia and Japan both at the start of stages and finish and was the 2016 New Zealand Rally surprised that my resting heart rate 1 minute before a start was only 75-85 bpm on average and at Championship. stage end 100-115bpm.

Many thanks and have a great Christmas. Over the next two months ill be putting an extensive plan together as I confirm drivers and championships ill be competing in. I will also be starting my work with my providers in the new year to Nicole help with this preparation for the coming season as I will be able to show them the exact timeline of events and build appropriate programs to suit this.

On a side note away from my rallying I have my speedway season beginning in my Stockcar so I will be applying the mental skills and breathing techniques to this as I'm still new to the sport and even though its just a hobby these skills I've learnt will help immensely with calming me for driving and preparation for what is a brutal sport.

Hope this answers some of your great questions.

Regards Malcolm Read
