The Parkland Community

The Parkland School District is located in the semi-metropolitan region known as the . The Lehigh Valley region of eastern is made up of Lehigh and Northampton counties and is home to the three Mr. Richard T. Parkland has a robust Makerspace Program, a K-12 digital citizenship curriculum, and more than 50 teachers who have completed www.code.org training and incorporate coding assignments into their lessons. Parkland earned a Common Sense badge for providing safe and innovative spaces for students to thrive as they harness the potential of technology for learning and life. Approximately 400 students attending Parkland High School further enrich their education by participating in dual enrollment programs. Nine students earned full college scholarships and 29 students earned 25% academic scholarships or more in the Class of 2020 totaling $4.4M in gifts.

Activities and Athletics Parkland High School believes that co-curricular and athletic activities are an integral part of our culture. An after-school bus run is available to enable students to get involved. More than 80 clubs are offered as well as 23 sports including baseball, basketball, cross country, field hockey, lacrosse, football, golf, soccer, softball, swimming/ diving, tennis, track, wrestling and volleyball. Four athletes received a full college scholarship, 14 received partial scholarships for a total of $795,380 in scholarships. Fifty-nine students went on to play at the college level from the Class of 2020.

Clubs include American Sign Language, Art, Computer, Math League, Leo Club, Debate Team, the first Red Cross Club in the Lehigh Valley, Robotics, Jazz Band, Strolling Strings, Multi-Cultural Leadership, Yearbook, TV News, and many more. This year, the District is proud to announce the launch of an Equity and Inclusion Committee that includes student volunteers who are encouraged to share their voice. The school presents a fall play, children’s show and spring musical each year that rival the talent and sets seen on Broadway. Additionally, every year, music students audition and are chosen to participate in the prestigious All State Band, Orchestra, and Chorus Festivals. The District was awarded the National Association of Music Merchant’s Best Communities for Music Education title for the seventh consecutive year and won a 2019 Award as an Outstanding Visual Arts Community by the Pennsylvania Art Education Association. Curriculum Parkland offers a demanding college preparatory program supplemented with strong offerings in fine arts, technology, and business. Students have access to162 electives and must earn 24.25 credits to graduate during their four-year high school experience. Through required courses and extensive offerings, students may customize their program of studies to meet individual needs and interests. The curriculum is taught at varied levels of difficulty including Advanced Placement, Honors, Gifted/High Potential, College Preparatory, and Career, Education, & Work Readiness (CEW). In addition, 30 Advanced Placement courses are offered. We also offer 27 Dual Enrollment courses through Lehigh Carbon Community College and Seton Hall University. Approximately 84% of the Class of 2020 chose to attend a two or four-year college while 11% joined the workforce directly out of high school and 2% joined the military.

Special Programs in Engineering, Biomedical Science, Healthcare, and Computer Science Parkland High School provides opportunities for students to take Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Engineering, Biomedical Science or Computer Science learning pathways. The PLTW National Curriculum provides students with real-world learning and hands-on experience. The four-year sequence of engineering courses includes a weighted curriculum that combines traditional math and science courses and introduces students to the scope, rigor and discipline of engineering prior to entering college. PLTW Biomedical students are empowered to explore and find solutions to some of today’s most pressing medical challenges through activities that connect learning to life. Students investigate human medicine, physiology, genetics, microbiology, and public health. The PLTW Computer Science Program and AP Computer Science classes at the High School develop computational thinking skills and provide students with the tools needed for coding and app development. Internet cyber security concepts are an integral component of the program. Parkland High School also has a Trojan Tech Team comprised of students who provide training and support for their peers and teachers.

The Emerging Health Professions Program provides highly motivated high school seniors with an opportunity to experience a variety of healthcare careers. The program is approved by the PA Department of Education and offered through Lehigh Career and Technical Institute (LCTI), Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC), Penn State University, and Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network. While taking college level courses for college credit at a discounted rate, senior students spend half of their day in class at Penn State Lehigh Valley or LCCC and half of their day at the hospitals and healthcare facilities located throughout the Lehigh Valley to become fully immersed in a healthcare setting.
