It is with great sadness that the Westmont Park District notifies you that we have lost two outstanding members of our Board of Commissioners. On Thursday, December 14th, Commissioner Sandra Smith passed away. Then on Sunday, December 17th, Board President Diane Main lost her three year battle with pancreatic cancer. James Long John Karesh Diane was a member of the Board of Commissioners for 38 years and was the 2014 President Vice President/ Chairman of the Illinois Association of Park Districts Board of Trustees. She was chosen Treasurer as Westmont’s Citizen of the Year in 2017. She leaves an amazing legacy that was commemorated with the renaming of Twin Lakes Park to Diane Main Park on July 4, 2017. She truly believed in the purpose and benefits of programs. Sandra Smith served Westmont as the Secretary of the Park District Board of Commissioners for 37 years. She was a champion for the parks and women’s issues. On December 13, 2017, the Board of Commissioners honored Sandra by renaming Twin Lakes Woods Smith Woods. Both of these extraordinary women were advocates for parks and recreation. Sue Zapinski We consider ourselves richer for having been the beneficiary of their many Jim Flynn contributions. While we fondly reflect on the service of Commissioners Main and Secretary Vice President/ Treasurer Smith, we remain excited about the future and our newest member of the Board, Sue Zapinski. Sue was sworn in on January 9th assuming her new role on the Board. A 31 year resident of Westmont Sue brings with her a diverse background, love of Join Us! recreation and desire to serve the Park District. She and her husband Rob raised four Park Board meetings are held children, all of whom participated in a variety of Park District programs and attended on the second Wednesday of Westmont schools. After receiving a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering from each month at 6:00PM in the Bradley University Sue then received a Master’s in the same discipline from the Linden Room, located at the University of Illinois. After her early career as an engineer, Sue turned her focus to Senior Center, 55 E. Richmond family and local pursuits. Her passion for sports has led to a position as a girls softball Street. These meetings are coach at Westmont High School for the past seven years. The last three as head coach. open to the public. Sue also serves as a substitute teacher in School District 181, working mainly with special education. We are blessed to have Sue join our park District family. As we reflect on the service of our past Commissioners and memorialize their many contributions, spirit and dedication to the Westmont Park District we would like to remind everyone you too can memorialize your families and loved ones in our parks p as well. Memorial trees and benches can be purchased as a gift for a friend, family member, or loved one. These benches and trees add to the natural beauty of your park system and enhance everyone’s enjoyment while using your parks. Trees and benches Diane can be placed in any of our parks, including Ty Warner Park, or our new Robert Bernas Park scheduled to be open mid summer. Memorial bricks are also available and will Main be placed in Ty Warner Park. Commissioners Main and Smith were committed to the preservation of and reinvestment in Westmont’s park system, and would have been honored if you did the same. I encourage you to take advantage of the parks and recreational opportunities so near p to Diane and Sandra’s hearts. This Summer will see the return of our popular Summer Camps, Junior Golf League, and Little League baseball. Our Ty Warner spray park is a great way to beat the Summer heat. Please peruse our guide and mark your calendars Sandra for our popular Summer events: Concerts in the Park, Red White and BBQ, Pet Smith Promenade, and our annual Fourth of July celebration. Hope to see you in the parks this Summer - James Long, President John Karesh, Treasurer Jim Flynn, Secretary
