He also surprised my wife Nina by showing up with flowers at the Lenox Hill Hospital just before she gave birth to my son Mitchell. I hadn't said peep, but he had his quiet ways of finding out. Max was quiet in another way. He never discussed his heroism during the Nazi occupation. Yet not only did he write letters to Alekhine asking the latter to intercede on behalf of the Dutch martyrs, Dr. Gerard Oskam and Salo Landau, he also put his life or at least his liberty on the line for several others. I learned of one instance from Max's friend, Hans Kmoch, the famous in-house annotator at AI Horowitz's Chess Review. Hans was living at the time on Central Park West somewhere in the Eighties. His wife Trudy, a Jew, had constant nightmares about her interrogations and beatings in Holland by the Nazis. Hans had little money, and Trudy spent much of the day in bed screaming. Enter Nina. My wife was working in the New York City welfare system and managed to get them part-time assistance. Hans then confided in me about how Dr. E greased palms and used his in­ fluence to save Trudy's life by keeping her out of a concentration camp. But mind you, I heard this from Hans, not from Dr. E, who was always Max the mum about his good deeds. Mr. President In 1970, Max Euwe was elected president of FIDE, a position he held until 1978.

    A LETTER TO BERT (A medley about chess libraries, dealers and collectors) Bob Meadley 2001 1 THERE IS NO COPYRIGHT-ANYONE IS WELCOME TO USE THE CONTENTS FOREWORD This letter to Bert Corneth was expanded to include the dealers and collectors I have met over the years and a chapter on how I acquired the Christmas Series and finally three pages on how chess gradually ensnared me throughout my life. I apologise for the disjointed approach taken and don’t wish to rewrite it. As I am unable to use OCR scanning because of the poor quality of the manual typewriter the fact that I have to retype this ensures I won’t rewrite it. Most of the facts are there and all those interested in chess libraries & c can add more and correct mistakes. I’m told a floppy disc holds 250 A4 size pages of text so I have hardly half filled this disc. One of my real future delights would be to receive a disc in return with additions and corrections to my material. As for the disc it seemed to me that sharing information as cheaply as possible was simply done by sending a disc in the mail. Those of you who wish a hard copy should be able to get the disc printed out at a secretarial service. The last 3 months have been quite enjoyable (including the 1996 period) and the hardest part was the chapter on the Christmas Series as it had to be dug out of files. What makes a collector? Well, in my case, in rural NSW, I needed a library to keep me sane.

    Fred Reinfeld 1 Fred Reinfeld Fred Reinfeld (January 27, 1910 – May 29, 1964) was an American chess master and a prolific writer on chess and many other subjects, whose books are still read today. Biography Fred Reinfeld was one of the most prolific authors in history, having written or co-written over 100 books. Most were about chess, including books on the opening (Winning Chess Openings), the middlegame (1001 Winning Chess Sacrifices and Combinations), and game collections (Great Brilliancy Prize Games of the Chess Masters), as well as biographies of Alexander Alekhine, José Raúl Capablanca, Paul Keres, Emanuel Lasker (co-written with Reuben Fine), Paul Morphy (Andrew Soltis completed and published this book years after Reinfeld's death), and Aron Nimzowitsch. Most of Reinfeld's chess books, such as The Complete Chess Player, were geared toward novice players. Many players received their first introduction to the game through his books. Reinfeld also wrote books for more advanced players, but they sold fewer copies. In 1996, Reinfeld became the 26th person inducted into the U.S. Chess Hall of Fame, and the first inducted primarily for his writing.Wikipedia:Citation needed Although Reinfeld is remembered today for his writing, he was also one of the strongest players in the United States.
