By the time you receive this the recording season should be under way and hopefully those cold and miserable winter days will be but a mere memory. Also underway will be the Invertebrate challenge programme of training days, a three year project funded by The Heritage Lottery Fund and The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, which will be running around 100 events in total concentrating on the identification of some of Shropshire’s most under-recorded and under-studied invertebrates. It will also enable Shropshire Entomology to continue for the next three years, as well as enable my involvement with the SEDN as manager of the invertebrate database. Many thanks once more to everyone who has contributed to this edition. It can only function as a ‘newsletter’ if people contribute articles of news and views, so please do consider submitting articles that relate to entomology in Shropshire or entomology in general. Received: 9 October 2020; Accepted: 28 October 2020; Published: 30 October 2020 Simple Summary: Several wood-associated insects are inadvertently introduced every year within wood-packaging materials used in international trade. These insects can cause impressive economic and ecological damage in the invaded environment. Thus, several countries use traps baited with pheromones and plant volatiles at ports of entry and surrounding natural areas to intercept incoming exotic species soon after their arrival and thereby reduce the likelihood of their establishment. In this study, we investigated the performance of eight trap colors in attracting jewel beetles and bark and ambrosia beetles to test if the trap colors currently used in survey programs worldwide are the most efficient for trapping these potential forest pests. In addition, we tested whether trap colors can be exploited to minimize inadvertent removal of their natural enemies. -

After establishing quarantine colonies of O. primorskyensis in the United States, we tested the parasitoid Agrilus planipennis against eggs of 30 taxa of insects, mostly native North American wood-boring beetles in the families Buprestidae and Cerambycidae plus one unidentified weevil, one predatory coccinellid, one pentatomid and one moth. Fieldob- servations showed that EAB egg parasitism rate ranged from 23 to 44% in the Russian Far East and O. primorskyensis was the only egg parasitoid recovered from the parasitized eggs collected there. -

Twenty-three species documented from the parkway are first records for the state. Of the nine capture methods used during the survey, Malaise traps were the most successful. Periods of adult activity, based on dates of capture, are given for each species. Relative abundance is noted for each species based on the number of captures. Sixteen species adventive to North America are documented from the parkway, including three species documented for the first time in the state. Range extensions are documented for two species. EPPO Code: DENCMI Notes on taxonomy and nomenclature The majority of species in the genus Dendroctonus occur in the Nearctic region, and include several highly damaging forest pests. Dendroctonus micans and the North American boreal forest species, D. punctatus, are morphologically and ecologically very similar, and were considered doubtfully distinct (Wood, 1963). They are now understood to be closely related, and confirmed to be different species (Furniss, 1996; Reeve et al., 2012). HOSTS Throughout its range, D. micans breeds primarily in spruce (Picea) spp., mainly P. abies, P. sitchensis, P. orientalis and P. obovata, but also on occasion in P. ajanensis, P. breweriana, P. engelmannii, P. glauca, P. jezoensis, P. mariana, P. omorika and P. pungens (Grégoire, 1988; EFSA, 2017). Other native and introduced conifers are also occasionally attacked, including Pinus sylvestris, on which outbreaks have been recorded quite widely, typically on sites suffering adverse conditions (Voolma, 1993; CABI, 2020). Sporadic attacks have been observed on other Pinus spp. and on some Abies spp., Larix decidua and Pseudotsuga menziesii. Picea abies is preferred to P. sitchensis when the two species coexist, but is also generally more resistant to being killed than other spruce species (Bejer, 1984; Fielding, 2012). Utilization of Non-Native Wood by Saproxylic Insects
Chapter 23 Utilization of Non-native Wood by Saproxylic Insects Michael D. Ulyshen, Stephen M. Pawson, Manuela Branco, Scott Horn, E. Richard Hoebeke, and Martin M. Gossner Abstract Whether intentionally or accidentally introduced, non-native woody plants now feature prominently in many ecosystems throughout the world. The dying and deadwood produced by these plants represent novel resources for saproxylic insects, but their suitability to these organisms remains poorly under- stood. We herein review existing knowledge about the utilization of non-native wood species by saproxylic insect communities and also provide several previously unpublished case studies from the USA, Germany, Portugal/Spain, and New Zealand. The first case study suggests that the relative number of beetle species utilizing non-native vs. native wood varies greatly among wood species, with some non-native species (e.g., Albizia julibrissin) supporting a high beetle diversity. A decomposition experiment found that termites did not readily attack three non-native wood species and did not contribute significantly to their decomposition in contrast to what has been shown for a native pine species. The second case study found two species of non-native wood to support a lower richness of beetles compared to two native wood species in Germany, with Pseudotsuga menziesii supporting particu- larly few species which formed just a small subset of the community collected from native Picea abies.
