PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 3 MAY 2018 Kevin “Boxer” Moran publishes Flood Risk Management Plans and announces €257 million for 50 New Flood Relief Schemes, as part of a Ten-Year €1 billion Programme of Investment in Flood Relief Measures Speaking in Athlone today, launching a ten-year programme of €1 billion in investment in flood relief measures the Minister of State for the Office of Public Works & Flood Relief, Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran T.D., in the presence on An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar T.D., announced a first tranche of €257 million in funding for 50 new flood relief schemes to proceed to detailed design and construction. The Minister said, “This Government has provided €1 billion for investment in flood risk management measures over the coming decade. The Flood Risk Management Plans published today allow the Government to build on significant investment on flood defence schemes, since 1995, which has delivered 42 major flood relief schemes around the country. These schemes successfully provide protection to 9,500 properties and the economic benefit to the State in damage and losses avoided are estimated at €1.9 billion. There are currently also 9 major schemes under construction and a further 24 at design/development which together will provide protection to a further 12,000 properties”. Through the Office of Public Works’ (OPW) Catchment Flood Risk Assessment and Management (CFRAM) Programme, detailed engineering analysis, assessment and extensive public consultation has been undertaken for those 300 identified communities, including 90 coastal areas, that in 2012 were, at that time, considered most likely to be impacted by future flooding. -

During 2009 it was found throughout most of the Shannon River Navigation (~250km) occurring in swarms at estimated densities of ~6 per litre in shallows and in lower densities at depths of ~20m where its distribution overlaps with the native Mysis salemaai. Broods were found from March to September. It occurs mainly in lakes but small numbers were found at one river site. In summer, shallow- water specimens were found only during the night but in winter could be captured in daytime. It is not known by what means the species arrived in Ireland, or when. This report and accompanying presentation was considered by the Council at the Monthly Meeting held on 7th November 2011 (Report 338/2011 is appended as Appendix 1 of this report). It was agreed that Emergency Motions 1, 2, 3 (Amended), 8 and Motion 64 from the North Central Area Committee be referred to the Environment and Engineering Strategic Policy Committee for further consideration at a meeting of the SPC scheduled for 15th December 2011. The cause of the flooding on 23rd and 24th November was extreme pluvial rainfall which exceeded the capacity of the Drainage system and in turn gave rise to fluvial flooding, which was particularly evident in the River Dodder and in the smaller Dublin Rivers especially in the Camac, Poddle, Wad, Bradog, Zoo Stream. -

Mammalogist November 2003 INTRODUCTION It is acknowledged by all environmentalists and ecologists that in order to ensure that native fauna may flourish, it is essential that there is a mechanism for continuity provided for interchange between naturally accessible parts of the species’ range. For many mammals, this means of continuity is provided in two main ways: vegetation corridors (hedgerow, trees, scrub) and waterways. Tolka Valley Park provides a link between suburban and rural areas of Fingal. The river itself creates a natural channel for the movement of aquatic or semi-aquatic mammals. The riverside vegetation and the remnant greenery that has survived on the flood plain of the river serves as the vegetation corridor, dwelling and resting place for mammals necessary to sustain and allow the movement of these survivors of increasing urbanisation. To appreciate what the resident fauna of this relatively new park is, it is necessary to examine the site in a number of ways. Different mammals are located by the use of different techniques. This current assessment looked at the bat fauna and the non-volant fauna by different means. Bats were sought during the summer period by means of a bat detector survey. Non-volant mammals were investigated by a walk-through of the Park to identify their tracks etc. rather than any visual determinations. -
