The WFS StartCup will be a meeting between entrepreneurs, investors, customers and the press. The ideal environment to be able to do business with companies that will define the future of the sector. It will take place as part of the congress, to be held in Madrid, October 16-17. 1 Strategic Partners WFS and the GSIC will select 7 startups that will be able to present their elevator pitch and tell their business idea to the WFS attendees and to a jury made up of experts from technological and sport industry. The jury will select one winner and two special mentions. The winner will be awarded with one year of free membership to the Global Sports Innovation Center. Registration deadline until September 10, 2017. • More information and registrations SPOAC - Sports Business Academy by WHU joins the GSIC and will bring their marketing program to Madrid SPOAC – Sports Business Academy by WHU, one of the leading academic institutions for future leaders in sports business has teamed up with the Global Sports Innovation Center based in Madrid, Spain. The educational institution for managers in the sports business founded by the private business school WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management and the sports business information processor and congress organiser SPONSORs has signed a partnership agreement with Global Sports Innovation Center. Considering the way digitalisation and technological solutions are becoming increasingly more significant to the sports business, this partnership makes an important contribution to professionalisation in the industry. As one integral part of the partnership, students from SPOAC’s ‘General Management Program in Sports Business’ (GMP) will be on site at the GSIC during their fourth module ‘Sports Marketing – How to address markets successfully’ in November and benefit from the unique proximity to a variety of digital start-ups and tech-solutions within the GSIC ecosystem. 2 Strategic Partners “Digitalisation and the accompanying growth of the industry in particular pose new challenges to the managers of tomorrow. Therefore, we are really looking forward to a close relationship with the GSIC to open up new networks and gateways to technology services, digital solutions and programs that meet the needs of our partners, students and the industry as such”, states Philipp Klotz, CEO of SPONSORs. The GSIC, member of the jury in the Innovation in Sport & Football Competition by HYPE Foundation alongside UEFA Champions League The Global Sports Innovation Center is part of the jury that will choose the winning startup of the Innovation in Sport & Football Competition organized by HYPE Foundation in Cardiff in parallel with the celebration of the Champions League final next June. Likewise, other representatives are part of the jury, such us delegates from the VFS Stuttgart, UEFA, Cardiff University, Polar, Amazon, SAP, FC Barcelona, Adidas and Loughborough University. The final will be held in June 2nd in Cardiff, in the near proximity of the UEFA Championships League Final venue. At this event, the 10 chosen most innovative startups will pitch their companies to leading figures from top Sports and Tech Brands, Investors, the Football Community and the jury of the competition. HYPE Foundation is a global platform including experts from the field of sports, entrepreneurship, investors and university sector. The GSIC and HYPE have recently signed a collaboration agreement that will facilitate the participation of GSIC partners in various competitions is scheduled for 2017. • Register to attend the Innovation in Sport & Football Competition 3 Strategic Partners UPCOMING EVENTS Good practices on physical activity and health at local level, 26 May The Regional Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport of the Community of Madrid has organized the 2nd edition of the 'Good Practices Day on physical activity and health in the local area', which will give visibility to projects developed by the regional government and municipalities. The day is interesting, among others, companies with the capacity to participate in the bidding of these projects. The day is celebrated on May 26th in IFEMA and the attendance is free prior to registration at [email protected]. Attendees will have free access to the Fair of Fitness and Sports Facilities, held on that date. Wildmoka event on Digital Content Creation at GSIC, June 13th French company Wildmoka will hold its first event in Spain next June 13th at GSIC with a session on ‘Digital Content Creation’. Discussions will be covering the key day to day challenges Digital Team are facing today to produce increasing volume of content in a constantly moving multi-platform landscape, with various engagement and storytelling models. The latest options in revenue strategies will be also discussed; how to maximize revenue in making sure to capture and optimize available monetization opportunities in social media, as well as in developing new potential ‘paid-for’ business models. Suggestions for Improvement 20.06.2017 © Cem C Karamürsel 2 Introduction Since the beginning of 1990s, European basketball has gone through a quite turbulent period experiencing major structural and economic challenges, mainly caused by (i) deficit of demand (especially compared to football), (ii) certain governance issues (e.g. FIBA vs ULEB/Euroleague), and (iii) lack of a rational and sustainable economic model. Failure in creating and establishing such a model led to the situation that some traditional teams with a very successful history (such as Limoges, Benetton Basket, Kinder Bologna and more recently Montepaschi Siena and so on) have disappeared from the top-level European competition. Without any doubt, since its inception, Euroleauge Basketball has achieved quite a remarkable progress in enhancing the commercial value of the top-level European basketball league and significantly increasing the competition’s revenues. However, it still cannot be argued that the operating model of European basketball is now based on economically sound and rational principles & practices. In an effort to strengthen the financial stability of its clubs and to improve its financial governance model, Euroleague Basketball enacted its Financial Stability and Fair Play Regulations (FSFP). In this study, we perform a critical review of the financial criteria as set out in the FSFP rules (as stated in 2016-2017 Bylaws), both from an economic and legal perspective, also considering the “current reality” in European Basketball.
