Rodríguez ABSTRACT This dissertation critically examines reggaetón music as it is discursively constructed through mainstream media and Internet debates about the genre (e.g., online music forums, social networking profile pages) during and after the 2004 global musical crossover of reggaetón. Using various case studies to critically examine processes of both textual production and reception to reggaetón, I interrogate if and how the music industry constructs and simultaneously targets a Latin global and US Latino market for reggaetón through various marketing strategies and via mainstream media coverage in the US and abroad. Considering textual production and reception as equally significant processes that are constantly in contention with one another, I examine how active and participatory audiences online, particularly fans and anti-fans, negotiate reggaetón as a cultural text and in relation to the ways they are interpellated as the target market for it. The paper examines the particular views of the city that reggaetón makes public and the policy manifestations of these representations. I exhibit the reggaetoneros’ lyrical construct of an urban socio-spatial community actualized between the disco, the barrio, the caseríos, and the street. I show that the lyrical profile of reggaetón underscores poverty, violence, masculinity, and race as vital constructs of an authentically urban experience. The environmental elements and themes display an aesthetic that recognizes the city as dualistically liberating and constraining; an aesthetic identified here in the “blin-blin” sensibilities.

I was ecstatic on the way there and blasted the CD as loud as it could go in the car. I arrived about two hours early and the dense line, made up of equally exited fans, stretched around inside and outside the door. I never got to meet Daddy Yankee because he decided to leave (after several hours) before it was my turn. I, and the countless other fans who left Sam’s Club that day without an autograph or picture, were not bitter. We played our CDs loudly on the way back home and were not ashamed to love reggaetón[3].
