Course Description and Purpose: Yoga for Musicians is an integrated approach to various branches of Yoga including Pratapana and (warm-ups and physical postures), (breathing practices), and Dharana and Dhyana (meditation). The goal of the class is to deepen the qualities of attention and concentration, and to increase physical and mental stamina in music performance and practice settings.

Open to All Music Majors No prerequisites required Limited Enrollment

Suggested Yoga Supplies: 1. Yoga Mat – Bring an extra thick yoga mat or two mats. The floor in M01 is VERY hard. Cushioning will be very important, especially for those with sensitive knees. 2. Yoga Blocks - Generally, most people can find use for two yoga blocks in their practice, even the most flexible people. 3. Yoga Strap – you may also use a belt or a tie in place of a strap. 4. Blanket - A blanket makes a fabulous prop for many seated and reclining postures. It is also very nice for covering the body in relaxation. I would recommend Mexican blanket. They are firm enough to be an effective prop and large enough to cover the body in relaxation. However, any blanket can serve the purpose.

Other considerations: You may want to have a duffle or yoga bag to transport and store your props. Also, if you don't have a locker large enough to store your yoga props in addition to your instrument, you may want to see Mike Blass about checking out an additional locker or a larger locker. I know many of you will be heading to class following our practice and I'm confident you won't want to be hauling around your props all day.

Expected Learning Outcomes:

Students will be able to lead themselves through a home Yoga practice including Hatha Yoga Pratapana and Asanas (warm-ups and physical postures), Pranayama (breathing practices), and Dharana and Dhyana (meditation). Students will have a basic understanding of the philosophy of Yoga and how that philosophy can be applied to musical practice and performance.

Students should present appropriate verification from Student Disability Services during the instructor’s office hours. Please note instructors are not allowed to provide classroom accommodations to a student until appropriate verification from Student Disability Services has been provided. A student who is absent from classes for the observance of a religious holy day shall be allowed to take an examination or complete an assignment scheduled for that day within a reasonable time after the absence. “Religious holy day” means a holy day observed by a religion whose places of worship are exempt from property taxation under Texas Tax Code 11.20. A student who is excused may not be penalized for the absence; however, the instructor may respond appropriately if the student fails to complete the assignment satisfactorily.

The attempt of students to present as their own any work not honestly performed is regarded by the faculty and administration as a most serious offense and renders the offenders liable to serious consequences, possibly suspension.

ABSENCE DUE TO OFFICIALLY APPROVED TRIPS: The Texas Tech University Catalog states that the person responsible for a student missing class due to a trip should notify the instructors of the departure and return schedule in advance of the trip. The student may not be penalized and is responsible for the material missed.
