E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Pseudolaguvia virgulata, a new South Asian sisorid catfish species, is described from the Barak River drainage in Mizoram, India. The new species can be distinguished from congeners in having a brown body with two or three narrow, pale longitudinal stripes and a pale Y-shaped marking on the dorsal surface of the head. Additional distinguishing characters from its congeners are a serrated anterior edge of the dorsal spine, the thoracic adhesive apparatus reaching beyond the base of the last pectoral-fin ray, head width, pectoral-fin length, length of dorsal-fin base, dorsal-spine length, body depth at anus, length of adipose-fin base, caudal peduncle length, caudal peduncle depth, snout length, interorbital distance, and total number of vertebrae. Key words: Siluriformes, Sisoroidea, Barak River, South Asia Introduction Members of the sisorid genus Pseudolaguvia are small catfishes found in rivers draining the sub-Himalayan region and Myanmar. They superficially resemble miniature species of Glyptothorax in overall morphology and in having a thoracic adhesive apparatus with a median depression, but can be distinguished in having prominent postcoracoid processes. Phylogenetic Relationships of the South American Doradoidea (Ostariophysi: Siluriformes)

O. Birindelli A phylogenetic analysis based on 311 morphological characters is presented for most species of the Doradidae, all genera of the Auchenipteridae, and representatives of 16 other catfish families. The hypothesis that was derived from the six most parsimonious trees support the monophyly of the South American Doradoidea (Doradidae plus Auchenipteridae), as well as the monophyly of the clade Doradoidea plus the African Mochokidae. In addition, the clade with Sisoroidea plus Aspredinidae was considered sister to Doradoidea plus Mochokidae. Within the Auchenipteridae, the results support the monophyly of the Centromochlinae and Auchenipterinae. The latter is composed of Tocantinsia, and four monophyletic units, two small with Asterophysus and Liosomadoras, and Pseudotatia and Pseudauchenipterus, respectively, and two large ones with the remaining genera. Within the Doradidae, parsimony analysis recovered Wertheimeria as sister to Kalyptodoras, composing a clade sister to all remaining doradids, which include Franciscodoras and two monophyletic groups: Astrodoradinae (plus Acanthodoras and Agamyxis) and Doradinae (new arrangement). Wertheimerinae, new subfamily, is described for Kalyptodoras and Wertheimeria. Doradinae is corroborated as monophyletic and composed of four groups, one including Centrochir and Platydoras, the other with the large-size species of doradids (except Oxydoras), another with Orinocodoras, Rhinodoras, and Rhynchodoras, and another with Oxydoras plus all the fimbriate-barbel doradids. Based on the results, the species of Opsodoras are included in Hemidoras; and Tenellus, new genus, is described to include Nemadoras trimaculatus, N. -

SUMMARY: Catfishes constitute a highly diversified, cosmopolitan group that represents about one third of all freshwater fishes and is one of the most diverse Vertebrate taxa. The detailed study of the Siluriformes can, thus, provide useful data, and illustrative examples, for broader discussions on general phylogeny and macroevolution. In this short note I briefly expose how the study of this remarkably diverse group of fishes reveals an example of highly homoplasic, complex 'mosaic' morphological evolution. AQUARIUM FISH AND THEIR MAINTENANCE (Prepared by- Prof. S.P. Trivedi, University of Lucknow) A. AQUARIUM FISHES A certain number of fish are maintained in aquaria in homes, hotels, work places and other public purpose spots on account of their beautiful colours, agile swimming activities and attraction. These fish are more popularly known as ‘ornamental fishes’. Ornamental fish is often used as a generic term to describe aquatic animals kept in the aquarium for hobby, including fishes, invertebrates such as corals, crustaceans (e.g., crabs, hermit crabs, shrimps), mollusks (e.g., snails, clams, scallops), and also live rock. Live rock is a general term for any type of rock encrusted with, and containing within its orifices, a wide variety of marine organisms including algae and colorful sessile invertebrates. Ornamental fishes form an important commercial component of aquaculture, providing for aesthetic requirements and upkeep of the environment. Aquarium keeping of fish began in 1805 with the first public display Aquarium opened at Regent's park in England in 1853. Development of aquaria picked up further and by 1928, there were 45 display aquaria open to public, with over 500 aquaria presently functioning worldwide. Market for ornamental fish in the world- 1. For Public aquaria-less than 1%. 2. 99% of the Market for Ornamental Fish is still confined to hobbyist. Today, modern material, equipment and air transport have made it possible for hobbyists as well as display aquaria personnels to obtain a wide variety of fishes from all over the world and to maintain them with a high degree of success. -

Fish Fauna of North East India with Special Reference to Endemic and Threatened Species

The area is enriched with diversified fish fauna. A perusal of literature reveals that the area is blessed with 291 species under I 19 genera, 38 families and 12 orders (Hora, 1921 a, 1921b, 1936; Jayaram 1963, 1999; Malhotra and Suri, 1969; Sen, 1977, 1995, 1999a, 1999b; Bannan, 1984, 1992, 1994; Sen, 1985; S~gh & Singh, 1985; Vishwanath & Singh, 1986; Datta, Bannan & Jayaram, 1987; Talwar & Jhingran, 1991; Bhagowati & Biswas 1992; Vishwanath, 1993; Sen & Biswas, 1994; Nath & Dey, 1-997;· Keishing & Vishwanath, 1998, 1999; Kumar & Singh, 1998; Vishwanath et al. 1998; Vi &hwanath & Kosygin, 1999, 2000a, 2000b, 2001; Arunkumar, 2000a, 2000b; Arunkumar & Singh, 2000; Menon et al. 2000). The recorded and reported species along with their distribution in different States of N. E. India, status, type locality and endemicity have been shown in Table 1. Controversy is there regarding total number of species occurring in North East India. Regarding endemic species also differences of opinion persist. Sen (1985) identified 48 species to be endemic to Assam and neighbouring North Eastern States. Sarkar and Ponniah (2000) reported 66 species endemic to this region. Ghosh and Lipton (1982) reported 33 species as restricted in their distribution to this region. The present paper is worked out to get a total picture of the fish species recorded and reported so far from this region, as well as the endemic and threatened species occurring in N. -

Small ornamental species are mostly preferable in aquarium industry. BK Mahapatra Gourami is one of the most valuable and popular in small ornamental fish world. In India presently 8 ICAR-Central Institute of indigenous Gourami species are very common and highly demanding. Ctenops nobilis is one of the Fisheries Education, Salt Lake highly demanding and important among the 8 indigenous Gourami species. It is the only known species City, Kolkata, India in its genus. The fish is mainly cold water species. The species is widely distributed but it is a naturally scarce species. As per IUCN Red list, 2010 status the species is assessed as Near Threatened for its J Maity Vidyasagar University, population declines in the wild. Very little data available of the fish resulting problems occur during Midnapore, West Bengal, India maintenance of the fish in aquarium. So the proper study on the fish, captive breeding and rearing procedure of the fish is very important to meet the increasing demand of the fish among aquarium hobbyist.
