E-mail: [email protected] Hygronomini and Athetini from China (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae) with notes on the synonymy. - The tribe Athetini is represented by a large number of species in all zoogeographical regions. The taxonomy of this group is rather difficult and relies heavily on the characters of the male copulatory organ and of female spermatheca. In the present paper ninety-five species are recognised. One subgenus of Atheta, Ekkliatheta, and 65 species are described as new. Three new names are proposed: Alevonota franziana for Tomoglossa franzi Pace, 1991 [nec Alevonota franzi (Palm, 1973)], Emmelostiba xinjiangensis for Alevonota chinensis Pace, 1993 (nec Emmelostiba chinensis Pace, 1998), Atheta floresensis for Atheta aptera Israelson, 1985 (nec Atheta aptera Pace, 1984). New synonymies are proposed for nine species and genera: Alevonota pacei Assing, 2002, is placed in synonymy with Atlantostiba franzi Pace, 1994, Cordalia permutata Assing, 2002, with Cordalia chinensis Pace, 1993, the genus Euphorbagria Assing, 1997, with Melagria Casey, 1906, Leptusa acuta Assing, 2002, with Leptusa anmashanensis Pace, 1996, the genus Chariusa Pace, 2003, with Leucocraspedum Kraatz, 1859, Liogluta granulipyga Pace, 1998, with Liogluta langmusiensis Pace, 1998, and the genus Syntemusa Pace, 2002, with Irmaria Cameron, 1925. The typical series of Atheta namphoensis Pa+nik, 2001, from North Korea includes two genera and two species, the holotypus ? must be attributed to the genus Nepalota with the name of Nepalota namphoensis (Pa+nik). New combinations are proposed for 10 species: 6 for the genus Alevonota, 1 for Emmelostiba, 2 for Irmaria and 1 for Nepalota. Each new species is described and illustrated. All available distributional data are presented. Keywords: Coleoptera - Staphylinidae - Aleocharinae - taxonomy - China - synonymies - Palaearctic Region. ORTUÑO Departamento de Biología Animal, Facultad de Biología, Universidad de Alcalá, E-28871 Alcalá de Henares, Madrid, Spain. E-mail: [email protected] An enigmatic cave-dwelling ground beetle: Trechus barratxinai Español, 1971 (Coleoptera, Carabidae, Trechinae, Trechini). - An important population of Trechus barratxinai Español, 1971 was discovered in the Penyes de Roset, near the type locality (abyss of Barratxina, Xixona-Alicante, East Spain). This species, originally considered as cavernicolous, shows epigeal and lapidicolous life habits, as now discovered. A detailed laboratory study revealed the presence of wings which had been overlooked in the concise description of the species. The development of wings confirms the suspicion that, as in other species in this genus, T. barratxinai has geophilic, lucifugous and hygrophilous habits but is not a cavernicolous (troglobiont) species. The species description is completed with details on the anatomy of the female genitalia. Also, the taxonomic position of T. barratxinai is questioned and its position within the “T. austriacus-group”, near T. diecki Putzeys 1870, its geographical neighbour, is proposed. Finally, the first data on the species biology and on its habitat characteristics are given. Keywords: Carabidae - Trechus - redescription - systematics - ecology - caves - Iberian Peninsula. Nevertheless, nature can still be found within these areas. Urban ecosystems can offer ecological niches, sometimes only found in cities. This biodiversity in the form of genetic diversity, species diversity and habitat diversity provided the structure of this thesis. First, we studied the effects of urbanisation on genetic diversity. We analysed the population structure of the wall lizard with highly variable genetic markers.

Study on Eighteen Species of Japanese Acrididae (Orthoptera)l) By Eizi Momma Zoological Institute, Faculty of Science, Hokkaido Imperial University, Sapporo (W1~th 36 Figures) During these forty years the cytological investigations of the Acridian grasshoppers have been extensively carried out by a number of investigators, and considerable contributions have been devoted to the advance of animal cytology. The orthopteran insects, especially those of the Acrididae, have proved very favourable as material for the study of chromosomes, on account of the fact that their chromosomes are large in size having clear morphological features and are relatively low in number. Over one hundred of species have been cytologically investigated since the pioneer work of McClung ('00) in this field, demonstrating many valuable and • important facts and their bearing on problems of general cytology. One of the important matters confronting the students of Acridian chromosomes is to determine the interrelationships of the chromosome complexes in the different species. The extensive studies by McClung and his colleagues have established a great uniformity and constancy of the chromosome numbers in the Acrididae. Efforts made by these investigators greatly served to homologize individual chromosomes in closely related genera and species. Recently Ramachandra Rao (,37) has made a comparative study of the chromosomes in eight genera of Pyrgomorphinae (Acrididae), in view of finding the chromosomal relationship exist ing among the members of this subfamily.

Travaux du Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle “Grigore Antipa” 62(2): 191–211. https://doi.org/10.3897/travaux.62.e48604 Abstract During 2013–2017, assemblages of bush-crickets and grasshoppers were surveyed in two neighbour- ing flysch mountains – Čergov Mts (48 sites) and Levočské vrchy Mts (62 sites) – in northern part of Western Carpathians. Species were sampled mostly at grasslands and forest edges along elevational gradient between 370 and 1220 m a.s.l. Within the entire area (ca 930 km2) we documented 54 species, representing 38% of Carpathian Orthoptera species richness. We found the same species number (45) in both mountain ranges with nine unique species in each of them. No difference in mean species rich- ness per site was found between the mountain ranges (mean ± SD = 12.5 ± 3.9). Elevation explained 2.9% of variation in site species richness. Elevation and mountain range identity explained 7.3% of assemblages composition. We found new latitudinal as well as longitudinal limits in the distribu- tion for several species.

  • In Situ Effects of Elevated CO2 on Plants and Insects
27 (Norby et al., 1999; Murray & Ceulemans, 1998). In our trees, leaf duration was somewhat prolonged in Carpinus and Fagus growing in elevated CO2, in contrast it was reduced in Quercus. A trend needed to be verified over more years. We did not find an effect of elevated CO2 on bud break, which is in line with other studies (Acer rubrum and A. saccharum, Norby et al., 2003; Fagus sylvatica, Forstreuter, 2002; Liquidambar styraciflua, Herrick & Thomas 2003; Populus trichocarpa, Sigurdsson, 2001). The release of vegetative buds from winter dormancy is controlled by a complex suite of environmental signals, of which temperature and photoperiod are most important (Kaszkurewicz & Fogg, 1967; Campbell & Sugano, 1979; Wielgolaski, 2001). A delay of autumnal senescence has been reported for Populus trees growing in elevated CO2 (Tricker et al. 2004), and a reduced leaf duration for Rumex obtusifolius (Pearson and Brooks 1995). These results contrasts with our findings in mature forest trees. However, we found a trend towards a prolonged leaf duration in trees growing in elevated CO2 in the drought year 2003. Several more years are needed to ascertain longer-term trends, but the outcome of the first four years of treatment provide little evidence for any changes in tree growth and phenology in elevated CO2. Thus, we assume no carbon limitation of growth in these trees under current CO2 concentrations. However, enhanced below ground C-turnover indicates a rapid flux of new carbon through this system (Steinmann et al., 2004), which led us to conclude that elevated CO2 enhance fluxes rather than pools of carbon (Körner et al., in preparation).

Coptotriche japoniella (Tischeriidae) is a leafminer that is specialized on the evergreen trees, Eurya japonica and E. emarginata (Theaceae). We investigated its larval habits, seasonal development and larval morphology on E. japonica in a red- pine forest on Takamado Hill, Nara, Japan. C. japoniella has a univoltine life cycle with six larval instars and a long larval period of 9 months from August to May of the following year. The larvae possess crochets on the ventral prolegs, as do other Coptotriche lar- vae associated with Rosaceae and Fagaceae. We discuss the relationship between voltinism of tischeriid species and leaf type (i.e. deciduous or evergreen) of their host plants, and also examine crochets on the ventral prolegs as a diagnostic character among the three tischeriid genera, Coptotriche, Tischeria and Astrotischeria. Additional key words: adult longevity, larval crochets, leaf selection for oviposition The family Tischeriidae is a small group of leafmining Malvaceae in Astrotischeria. Oddly enough, they made moths, consisting of 114 described species (Puplesis & no reference to crochets of ventral prolegs by which Diskusˇ 2003). As of the early 1990s, the family was Leraut (1993) characterized Coptotriche [=Emmetia in considered to be made up of only one genus (i.e., his sense] larvae.
