La Côte Anglican Church Morning Prayer from 'A Wee Worship Book' Iona Community 8 August 2021 10th Sunday after Trinity Introduction: The story of St. Columba and the founding of Iona Abbey (For those watching the recording, please click on: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p09mf2bw ) Opening Responses Leader: O God, you summon the day to dawn, you teach the morning to waken the earth. All: Great is your name. Great is your love. Leader: For you the valleys shall sing for joy, the trees of the field shall clap their hands. All: Great is your name. Great is your love. Leader: For you the monarchs of the earth shall bow, the poor and persecuted shall shout for joy. All: Great is your name. Great is your love. Leader: Your love and mercy shall last forever, fresh as the morning, sure as the sunrise. All: Great is your name. Great is your love. Song The Summons (For those watching the recording, please click on https://youtu.be/cv7lnTcuvcU ) Prayer Leader: Let us pray. Lord God, early in the morning, when the world was young, you made life in all its beauty and terror, you gave birth to all that we know. Hallowed be your name. All: Hallowed be your name. Leader: Early in the morning, when the world least expected it, a newborn child crying in a cradle announced that you had come among us, that you were one of us. Hallowed be your name. All: Hallowed be your name. Leader: Early in the morning, surrounded by respectable liars, religious leaders, anxious statesmen and silent friends, you accepted the penalty for doing good, for being God; you shouldered and suffered the cross. Hallowed be your name. All: Hallowed be your name. Leader: Early in the morning, a voice in a guarded graveyard and footsteps in the dew proved that you had risen, that you came back to those and for those who had forgotten, denied and destroyed you. Hallowed be your name. All: Hallowed be your name. Leader: Early in the morning, in the multicoloured company of your Church on earth and in heaven we celebrate your creation, your life, your death and resurrection, your interest in us: so to you we pray, All: Lord, bring new life where we are worn and tired, new love where we have turned hard-hearted, forgiveness where we feel hurt and where we have wounded, and the joy and freedom of your Holy Spirit where we are the prisoners of ourselves. (Silence) Leader: To all and to each where regret is real, God pronounces pardon and grants us the right to begin again. Thanks be to God! All: Amen. First Reading Ephesians 4:25 - 5:2 Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbour, for we are all members of one body. “In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold. Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need. Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. This is the word of the Lord All Thanks be to God. Reflection 1 Song Love is the touch - introduced by John Bell of the Iona Community (For those watching the recording, please click on https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p09mf4d9 ) Second Reading John 6:35,41-51 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?” “Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day. It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God. ’Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” This is the word of the Lord All Thanks be to God. Reflection 2 Song I am the bread of life (For those watching the recording, please click on https://youtu.be/GhdFESRoy5k ) Intercessions After each category, anyone may offer a name or situation that comes to mind. Leader: Lord, draw near, All Lord, draw near, draw near and stay. Let us say a prayer for those who need to be remembered this morning: Those who have made the news headlines this week Because of what they have done or said … Lord, draw near, All Lord, draw near, draw near and stay. Those who have been brought to our attention through a meeting or conversation ... Those who are in hospital, in care, or in a place which is strange to them … Lord, draw near, All Lord, draw near, draw near and stay. Those in whose family, marriage or close relationship, there is stress or a break-up … Those who are waiting for a birth, or a death, or news which will affect their lives … Lord, draw near, All Lord, draw near, draw near and stay. Those who need to forget the God they do not believe in and meet the God who believes in them … Those whose pain or potential we should not forget to share with God this morning … Lord, draw near, All Lord, draw near, draw near and stay. And a prayer for ourselves as we go out into a new week: Lord, give us wisdom before we speak, understanding while we listen, sensitivity towards those we meet, and the perspective of your kingdom in which to see the things of the earth. Bring us to the day's ending blessed through having shared the day's beginning. In Christ's name we ask this. All: Amen. Lord, we believe that you hear our prayer and will be faithful to your promise to answer us. All Amen. The Lord’s Prayer All Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name; your kingdom come; your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. Song We cannot measure how you heal (For those watching the recording, please click on https://youtu.be/exr0oxZwZKA ) Blessing Leader: May God bless us; may God keep us in the Spirit's care and lead our lives with love.
