The great national crisis of civil war was over, but the nation had not yet re-united. The thesis argues that in the aftermath of the Civil War, American nationalism could not be reconstituted on neither an ethnic nor a civic model. Rather, on the eighty-ninth anniversary of Independence, the course of American Nationalism fell out along lines decreed by historical memory. The narrative construction of the past in the present constituted the only common thread on which to build a sense of national identity. In short, the thesis represents an in-depth study of national identity on the first anniversary of independence after the end of the Civil War. ii Acknowledgements The present work of scholarship is an homage to many people. First, to my teachers I owe a debt of gratitude that I could never repay in several lifetimes. At every stage of my career I have been carried by individuals whose scholarship I envy, whose character I admire, and whose dedication to craft is an inspiration to try and do the impossible. As was the case with my time at Carroll College, both of my undergraduate mentors deserve mention. To Gillian Glaes, who introduced me to the work of Liah Greenfield and the question of nationalism in Europe, I must once again send thanks. Her transition from Carroll College to the University of Montana enabled me to once again take advantage of her extensive knowledge concerning the workings of nationalism in Europe. At every stage of my career I have benefited from her insights. To Robert Swartout, who in 2013 suggested that the project was an exploration of the dreams of an American nation on July 4, 1865, I also must relay my gratitude and remit my hopes that he will forgive the allusion to Theodore H. White in the subtitle. But, my greatest expressions of gratitude must necessarily go to my mentors and teachers who bore with me through three arduous years at the University of Montana. To Kyle Volk, who has patiently endured my absent-mindedness, served as a constant critical guide as I formulated my thoughts, and been a wonderful model of insight, I owe the greatest debt. Through three wonderful years: first as a guide through how to be a teaching assistant, second as a teacher, and last as an advisor he has guided my steps and shown me the way in which I should walk. As Plutarch said of music, for historians to create harmony they must first investigate discord, and Richard Drake has shown me the worth of these words in the modern age. Behind every nation lies a story, and these foundation myths act as the engine of communal creation. Within each national community people both define and are defined by the telling of tales designed to recount their origins and imagine their future possibilities.1 In the aftermath of their civil war, Americans on July 4, 1865 embarked on a nationalistic, narrative quest to redefine their nation. Before the newly reunited nation could behave according to the tenets of its national creed it first needed to define the beliefs that formed the basis of a national consciousness. 2 Across the nation in the letters and diaries of individuals, in public speeches and ceremonies, Americans seemed to ask themselves in the words of Union General James Sanks Brisbin: “What is my future duty toward a union that has cost so much, and how can I transmit untarnished to my children the glorious liberties which I have enjoyed?” 3 In order to understand their duties and transmit their contested ideas of liberty Americans first needed to gather up their stories and evaluate the meaning of their history. The process of national re-definition during the Civil War began long before the eighty- ninth anniversary of Independence. For some northern Americans, like Union General Oliver Otis Howard, Lincoln embodied meaning of the new nation at Gettysburg in 1863, and Howard quoted the martyred president’s words in full.4 For others, such as Pennsylvania Congressman Russell Thayer, the nation received its rebirth with the emancipation proclamation and he quoted 1. Members of the H-LAW community would have recognized such names as Bruce Ackerman of Yale Law School, Jack N. Rakove of Stanford, and Sean Wilentz of Princeton. The odd thing about this panel, and about the other efforts of historians and other scholars to take part in the public controversy about impeachment, was that they either seemed or were treated as being out of place.     Popular Culture – Serial Culture: Nineteenth-Century Serial Fictions in Transnational Perspective, 1830s-1860s University of Siegen, April 28-30, 2016 Conveners: Prof. Dr. Daniel Stein / Lisanna Wiele, M.A. North American Literary and Cultural Studies Recent publications such as Transnationalism and American Serial Fiction (Okker 2011) and Serialization in Popular Culture (Allen/van den Berg 2014) remind us that serial modes of storytelling, publication, and reception have been among the driving forces of modern culture since the first half of the nineteenth century. Indeed, as studies of Victorian serial fiction, the French feuilleton novel, and American magazine fiction indicate, much of what we take for granted as central features of contemporary serial fictions traces back to a particular period in the nineteenth century between the 1830s and the 1860s. This is the time when new printing techniques allowed for the mass publication of affordable reading materials, when literary authorship became a viable profession, when reading for pleasure became a popular pastime for increasingly literate and socially diverse audiences, and when previously predominantly national print markets became thoroughly international. These transformations enabled, and, in turn, were enabled by, the emergence of popular serial genres, of which the so-called city mystery novels are a paradigmatic example. In the wake of the success of Eugène Sue’s Les Mystères de Paris (1842-43), a great number of these city mysteries appeared across Europe (especially France, Great Britain, and Germany) and the United States, adapting the narrative formulas and basic storylines of Sue’s roman feuilleton to different cultural, social, economic, and political contexts.

    WAVING THE CONSTITUTION AT THOSE WHO IGNORE IT I waved my pocket copy of the Constitution at Nancy Pelosi on July 19,2008. Khizr Khan waved his at Donald Trump on July 28,2016. In real time Thursday night, I caught only the final few seconds of Khizer Khan’s powerful speech at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. Through the rest of Thursday and Friday, more and more of the details of the speech flitted through my Twitter stream and then my heart was warmed when I saw photos of Khan pulling out his pocket copy of the Constitution and waving it at Donald Trump. Almost exactly eight years ago, I had done the same thing, waving my pocket copy at Nancy Pelosi, who then was Speaker of the House and appearing at Netroots Nation in Austin. Khan was confronting Trump about his campaign in which he had noted that “Trump consistently smears the character of Muslims. He disrespects other minorities, women, judges, even his own party leadership. He vows to build walls and ban us from this country.” (Quotes come from this copy of Khan’s transcript.) Khan then continued, presumably in reference to banning Muslims from the US: “Donald Trump, you are asking Americans to trust you with our future. Let me ask you: Have you even read the U.S. Constitution? I will gladly lend you my copy.” In my case, as I noted here and then in a follow-up a couple of months later here, I was urging Pelosi to act on the clear evidence that the George W.

It looks at all the recent studies and concludes that people are "born" that way, though well-funded studies are needed and there's a lot more to learn. Basically a sympathetic, friendly article for gays. But, hey, this is a blog and blogs were born to nitpick, so here goes. (Thanks to threader Gypsy Queen for pointing us to this.) What makes the case of Patrick and Thomas so fascinating is that it calls into question both of the dominant theories in the long-running debate over what makes people gay: nature or nurture, genes or learned behavior. Actually, only the MSM would describe the debate that way. It's been pretty clear to researchers (and obvious to queers) that sexual orientation is typically due to some combination of genetics and "environment," with environment typically referring to in utero exposure to certain amounts of hormones, etc. People are genetically disposed to being gay and that orientation is "locked in" by the time we're three at most, and most of the factors that lead to it are in utero. (A gross generalization, of course.) But no one serious in the field has argued for many years that dad refusing to play catch with his eight year old son is a contributing factor.
