MEDIA POLICY Credentials Media credentials are required for complimentary admission to the Fair. The Marketing and Communication Director will issue all media credentials. Credentials will be issued to and honored for working members of the media only and not family members and/or guests.

Use of media credentials for non-media purposes and/or distribution of media credentials to non-working members of the media, family members and/or guests will result in immediate loss of media credential privileges throughout the 10-day run of the Fair, and credential privileges will be carefully evaluated for future Fairs.

Credentials are subject to review and approval by the Marketing and Communication Director.

The Marketing and Communication Director will distribute credentials to editors/station managers a minimum of two weeks in advance of the opening day of the Fair. Requests for additional credentials will be considered on an as-needed basis in advance of opening day, and are subject to review and approval by the Marketing and Communication Director.

Freelance Reporters/Photographers will not be issued media credentials unless they can provide proof from the news organization for whom they are working; this includes a letter from a news director, editor or similar authority. No business cards or by-lined articles are accepted.

Media Parking All media vehicles need to park in the FH-2 parking lot by providing the gate attendant your media credential. Access to the FH-2 parking lot is located west of the Turlock Rural Fire Station located at 690 W. Canal Drive, Turlock. You will find the media entrance/Fair office directly across the street from this parking lot. Each passenger must present a valid Fair-issued media credential.

Media Entrance/Admission Credentialed media representatives will need to show media credentials to the attendant at Gate 1, located at the corner of Canal Drive and Broadway Avenue, who will contact the Media Center to grant you access and offer a motorized escort through the Fairgrounds to specific events you are assigned to cover. Note: Media credentials are valid only by entry through the Media Center office and are not accepted at any general admission gate. Media representatives must also sign in at the Media Center and sign out.

Press Box – FoodMaxx Arena A reserved section for media representatives, with prime seating, is available in the FoodMaxx Arena. To access this section, you must obtain a Press Box ticket from the Media Center and present your credential and ticket to the attendant at the FoodMaxx Arena entrance.

3

Track Access – FoodMaxx Arena Access to the track for motorsport events and/or horse events is subject to the approval of the event promoter. In all cases, when permitted, media representatives must sign a “Release of Liability” prior to the event. In addition, in some cases, the event promoter may require that the Fair issue a special track access pass (i.e., wristband, “pit pass,” etc.). Media representatives interested in track access must contact the Media Center a minimum of 24 hours in advance of the event to determine if track access is permitted by the promoter, to sign the required “Release of Liability,” and to obtain any and all additional track passes.

Interviews Most entertainers will agree to telephone interviews in advance of their appearance but are reluctant to give interviews on the evening of their performance. All requests for interviews should be directed to the Fair’s publicity staff at least one month in advance of the show date. Interviews are subject to approval by the act’s management and are not controlled by the Stanislaus County Fair.

Meet & Greet/Promotions Radio stations shall contact the artist’s management directly to arrange for any and all meet-and- greet requests and/or any other listener promotion the station may desire. The Fair highly recommends that the station obtain written confirmation of such arrangements from the artist’s management. Further, the Fair recommends that station representatives bring the written confirmation to the concert in the event the act’s road manager has questions or needs confirmation of the prearranged promotion.

Photo Policy Photographers may be allowed front-of-stage access for the first two numbers of a concert only. Photographers showing up after the second number may be denied access. This policy is subject to change depending upon the wishes of the entertainer(s) and/or directive of the act’s road manager.

Exhibit Judging Results Upon request, the publicity staff will distribute judging results after formal auditing has been completed, an estimated four weeks after closing day. Please direct requests for results to the Marketing and Communication Director at 209-668-1333 x340. Please do not call the Exhibits Office directly, as you will be referred back to the communication staff.

STANISLAUS COUNTY FAIR HISTORY

The Stanislaus County Fair has been a strong presence in Turlock by not only creating strong partnerships, but also creating lifelong moments for members of the community. In 2011, the Fair celebrated its 100th anniversary with a record number of attendants at 245,000 guests. Turlock’s first ever Melon Carnival was held in 1911 and was sponsored by the Turlock Chamber of Commerce. The modern-day Stanislaus County Fair attributes its start from the Melon Carnival and was organized as an effort to promote and market the local melon industry, as well as the shipping business. Held on Main Street in Turlock’s downtown, the Melon Carnival showcased watermelons donated by farmers, which were served free in a big tent. Activities included band music, a melon rolling contest, an acrobatic contest, baseball games with Turlock vs. Oakdale, a parade, horse cart races between fire departments, and a merry-go- round. In 1925, the Melon Carnival was sponsored by the American Legion Rex Ish Post 88. The carnival moved a couple of times until it settled on a seven-acre plot of ground in 1927. The land was purchased for $500 per acre as a permanent location, along with an old circus tent to house commercial exhibits. In 1929, the Arch Gate for the Fairgrounds was constructed using smooth river boulders. In 1935, the first Kiddie Kapers Parade was held, where youth members from Turlock paraded in costumes and on bikes. Community clubs and businesses provided floats for the parade to advertise their business and support for the youth members. This parade became a popular event that some considered the highlight of the Fair for its 18-year run. That same year, the state of California issued a charter that established the 38th District Agricultural Association (DAA). Moreover, in 1944 the American Legion sold the Stanislaus District Fair site and buildings to the DAA, which has operated the Fair solely ever since. During World War II, no fairs were held, although carnivals and horse pulling events continued in the downtown area from 1942-1944, sponsored by a citizens committee for the purpose of aiding wartime relief. Japanese-Americans assembled at the fairgrounds before being relocated to inland areas of the United States. For the remaining 3 ½ years of the war, the Fairgrounds served as a rehabilitation center for the Ninth Service Command. Classes for the newly established Stanislaus State College began on the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds in September 1960.The college moved to its current location five years later and was later awarded university status. In 1989, a Fair attendance record was achieved when 261,089 persons attended – this record is still unmatched and later the Fair expanded to its current 10-day length in 1994. The Fair did run for 11 days in 1997. In 1999, the Stanislaus County Fair Board of Directors with support of the Turlock American Legion resolved that the Stanislaus County Fair Arch Gate be recognized as a California State Point of Historical Interest. A marker was unveiled during an opening night ceremony during the Fair and is on public view just inside the historic Arch Gate.

16

STANISLAUS COUNTY FAIR HISTORY CONTINUED…

In 2010, a dedication ceremony honoring the Japanese-Americans involved in the Turlock Assembly Center of 1941 was held and a memorial was erected near the Floriculture building. In 2011, The Stanislaus County Fair celebrated its 100th Anniversary and Fair guests turned out in near record numbers for the Stanislaus County Fair centennial celebration. Over 245,000 Fair guests visited the Stanislaus County Fair during its 10-day run, an increase of nearly 20 percent over 2010. In addition to increased attendance, food sales were up nearly 25 percent and carnival revenue almost 35 percent. Social media was a pinnacle marketing tool and the centennial exhibit showcased images from the last 100 years. The Fair also sold over 40 of the once-in-a-lifetime 100 Year Pass, good for 100 years of Fair admission. Special promotions, such as Free ‘til 3 p.m. Sundays drove the gate attendance, as well as the FREE shuttle program. In 2012, state funding for all Fairs was eliminated. The Stanislaus County Fair officials also made the decision to brand the Fair instead of using different themes every year. A recognizable brand that everyone can identify with and treasure for years was created with the tag line “Imagine the Fun.” From a summer weekend in 1911 to a 10-day run one hundred years later, the Stanislaus County Fair works year-round to achieve its mission of promoting agriculture, education, entertainment and technology.

IMAGINE THE FUN BRAND

The core message is "Imagine the Fun," which focuses on the different elements within the Fair for people to enjoy. The brand identity is IMAGINING the different ways to have FUN at the Fair, and is accessible to all ages. The images used are crisp, edgy, and modern, yet keep the consistency of the old logo. The new brand elements incorporate livestock animals as the Fair continues to enhance the livestock program and educate the public on agriculture.

Funky Frank is the mascot for the Fair’s Kids Zone and Kids Club. His whimsical modern art orange head displays quintessential pictures of some of the Fair’s most memorable attributes. He signifies a child’s ability to imagine that anything is possible.

“Imagine the Fun” was an idea that inspired the Fair to test the boundaries of the imagination. The Stanislaus County Fair is always striving for excellence in agriculture, technology, art, and education. The tag line allows not only the Fair, but guests of the Fair, to test the limits of their imagination for the best overall experience.

STORY IDEAS Dinosaur Exhibit: Kokoro’s flagship robotic exhibit focuses on several dramatic vignettes that portray the life of dinosaurs in a variety of settings. Based on paleontological discoveries, each scene comes to life in a way that inspires the imaginations of even the youngest visitors, and offers a refreshing departure from traditional, academic displays.

History of the Exhibits Department: The first annual Fair of the Stanislaus County Agricultural District Number 38 was held in 1891 in Modesto and included many of the same community-inspired exhibits executed today. Such exhibits include Horses, Quilts, Preserves, Wine, Floral, Art, Culinary, Jr. Divisions, and many more. What was quoted by the President in 1894, still rings true to this day. He stated, “We should use our best endeavors to make Stanislaus County one of the foremost counties in the State. And in consideration of this, we are expected once during each year to hold a County Fair for the best productions of the county in all branches of the industry.” This carries forward to our current fair; 36,000 entries and still a strong community and family event in which one can enter their exhibits and share their talents with the community. empowHER Lounge: The Stanislaus County Fair has once again partnered with Vintage Faire Mall and Yonan’s Jewelers to bring guests a contemporary and inspirational lounge for young women, ages 16-25, to enjoy. The empowHER Lounge, which is hosted by KHOP @ 95.1, will be a lounge geared towards inspiring young girls to be great leaders in our community. The goal of the lounge is to give girls the confidence to be themselves through workshops. The lounge will also be presenting the girls with the skills needed to empower others as much as empowering themselves. The lounge will provide daily presentations, presented by W.E.L.L. Leadership, a women’s education and leadership league, on how to conduct themselves in different aspects of their daily lives. Presentations will include topics such as becoming a better digital citizen, speaking up and finding their voice, as well as finding their cause and passion in life. The workshops are there to help harness their leadership skills, navigate their relationship with technology, and create meaningful and inspiring online content by being careful with what they are posting on social media.

Kids Club and Partnership with TUSD: Kids Club Educational Program at The Stanislaus County Fair is a first-place, award- winning program that started in 2012. The Kids Club Program offers children ages 4-12 the opportunity to travel the Fairgrounds and explore the exhibits each day of the program through a fun, interactive passport. Children must answer questions on the passport as they travel through the Fair in an effort to educate them in Math, Science, Agriculture, Floriculture, and much more. Stanislaus County Fair’s Kids Club Educational Program has partnered with the Turlock Unified School District (TUSD) child nutritional program, Real.Fresh., to promote healthy eating throughout the summer 21 and school year. The partnership will launch the 20/20 Fruit & Veggie Contest and will reward students who participate in the contest for their healthy choices. The intention of the partnership is to support healthy food choices by promoting access to fruits and vegetables. Check out this website: StanCoFair.com

Livestock Department and Technology: John Mendes, Livestock Superintendent, for years has focused on maintaining the livestock exhibits program traditions. Families have entered their animals for generations and as technology changes, so does the process of how they enter their animals in the show rings. Mendes can discuss how they handle the ever-changing world of technology with the livestock department.

United Samaritans Canned Food Drive On opening night, guests who bring (2) canned food item benefiting United Samaritans receive a $2 off one adult admission coupon good for this night only. This is a great way of supporting our community and the homeless.

Derby I and II Nights: The Turlock Lyons Club is making strides to get the younger generation involved with the Derby in an effort to pass down the Derby traditions. Turlock Lyons has partnered with local high schools to build Derby cars and have administrators participate in the metal mayhem. The participating high schools are expected to compete in the Derby II on Tuesday, July 17 in the 2nd Heat after Powder Puff. 22

Kids Club Educational Program at the Stanislaus County Fair is a first-place, award- winning program that started in 2012.

Through outreach and the help of a variety of organizations, Kids Club is able to offer children of ages 4-12 years the opportunity to travel the Fairgrounds and explore the exhibits each day of the program through a fun, interactive passport. Children must answer questions on the passport as they travel through the Fair in an effort to educate themselves in Math, Science, Agriculture, Floriculture, and much more.

To maximize the experience for the students and parents participating, the passport becomes a ticket for a chance to win a Summer Fun Pack from KAT Country 103 by turning it into the Information Booth at the Fair.

The program had over 2,511 children in 2017 sign up and pick up passports in their quest for answers around the Fair. Children and parents arriving at the Fair have the opportunity to see the exhibits in the Fairground buildings including: Lowe’s Playhouse, Fine Arts & Photography, Floriculture, Home Arts, Junior Exhibits, Agriculture, Milking Parlor, Kids Zone, and much more.

Stanislaus County Fair has partnered with the Turlock Unified School District (TUSD) child nutritional program, Real.Fresh., to promote healthy eating throughout the summer. The partnership launched the 20/20 Fruit & Veggie Contest, which rewards students who participate for the healthy choices they make. The intention of the partnership is to support healthy food choices by promoting access to fruits and vegetables. Check out our Kids Club website: www.stancofairkidsclub.com!

Parents must fill out our form through our website. Kids will receive a free tote bag when they sign up.

Imagine The Food! From deep fried corn dogs to deep fried doughnut ice cream sandwiches, the Stanislaus County Fair made its national debut on the Cooking Channel Fall 2014. The Stanislaus County Fair was featured on the Cooking Channel’s “Carnival Eats” series. Vendors such as Monster Dog, Sweet Cheeks, and Sharky’s had the opportunity to feature their famously delicious cuisines. The show debuted on the Cooking Channel on August 18, 2014 and took viewers on a food roller coaster ride with host Noah Cappe eating his way across the country. Food, glorious food, is just one of the many highlights of the Stanislaus County Fair. What started over 100 years ago has become one of the best county Fairs in our state – in large part because of our strong exhibits program. The exhibits program is the cornerstone of the Stanislaus County Fair and features more than 30,000 entries within its three separate categories: Senior Exhibits, Junior Exhibits and 4-H/FFA Exhibits.

LIVESTOCK AND ANIMALS

The roots of FFA originate from a time when boys were losing interest and leaving the farm. Walter S. Newman chose to attain a solution to the problem with Edmund C. MaGill, Harry W. Sanders and Henry C. Groseclose, staff members of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute Agricultural Education Department. According to ffa.org, “Their mission was to prepare future generations for the challenges of feeding a growing population.” Their core focus was to teach that agriculture is more than planting and harvesting – It’s a science, it's a business and it's an art. Today, the National FFA Organization remains committed to the individual student, providing a path to achievement in premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. The Stanislaus County Fair’s Junior Livestock program offers this opportunity. The program presents a unique chance for school-age youth, primarily members of 4-H and Future Farmers of America (FFA), to competitively exhibit and auction their prize livestock on the open market. Only those animals identified by the judges as top-quality and market-ready are sold at auction. In 2017, the 50thAnnual Replacement Heifer Sale grossed $385,600 ($3,000.00 per head). Also in 2017, the 53rdAnnual Junior Livestock Auction grossed $708,381.90 and the 53rdAnnual Beef Sale at $269,853.02. “FFA continues to help the next generation rise up to meet those challenges by helping its members to develop their own unique talents and explore their interests in a broad range of agricultural career pathways. So today, we are still the Future Farmers of America.”
