    Scream Machines! For many people, there is only one reason to go to an amusement park. The roller coaster. Some people call it the "scream machine," with good reason. Have students explain their roller coaster experiences. Encourage students to describe ▪ How fast they went ▪ How high they went ▪ How far they went ▪ How long the ride lasted Ask questions, such as the ones below, to stimulate discussion. Write a list of phrases that describe students’ experiences and responses on the board. ▪ What do you remember most about your first roller coaster ride? What do you like (dislike) about roller coaster rides? (Give students time to share their personal experiences. You may wish to list student responses in two columns on the board labeled Likes and Dislikes.) ▪ How fast do you think roller coasters go? Why would one roller coaster go faster than another? Little Bobby Missoula is going to turn ten tomorrow and his parents have promised to take him to Outlandish Adventures, an amusement park that Bobby has seen advertised on television. As Bobby drifts off to sleep, he begins to dream about the fun that he will have on his birthday. He dreams about the smell of cotton candy and the yells of carnies soliciting people in to play their games, but most of all, he dreams about the Lightning Bolt - the tallest, fastest, and scariest roller coaster that little Bobby has ever seen. In his dream, the Lightning Bolt whips Bobby around sharp angles, through upside down loops so close to water that Bobby’s hair and face get wet, down vertical descents at speeds over 100 miles per hour, and finally to an abrupt stop where Bobby rushes to the end of the line to do it all over again. As Bobby walks into the kitchen the next morning, he sees his parents watching a news report on the television. He hears the reporter say, “This just in! A new statistical report suggests that 1 in 25 million people are seriously injured while riding roller coasters. Legislative initiatives blame state regulation for what at least one representative considers a dangerously high risk of injury and call for the federal government to take control.” Bobby’s parents consider the report, but realize that many activities, like riding in a car or on a bicycle, present some risk of injury.

Thrill-seekers search for more death-defying thrills in their scream machines; they want more looping, higher and steeper hills, greater drops and rolls, and faster speeds. Today, the Kingda Ka roller coaster at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey, holds the world record for largest drop (418 feet), tallest point of the track to the ground below (456 feet), and fastest (128 mph) coaster. Roller coasters operate on a few simple laws of physics: potential and kinetic energy, gravitational pull, centrifugal force, and friction. The train of cars on the coaster is pulled slowly to the top of the rst hill by a cable, collecting potential energy into the system. At the top of the rst hill, the potential energy is converted to kinetic energy as the train drops down and speeds along the tracks. Different types of wheels are used to make the ride smooth, and compressed airbrakes stop the car when the ride ends. The best coasters begin with a huge drop so the train can build up enough energy for the entire ride. Scream machines began in Russia in the 1800s. During the cold Russian winters, manmade ice-covered hills were constructed of cut lumber and tree trunks. Riders walked up 70 feet (5 stories) of stairs, climbed into ice-block sleds, and sat on straw seats.
