Low Sexual Desire in Men 202 Glossary 217 Bibliography 225 Index 237 FOREWORD When I was hosting my radio call-in advice show every night for years, all topics were welcome. But as soon as one man called up about a problem with his sexual functioning, the phone lines were flooded with similar calls from worried males, with the result that I could spend the entire rest of the night talking about men’s sexuality. The most common calls were from guys who were fearful that they were too small—when in fact their penis size was within normal range—and from guys worried about not lasting long enough, or hav- ing a hard time getting hard. The age of men talking openly about their sexual problems has exploded. The good news is that—finally—men are not hiding in shame, thinking they don’t measure up to a macho male societal image. But the open talk led to a shock—that so many men were suffering. Fortunately, over the years, more help has become available for every man’s complaint. In this book, New Frontiers in Men’s Sexual Health: Understanding Erectile Dysfunction and the Revolutionary New Treatments, Dr. K. Anthony Hanash brings us up to date with all the complaints men have, and even better, with all the latest hope for solutions. A urologist, Hanash has professional cre- dentials and 35 years of experience. In this book he backs up everything he addresses with the most solid, scientific, and up-to-date scientific research. In these pages, we find out about all that can go wrong for men, their partners, and also how to fix it. Even I, who have been in the field of sexuality for as long, was rapt while reading these pages. Like a murder mystery, there were parts I couldn’t put x FOREWORD down, unraveling the medical and psychological mysteries of a man’s sexual functioning and what can be done to solve the predominant complaints of size, desire, or performance. What Dr. Hanash gives us in these pages is a thorough review of the literature and scientific knowledge about male sexual functioning, in clear-enough language so we can truly understand the answers to pressing questions like “Is there a bone in the penis?” Or “Does anything really work to make the penis longer?” All this is then put into context of the man in his relationship, as partners are affected by any problem the man suffers. Most compelling is the promise of the book’s title—New Frontiers in Sexual Health: Understanding Erectile Dysfunction and the Revolutionary New Treatments—that we would discover in these pages revolutionary new treat- ments for male sexual problems. And indeed we do. Any health professional, and any man or woman, will be compelled by the exploration of the new frontiers presented here. Hanash keeps the reader amazed as he explores “Is sexual desire in the genes?” and as he describes experimental treatments and new products under study to treat male sexual problems. Some are intended for other purposes, like calcitonin, nitroglycerine, and minoxidil (for hair growth). Others are names of compounds the average person hardly recog- nizes now—like a PT-141 inhaler, or “recombinant erythropoietin” (a protein which stimulates the production of red blood cells)—but that may appear on the nightly news tomorrow as the next new hope, In this book, Dr. Hanash has taken his extensive and intensive knowl- edge and made it understandable. In that, he has reached the goal he set for himself—to take a complex subject and make it simple enough for everyone to comprehend. Dr. Judy Kuriasky Series Editor PREFACE It is better to light a candle than to curse the dark. Chinese proverb The word impotence is derived from the Latin impotentia, or “lack of power.” It has hounded men since the beginning of time. Impotence has triggered wars, lost kingdoms, tarnished reputations, and collapsed dynasties. Because of its pejorative connotations, the term was recast more positively a few years ago as erectile dysfunction (ED), which better defines the condition and has since been accepted internationally. Approximately 152 million men worldwide—a figure projected to increase to over 320 million by the year 2025—needlessly suffer from the inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficiently rigid for successful penetration and subsequent orgasm and ejaculation. It has been estimated that ED, to dif- ferent degrees of severity, may affect more than 50% of the world’s men over the age of 40 and may be particularly bothersome to a third of them. Statistics show that approximately 12.5% of the male population in the United States, or about 20–30 million men—including up to about 52% of men 40 to 70 years old—currently suffer from sexual dysfunction. Statistics further reveal that almost all men will, at one time or another, experience tem- porary episodes of inability to perform sexually. Although the great majority of adults of all ages view sexual activity as a key issue for optimal quality of life, sexual dysfunction is underreported, misdiagnosed, and poorly treated in the xii PREFACE United States and all over the world—despite being a major cause of marital discord and, probably, divorce. The sexually dysfunctional man finds his life shattered by his problem. He loses confidence and self-esteem. He is anxious, stressed, depressed, and may feel inadequate. His sense of manhood, his virility, and his self-image are bruised. Tension develops between the man and his partner and may emerge in his professional performance as well. Disharmony appears in his relationships with family and friends. He may deny the problem or shift the blame to his partner. Often, ED leads to total avoidance of any sexual ac- tivity or relationship, resulting in complete abstinence for fear of failure and embarrassment. With the revolutionary discovery of the phosphodiesterase type 5 inhib- itors, such as Viagra (sildenafil), Cialis (tadalafil), and Levitra (vardenafil), and the use of these oral medications by millions of men with excellent results and only a few minor side effects, a new era has dawned for the successful and safe management of ED. This recent advance has markedly increased people’s awareness of sexual disorders, and it has helped a large number of men and women to discuss the issue socially and in the mass media without any shame or embarrassment. It has also encouraged millions of men in all parts of the world to seek the new drug therapies, resulting in a very high satisfaction rate and marked improvement in the psychological and emotional disturbances associated with ED. Ironically, treatment success has also caused some marital problems, due to the sudden resurrection of potency in men who, after ignoring sex for a long time, have recovered their sexual prowess.

Men Learning to be Primary School Teachers Susan May Smedley Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Institute of Education, University of London 1 I hereby declare that, except where explicit attribution is made, the work presented in this thesis is entirely my own. Word count (exclusive of appendices and references): 79,635 words Abstract Few men choose to become primary school teachers. Those who do move into a world often thought of as feminised and contend with a publicly voiced rhetoric which simultaneously idealises and demonises them. It has not been the norm for women to research men. I am setting out from a different place as a woman and former primary school teacher writing about men doing women's work in what can be seen as a man's world. The problem I am tackling is embedded in two questions. First, how do men student teachers negotiate the assum ptions made about them as men and teachers of young children? Second, what theoretical perspectives are necessary for me to write about individual men students' complex relations with being a teacher? I turn a spotlight on men student primary school teachers and, working with data from interviews with eleven men, shed light on them as gendered individuals challenged by the task of learning to be teachers. The text I construct enacts their and my moves to establish a voice amidst a complex criss-cross of discursive positions. Individual men have an evolving and often contradictory relation to teaching, which they seldom articulate. There should be space for them to reflect critically on their professional identities.

“It’s not what’s intended, but it’s what happens”: Young women’s participation in Sport for Development and Peace in Colombia and the complexity of gender relations Sarah Oxford College of Sport and Exercise Science Institute of Sport, Exercise and Active Living Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Victoria University 2018 YOUNG WOMEN'S PARTICIPATION IN SDP 2 Abstract For women in Colombia playing sports was taboo for years. However, through Sport for Development and Peace (SDP) organizations, new spaces for female participation have emerged in recent decades. My research questions how girls and young women’s participation in a Colombian SDP organization shapes and constrains gender relations. This research includes six months of ethnographic fieldwork. Sixty interviews and many observations of participant's engagement were conducted in two distinct, low socio- economic neighborhoods where the SDP organization operates. My findings show female SDP participants are challenging gender roles in Colombia. The challenges were done in subtle and sometimes more overt ways with varying degrees of success; often rife with tensions and contradictions. Drawing from a decolonial feminist perspective and using an intersectional/entangled approach, this thesis explores the processes and mechanisms – gendered socialization, accessing alternative femininity, a constrained social bubble – that delimit girls and young women’s participation and perhaps invalidate steps toward social transformation. I argue that although more girls and young women are participating in masculine labeled pursuits, there are critical limitations to social change and female participants demonstrate the coloniality of gender in action. This research offers an in-depth focus on some of the complex and contradictory workings of gender within a sporting context, in Colombia.

THE BIOCULTURAL IMPACT OF ETHNIC HEALTH AND BEAUTY PRODUCT CONSUMPTION AMONG SOUTH FLORIDA JAMAICAN WOMEN By BRITTANY MONIQUE OSBOURNE A DISSERTATION PRESENTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA 2015 © 2015 Brittany Monique Osbourne To my ancestors and parents ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The following dissertation evolved over the course of five years with the help of many people. I would first like to pay honor and respect to my spiritual compass, my creator, whose love and wisdom guided me along this doctoral path. To my ancestors, both ancient and recently transitioned, I pay homage. No amount of verbal libations can ever truly honor the sacrifices they endured, so the living would not have to know their struggles. In particular, I would like to honor those ancestors who survived the Maafa. Without them, I would not be. I would also like to honor my Jamaican ancestors, particularly my Windward Maroon ancestors of Portland Parish. The legacy of their warrior spirits kept me strong throughout this process, and motivated me to continue the good fight of completing this work. I thank my intellectual ancestress Zora Neale Hurston, who I am very proud to have been directly trained by those who were trained by those who trained her. Her ethnographic and literary works spoke to me, and were always a constant reminder that those of us who are a blend of the fine arts and the social sciences are uniquely positioned to be a transformative voice for the voiceless.

  • Sent-Down Body‖ Remembers: Contemporary Chinese Immigrant Women‘S Visual and Literary Narratives
The ―Sent-Down Body‖ Remembers: Contemporary Chinese Immigrant Women‘s Visual and Literary Narratives Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Dong Li Isbister, M.A. Graduate Program in Women‘s Studies. The Ohio State University 2009 Dissertation Committee: Linda Mizejewski, Advisor Sally Kitch, Co-advisor Rebecca Wanzo Judy Wu Copyright by Dong Li Isbister 2009 Abstract In this dissertation, I use contemporary Chinese immigrant women‘s visual and literary narratives to examine gender, race, ethnicity, migration, immigration, and sexual experiences in various power discourses from a transnational perspective. In particular, I focus on the relationship between body memories and history, culture, migration and immigration portrayed in these works. I develop and define ―the sent-down body,‖ a term that describes educated Chinese urban youths (also called sent-down youths in many studies) working in the countryside during the Chinese Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). The ―sent-down body‖ in this context and in my analysis is the politicized and sexualized migrant body. The term also describes previous sent-down youths‘ immigration experiences in the United States, because many of them became immigrants in the post-Cultural Revolution era and are usually described as ―overseas sent-down youths‖ (yangchadui). Therefore, the ―sent-down body‖ is also the immigrant body, and it is racialized. Moreover, the ―sent-down body‖ is gendered, but I study the female ―sent-down body‖ and its represented experiences in specific political, historical, cultural, and sexual contexts. By using ―the sent-down body‖ as an organizing concept in my dissertation, I introduce a new category of analysis in studies of Chinese immigrants‘ history and culture.

My specific intention is to overturn some commonly held beliefs about each respective ideology and in the process unveil how tightly woven together they are, for their divergences are transparent but their points of convergence and overlap are less so. In fact, while many studies, such as Pamela Benson’s The Invention of the Renaissance Woman, seek to underline the misogyny penetrating works commonly held as profeminist, my scholarship instead locates some very concrete marks of profeminism locatable in works commonly held as misogynist. My chapter on Giovanni Della Casa’s An uxor sit ducenda (Se s’abbia da prender iv moglie) is a prime example: his reputation as a steadfast misogynist precedes him, but his text on whether or not marriage is useful actually enlists logic that speaks to the profeminist cause, adopting misogamist arguments that simultaneously criticize social treatment of women and indirectly promote levels of emancipation for them.
