7 EXTREME MATH CAMP 2019 A record number of students from grade 7 to 10 expanded their brains at Extreme Math Camp held at Walter Murray from July 3rd to 5th. Eighty students played with mathematical concepts such as Euclidean geometry, the number “11”, binary strings, Knudson-Tao puzzles, number theory, and combinatorics. Each day ended with a team competition in which students solved novel and original math challenges.

Presenters from a variety of backgrounds gave freely of their time: Ian VanderBurgh (Director of CEMC at U of Waterloo): Dr. Jenna Rajchgot, (U of S); Dr. Christopher Duffy (U of S); Dr. Cam Franc (U of S); Dr. Steven Rayan (U of S); Dr. Gareth Grifiths (retired professor from U of S), James Olsen (teacher) and Jacob Taylor (former WM student studying Math at the U of S).

The organizers Mrs. J. Christ (Walter Murray Collegiate Institute) and Mr. C. Milner (Centennial Collegiate) are grateful for the support of the Saskatoon Public School Board, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the U of S, CEMC at the U of Waterloo and the Sask. Math Teachers’ Society. Look for registration materials in May for next year's Extreme Math Camp. Extra thanks goes to highly involved math students, (namely Ray, Jenna, Anjali & Navoda from WMCI; and Mark, Kevin, and Akshat from CCI) who helped make each day run smoothly.

Look for announcements and registration materials about next year’s Extreme Math Camp to be held at the end of 2019-2020 school year by May of next year. Any inquiries can be made to Janet Christ (at WMCI, (306) 683-7850] or Cam Milner [at CCI at (306) 683-7950].

Math Club and Math Circle 2019-2020 Math Club and Math Circle will get underway by early October. Opportunities to be challenged mathematically by engaging in a variety of activities, such as problem solving, practicing math contest questions, listening to lectures on a range of topics, discussions, and writing of math contests are available to you from October to the end of April. Ideas from students are welcomed and everyone who comes will benefit in a variety of ways. Be sure to stay tuned to the daily student notices to stay abreast of the opportunities. Come and join us on Tuesdays at noon and Thursday or Fridays after school in room 304. First Math Contest Dates:

(CML): First 30 minutes problem solving challenge on Tuesday, October 15 (COMC): Thursday, November 7 (CIMC/CSMC): Wednesday, November 20

Feel free to come down to room 304 (Mrs. Christ’s classroom) early in the school year to pick up a complete list of math contest dates that WMCI participates in throughout the school year to help you plan and make decisions about what you would like to participate in. A problem of the week will also be available in a file folder on the door of room 304. Come challenge yourself by working through a new problem each week. Solution will be posted on the door a week later.

11 JAPANESE EXCHANGE 2020

In the 2019-2020 school year is again offering a two-week exchange program during the Easter break. This year the exchange group with 20 students from Saskatoon Public Schools will be visiting our partner schools in Takaoka and Kitahiroshima. The students will also have a cultural tour around Tokyo and Kyoto area.

They will live with Japanese host families - not as tourists, but as members of the Japanese families - which gives our students the opportunity to enrich their understanding and appreciation of Japanese cul- ture and traditions. They can also practice and improve their fluency in the Japanese language. It is con- sidered an asset, but is not a requirement to be either taking or have taken Japanese to be accepted for the exchange. However, the participants who are accepted for the exchange will be offered a special Japanese course before they leave.

The estimated cost for the exchange is $3,900 if there are 20 students. This includes transportation, can- cellation and out-of-country medical and accident insurance, and chaperone expenses. Not included in this fee are personal expenses, such as, spending money, passports, etc.

Information packages will be ready to be picked up from the contact teachers at each school starting the first week of the new school year. Please check the posters around your school and student notices for the contact teacher information!

Application form deadline for the Japan Exchange 2020 is Monday, October 7, 2019
