JAE 1 ELEMENTARY FRENCH IMMERSION Saskatoon Public Schools offers a Kindergarten to Grade 8 elementary French Immersion program. French Immersion students learn French and English and follow provincial curricula. Students generally enter the program in Kindergarten or Grade 1. The language of instruction is primarily French in Kindergarten to Grade 2. Utilizing the provincial curricula for early learners, our French Immersion program maintains a strong focus on student identity and language development while fostering students’ achievement in multiple subjects. The English Language Arts program is not formally introduced until Grade 3. In Grades 3-8, students apply their literacy and language skills to support and further their learning. Once students have learned to read in French, they apply this skill as they continue to explore the language and build vocabulary, communicate orally with purpose, and write to explain their thoughts and learning. The ability to speak, read, and write is applied in all subject areas and enables students to continue to learn the French language in the context of curricular subjects. Saskatoon Public Schools has seven dual-track elementary schools offering parallel English and French programs. The program schools are: • École Alvin Buckwold School • École College Park School • École Dundonald School • École Forest Grove School • École Lakeview School • École River Heights School • École Silverspring School Beginning in Kindergarten, École Henry Kelsey and École Victoria offer a single-track program where only French Immersion is offered. 2 COLLEGIATE FRENCH IMMERSION French Immersion at the collegiate level builds on students’ established language skills while also building competency in curricular subjects. To maintain their French Immersion status in high school and to be recognized as bilingual on their diploma, students are required to complete a minimum of 12 credits in French in Grades 10, 11 and 12. The necessary courses include three French Language Arts courses. The other nine French credits can be in the remaining areas of study or electives that are taught in French. Saskatoon Public Schools provides French Immersion programming at four of our high schools: • Centennial Collegiate • Marion M. Graham Collegiate • Tommy Douglas Collegiate • Walter Murray Collegiate 3 FRENCH IMMERSION ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ZONES Free busing may be available for students leaving their home neighbourhood to attend the French Immersion program in their area. Jesus broke every rule in the social structures of the Jewish culture. He spent time with poor people, sick people, disabled people, dead people, unclean people, children, women, Pharisees, tax collectors, sinners, Samaritans, Gentiles—and the list goes on… When Jesus was asked which was the most important commandment he responded, ‘Love God with everything you are and then love your neighbour as yourself.’ In this statement Jesus makes the point that loving and caring for our neighbours should be a natural and logical outgrowth of our love for God. As well, Jesus redefined the term neighbour to mean anyone with whom we have dealings with or come in contact with. Leslie Mitton writes, ‘our neighbors are those within our home, those we meet at work, in our church, and in our recreation. And more than that, our employer is our neighbor too; so are our work people, all who serve us in shops, those who empty our garbage cans, those who keep our streets and our parks clean. So too are the people of Europe, of Asia, in the Middle East, and in North America, etc. If we love our neighbors as we love ourselves, we shall want for them the treatment we should want for ourselves, were we in their place.’ To begin to see this happen, we need the lens of Jesus to correct our sight, to correct how we see others.

Saskatoon Public Schools Jordan Friesen, a 2020 Tommy Douglas graduate, received the $5,000 award 310 - 21st Street East presented by the Saskatoon Board of Education. The annual award is given to a Saskatoon, Saskatchewan graduate who best exemplifies the vision and goals of Saskatoon Public Schools based on academic excellence, personal qualities, leadership, and participation.
