Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

    Charris Efthimiou Metallica’s Tone Colour Characteristics of their Riffs (1983–1986) and the Differences between Slayer and the New Wave of British Heavy Metal Annotation The aim of this article is to consider the design of the riffs of Angel of Death and other songs from the first three albums by Slayer (Show No Mercy 1983, Hell Awaits 1985 and Reign in Blood 1986) from a music analytical point of view (including tone-colour analysis of the riffs). If Slayer’s riff design (from 1983 to 1986) is considered from an overall perspective, the following results can be observed: • A rapid tempo and a constant change in the tone-colours of the guitar (palm mute, powerchords and monophonic melodies) characterise the sound of most riffs from the first three albums of this band. • Although the number of tone colours is limited, exact repetitions of tone colours are avoided. • Melodies in thirds, sixths and octaves are rare. At the same time (1983–1986) and in the same geographic area (U.S. West Coast), the band Metallica found their own compositional path within the thrash metal genre. Although the two bands dedicate their songs to very different topics, there are significant proximity points in the section of riff design. The same music-analytical methods (such as the analysis of tone- colours) are used with Metallica again. Thus, on the one hand, correlations can be determined and special features unique with Slayer’s music can be highlighted on the other. Furthermore, in order to determine other similarities and differences, the riffs of Metallica and Slayer will be compared with riffs by bands belonging to the NWoBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) and were active in the years 1983–1986 (including Iron Maiden and Motörhead).

For most fans of us, know that a re-release dating back to 2004 (and still in effect today) will allow you to accumulate on the same album the mythical Live Undead and Ghosts of the Chapel mentioned in this column. In the same vein as the Show is not mercy for the first two titles and a significant evolution for the following that discover, relative I agree, slower and at the same time more worked or complex, while continuing his dark dark studies. Ghosts Chapel tends to be more resolute in the mad rush of sound and quality aggression in order to establish undeniable fame in the genre. Indeed, every SLAYER enthusiast should know how we feel listening to the damningly excellent cult song that is Chimicale - which is becoming now, the emblem of the slayerian paw without any references to different bands. SLAYER has just found its personal niche always copied and never matched today! What is then his brother's blood that is the impetuous Sin Thief, if not the fascinating melodic line that sends us valdinguer to the wall if we don't care about him so much his effectiveness is enormous.

    The “Spiritual Temperature” of Contemporary Popular Music: An Alternative to the Legal Regulation of Death-Metal and Gangsta-Rap Lyrics Tracy Reilly* ABSTR ACT The purpose of this Article is to contribute to the volume of legal scholarship that focuses on popular music lyrics and their effects on children. This interdisciplinary cross-section of law and culture has been analyzed by legal scholars, philosophers, and psychologists throughout history. This Article specifically focuses on the recent public uproar over the increasingly violent and lewd content of death- metal and gangsta-rap music and its alleged negative influence on children. Many legal scholars have written about how legal and political efforts throughout history to regulate contemporary genres of popular music in the name of the protection of children’s morals and well-being have ultimately been foiled by the proper judicial application of solid First Amendment free-speech principles. Because the First Amendment prevents musicians from being held liable for their lyrics, and prevents the content of lyrics from being regulated, some scholars have suggested that the perceived problems with popular music lyrics could be dealt with by increasing public awareness and group action. * Assistant Professor of Law, University of Dayton School of Law, Program in Law & Technology, Dayton, Ohio.     Late 1960's - Early 1970's The birth of heavy metal. Groups like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple were the first heavy metal bands. Late 1970's The rise of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest become very popular. 1978 Van Halen released their debut album. This began the Los Angeles/Sunset Strip scene, and many bands would come out of this era, including Motley Crue and Quiet Riot. The so called "hair bands" like Poison, Warrant and Ratt came from that scene as well. The Who's Keith Moon died.     PONTIFICIA UNIVERSIDAD CATÓLICA DEL PERÚ ESCUELA DE POSGRADO Entre la profesionalización y el underground Inicios de la escena metalera en Lima (1983-1989) Tesis para optar el grado académico de Magíster en Historia Ricardo Olavarría Ginocchio Asesor: Dr. Jesús Antonio Cosamalón Aguilar Lima, 2019 1 Resumen La presente tesis tiene como objetivo analizar las razones que llevaron a un grupo de jóvenes limeños varones, en la década de los ochenta, a tocar metal, tanto en la variante de heavy metal tradicional como en la extrema, a la vez que busca explicar de qué manera las circunstancias de la realidad nacional, tanto económicas como sociales y políticas, influyeron en la constitución de dicho género musical como escena. Para ello, parto de dos hipótesis. Por un lado, en un contexto de globalización y desestructuración, estos jóvenes encuentran, en la oscuridad, pesadez y potencia del metal, un espacio en el que construir lazos sociales entre pares y afianzar estructuras paralelas de autonomía y poder. Por otro lado, la formación de la escena metalera se da primero en una etapa (1983-1985) de convivencia entre las bandas de metal y las de otros subgéneros del rock; y luego, en una segunda etapa (1986-1989), esta adquiere carácter independiente y se perfila en dos vertientes: una que busca la profesionalización, que eventualmente pierde terreno ante la crisis económica, y otra underground, que lograr sortear la crisis a partir de sus propios códigos, los cuales marcan el futuro de la escena. Con el fin de poner a prueba dichas hipótesis, realicé entrevistas a participantes de la escena de la época, consulté diversos periódicos, revistas y fanzines, además de fuentes secundarias.

    PUBLIC COLLECTORS Records Collection Inventory of: Marc Fischer Chicago, IL, USA About PUBLIC COLLECTORS Public Collectors consists of informal agreements where collectors allow the contents of their collection to be published and permit those who are curious to directly experience the objects in person. Participants must be willing to type up an inventory of their collection, provide a means of contact and share their collection with the public. Collectors can be based in any geographic location. Public Collectors is founded upon the concern that there are many types of cultural artifacts that public libraries, museums and other institutions and archives either do not collect or do not make freely accessible. Public Collectors asks individuals that have had the luxury to amass, organize, and inventory these materials to help reverse this lack by making their collections public. The purpose of this project is for large collections of materials to become accessible so that knowledge, ideas and expertise can be freely shared and exchanged. Public Collectors is not intended, nor should it be used for buying and selling objects. There are many preexisting venues for that. Collectors can accommodate viewers at whatever location is most com - fortable or convenient for them. If their collection is portable or can be viewed in a location other than the collector’s home, this would still be an appropriate way to participate in the project. In addition to hosting collection inventories and other information, www.publiccollectors.org includes digital collections that are suitable for web presentation, do not have a physical material analog, or are difficult or impossible to experience otherwise.
