Defaming the Sacred!: Critical Looks at Popular & Classic Anime Defaming the Sacred!: Critical Looks At Popular & Classic Anime 1 BY DJ DAT E MASAMUNE i.e., The “Let’s see how many ppl. I can piss off in 90 minutes or less” Panel 2 I WONDER HOW MANY PPL. WILL BE LEFT WHEN THE PANEL’S OVER… Disclaimers 3 I have business cards with my contact info. Blog & resources will be available online So you can save your b*tching for that >.> Feel free to ask ques./make comments throughout However, not here to argue b/c you got butthurt Please let me know any feedback + suggestions for series to add When going over series, I only care about what happens in the anime General ‘Golden Rules’ 4 Just an opinion piece; this isn’t a judge of your character or your tastes If you truly “love” something, anything, you have to be able to accept the good, the bad, & the ugly Every show is flawed & these flaws don’t make a given show impossible to enjoy Just b/c something’s got (a lot of) flaws –or worse, is trash– doesn’t mean you can’t like it Just b/c a show’s on this list doesn’t mean I think it’s crap Flawed =/= terrible For All the Older Series… Astro Boy Tetsujin 28-go 8 Man Gigantor Speed Racer Lupin III Space Battleship Yamato Doraemon Galaxy Express 999 ∞ con’t All the shows have similar issues Hokey, cheesy, over-the-top, ridiculous set-ups/premises, super formulaic, etc. Buuuut…also tend to be groundbreaking, industry changing, standard setting, trailblazers, & a whole lotta things that make them harder to tackle i.e., copping out for the sake of keeping this panel shorter Not every 80s & earlier show is like this, but I PLEA THE FIFTH God only knows how much I want to tear into Macross -_- 6 So, presently on “D’Bag Reviews From a D’Bag”… 7 Fruits Basket 8 Old SJ Trinity of Bleach, Naruto, & OP 9 Another 10 Black Clover 11 All Recent Sports Anime 12 Especially Yuri On Ice!! 13 Attack on Titan 14 GO NOW OR FOREVER HOLD YOUR PEACE ( & B * TCH * NG) Levi, right here: Beyblades much? 15 Begin deluge, but first (2nd): F**k Mikasa (keep this in mind as I list off my complaints) What’s her purpose in the series? ‘Protect’ Eren with all the effectiveness of Orihime from Bleach & still find a way to magically piss me off more so than booby bomb from Breachiru X/ (don’t worry, I’ll s’plain it) 16 Detailed Account 17 The 3D maneuver gear makes no GD sense Why swords when clearly you have projectile weapons that would be better suited? Why didn’t they, in the before times, spend more time developing Titan-killing projectile weaponry than mofo swords/razor blades? What idiot thought this was a brilliant idea??? Even though I love my babies, WTF Levi & Erwin So you just gonna spin like a top…it’s that how we’re doing business now? I’m sorry, am I watching AoT or Beyblades? Also, why is Erwin such a bada$$ again? B/c he’s heartless..? Also, why does, in-universe, Sasha get hyped so much, going so far as to mention she was able to bring down a titan with a bow & arrow (how?), only for her to be cowardly for the rest of the series It’s called Claymore; AoT before it was AoT Con’t 18 Let’s talk about the 3 main characters, shall we? How the f**k is Armin still alive & in the top 10? Why doesn’t anyone take Eren seriously up until he turns into a Titan? Why is Mikasa being treated as this warrior maiden/valkyrie b*tch when you have ppl. like Levi & Erwin around? Also, she’s not super attractive (average, but not super hot) why do ppl. keep turning here into some kinda sex symbol??? Oh, & the only 2 times she really needed to be there for Eren (since joing the brigade), she failed miserably, she why is she being hyped as some type of ultra bodyguard for Eren There all one note, but it’s not really all that forgivable for how much this series is hyped; they’re not unbearable, sure, but they’re not all that terribly interesting either Finally, of course, being emotional is okay for guys (Eren & his Titan form) but bad for women (how many times does Mikasa almost get her Asian a$$ killed for being too emotional?) F**k that, most of the characters are uninteresting Compare/contrast to something like Gantz. You might hate all of them, but at least there’s something to feel anything about Con’t 19 The show keeps reminding you it’s “dark & edgy”…we mofo get it, get on with it If you’re used to tragic series, it’s relatively predictable Additionally… 20 Comparison 21 Shingeki no Claymore Kyoujin Monsters regulars couldn’t hope to kill Monsters regulars couldn’t hope to kill Monsters are difficult to kill (too pro) Monsters are difficult to kill (huge) Special force needs to deal w/ said monsters Special force needs to deal w/ said monsters Still not a guaranteed success Still not a guaranteed success Basically constantly being sent on suicide missions Basically constantly being sent on suicide missions (Recon Bleak outlook for humanity due to said Corps) monsters Bleak outlook for humanity due to said monsters Potentially corrupt leaders (The Organization) Potentially corrupt leaders (The Nobles) Clarified more in manga Clarified more in manga No real hope that the battle will ever end by the No real hope that the battle will ever end by the end of the end of the series, despite triumphs series, despite triumphs Impossibly cool fighting methods to deal w/ Impossibly cool fighting methods to deal w/ monsters…despite guns monsters…despite guns Guns are less effective than swords…’cause Guns are less effective than swords…’cause raisins raisins World overrun w/ monsters (?) World overrun w/ monsters (island)(?) & is clarified a little bit lot more in the manga & is clarified a little bit lot more in the manga Lord knows how the rest of the world is doing When you find out what the rest of the world is When you find out what the rest of the world is like..!? like..!? Etc. Etc. • The Origins of the Magical Girl Genre Note: This First Chapter Is an Almost
The origins of the magical girl genre Note: this first chapter is an almost verbatim copy of the excellent introduction from the BESM: Sailor Moon Role-Playing Game and Resource Book by Mark C. MacKinnon et al. I took the liberty of changing a few names according to official translations and contemporary transliterations. It focuses on the traditional magical girls “for girls”, and ignores very very early works like Go Nagai's Cutie Honey, which essentially created a market more oriented towards the male audience; we shall deal with such things in the next chapter. Once upon a time, an American live-action sitcom called Bewitched, came to the Land of the Rising Sun... The magical girl genre has a rather long and important history in Japan. The magical girls of manga and Japanese animation (or anime) are a rather unique group of characters. They defy easy classification, and yet contain elements from many of the best loved fairy tales and children's stories throughout the world. Many countries have imported these stories for their children to enjoy (most notably France, Italy and Spain) but the traditional format of this particular genre of manga and anime still remains mostly unknown to much of the English-speaking world. The very first magical girl seen on television was created about fifty years ago. Mahoutsukai Sally (or “Sally the Witch”) began airing on Japanese television in 1966, in black and white. The first season of the show proved to be so popular that it was renewed for a second year, moving into the era of color television in 1967.
