2 New Member Open and Book Signing at “Skyfire” February 23

It was a cloudy, cold, windy afternoon with intermittent sprinkles of rain as the Historical League volunteers set up tables, chairs and heaters for the evening’s event at “Skyfire”. As the guests arrived, dropping their cars at the valet and walking up the beautiful driveway, the wind suddenly died down, the clouds parted and it turned out to be a magical evening as 2019 Historymaker, internationally-renowned Frank Lloyd Wright-trained architect and author, Vernon D. Swaback , and his lovely wife, Cille , graciously welcomed more than 70 Historical League members, their husbands and friends to “Skyfire,” their incredible ! Cathy Shumard, Leslie Christiansen and Bonnie Newhoff coordinated the food to be served from the new Tastes and Treasures II: A Storytelling Cookbook of Historic Arizona along with 16 cooks and bakers. For dessert, Eddie Basha’s Chocolate Cake was served with a shot glass of milk, as Eddie liked to drink a cold glass of milk with his Chocolate Cake, and Zeppoles from Josephine’s and fresh fruit on a skewer. Also, hot chocolate with freshly made marshmallows by Leslie Christiansen and coffee kept everyone warm. We all enjoyed Vern’s very interesting presentation and the books we purchased were signed by him. We are especially grateful for the unexpected gift of Vern’s beautiful coffee table book, The Creative Community: Designing for Life, as we were leaving. A big thank you to ALL the helpers (too numerous to individually mention!) without whom this hugely successful event could not have taken place. Historical League member Lisa Schnebly Heidinger is a former journalist who authored her first book in 1995. Lisa became smitten with Arizona pioneers and history after hearing as a small child that the town of Sedona was named after her great-grandmother Sedona Schnebly. She began writing journals as a child, and moved from personal writing to newspaper reporting as a raw recruit at the Green Valley News in 1979. After four years, she broke into broadcast journalism, working seven days a week at KCEE radio while working weekends on KGUN-TV in Tucson. She opened the Northern Arizona bureau for KTVK-TV in 1989 and later moved to Phoenix. Today, she is an avid author, regular volunteer, and enjoys substitute teaching and traveling. In addition to "Calling Arizona Home," she is the author of the state's official Centennial commemorative book, Arizona: 110 Years Grand . Lisa will be our speaker on April 2 . She will speak to us about The Journal of Sedona Schnebly, which is her great-grandmother’s story. She also wrote the introduction and the venue stories of the Historical League’s new cookbook, Tastes & Treasures II . The Journal of Sedona Schnebly will be available for sale and a book signing.

Joan Fudala was the League’s speaker at the February monthly meeting. She presented “The Arizona Craftsmen: Catalyst for Scottsdale’s Post-World War II Cultural Cachet.” At the end of his wartime tenure as head of AiResearch near Sky Harbor Airport, which manufactured B-17 bomber parts, Tom Darlington was looking for a new venture. An entrepreneur and patron of the arts, Darlington bought the former Brown’s General Store on the southwest corner of Main Street and Brown Avenue. He asked sculptor Raymond Phillips “Sandy” Sanderson to help him redesign the space as a gallery for working artists and crafts people, where browsers could watch their future purchases being hand-crafted. By early 1946, a handful of artisans had accepted Darlington’s invitation to locate in the Arizona Craftsmen . They included: Lloyd Kiva New - leather and silk-screened fabric fashions, Wesley Segner – silver smith, Lew Davis – painter, Mathilde Schaefer Davis – sculptor, and George “Doc” Cavalliere - ornamental ironwork. After a fire destroyed the building, the artist started their own , e.g., Kiva Center on 5 th Ave. and some went to Cattletrack. For more infor- mation, Joan has written a very interesting article in the Scottsdale Airpark News , February 29, 2016, which can be found online.

March’s speaker, Tricia Loscher, serves as the chief curator at Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West. She told us about the current exhibitions at the museum, including Rennard Strickland’s collection of western film history. He has collected 5,500 movie posters dating from 1890s to 1999. Art of Joe Beeler: A Western Original, is another exhibi- tion. They have recreated Joe’s studio. Tricia also talked about Canvas of Clay: Seven Centuries of Hopi Ceramic Art. She showed us a picture of a Hopi Sityalki polychrome jar from c. 1400 (shown on the left). Also shown were pictures of Nampeyo’s pottery. Nampeyo is considered the matriarch of the Hopi potters. The museum is working on a Maynard Dixon exhibition and Tricia was admiring the Maynard Dixon in our museum’s .
