Pérez Jimenez (Universidad de Sevilla, Spain) MEMBRANE SYSTEMS: A BIO-INSPIRED COMPUTING MODELLING FRAMEWORK Membrane systems provide a high level computational modeling framework which integrates the structural and dynamical aspects of biological phenomena in a compressive and relevant way. The inherent randomness, external noise and uncertainty in those phenomena are captured by using stochastic and probabilistic strategies. Rather than being an alternative to more classical modeling frameworks, like ordinary differential equations, membrane systems constitute a complementary approach to be used when the classical modeling approaches fail to specify and simulate certain population’s biology correctly. In this talk, a membrane system based general framework for modeling the dynamics of population biology computationally is presented, and some applications to phenomena at micro (quorum sensing) and macro (real ecosystem) levels are described. -
Donatello's Terracotta Louvre Madonna
Donatello’s Terracotta Louvre Madonna: A Consideration of Structure and Meaning A thesis presented to the faculty of the College of Fine Arts of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts Sandra E. Russell May 2015 © 2015 Sandra E. Russell. All Rights Reserved. 2 This thesis titled Donatello’s Terracotta Louvre Madonna: A Consideration of Structure and Meaning by SANDRA E. RUSSELL has been approved for the School of Art + Design and the College of Fine Arts by Marilyn Bradshaw Professor of Art History Margaret Kennedy-Dygas Dean, College of Fine Arts 3 Abstract RUSSELL, SANDRA E., M.A., May 2015, Art History Donatello’s Terracotta Louvre Madonna: A Consideration of Structure and Meaning Director of Thesis: Marilyn Bradshaw A large relief at the Musée du Louvre, Paris (R.F. 353), is one of several examples of the Madonna and Child in terracotta now widely accepted as by Donatello (c. 1386-1466). A medium commonly used in antiquity, terracotta fell out of favor until the Quattrocento, when central Italian artists became reacquainted with it. Terracotta was cheap and versatile, and sculptors discovered that it was useful for a range of purposes, including modeling larger works, making life casts, and molding. Reliefs of the half- length image of the Madonna and Child became a particularly popular theme in terracotta, suitable for domestic use or installation in small chapels. Donatello’s Louvre Madonna presents this theme in a variation unusual in both its form and its approach. In order to better understand the structure and the meaning of this work, I undertook to make some clay works similar to or suggestive of it. -

A New Chronology of the Construction and Restoration of the Medici Guardaroba in the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence
A NEW CHRONOLOGY OF THE CONSTRUCTION AND RESTORATION OF THE MEDICI GUARDAROBA IN THE PALAZZO VECCHIO, FLORENCE by Mark Rosen One of the most unusual projects overseen by Giorgio Vasari in the Palazzo Vecchio in Flor- ence, the Guardaroba is a trapezoidal room containing a late-sixteenth-century cycle of fi fty-three geographical maps of the earth affi xed in two tiers to the front of a series of wooden cabinets (fi g. 1). Vasari published a detailed program for the Guardaroba project in the second edition of “Le vite de’ piu eccellenti pittori scultori e architettori” in 15681, at a moment when the project, begun in 1563, was still in development. The program defi nes it as a complete cosmography of the known universe, with maps, globes, painted constellations, illustrations of fl ora and fauna, and portraits of great historical leaders. Rarities and artworks placed inside the cabinets would act together with this custom-designed imagery to refl ect back on the name and charismatic persona of Vasari’s patron, Cosimo I de’ Medici (1519–1574). The idea and program behind the Medici Guardaroba had roots in late medieval studioli — small, womb-like study spaces that valorized private contemplation and collecting through complex humanistic decoration. Yet the goal of this new space was to be a public theater for the court’s cosmography and its power to collect and sort the duchy’s fi nest objects. The incomplete status of the room today — which includes only a series of empty cabinets, a terrestrial globe (1564–1568) by the Dominican scientist Egnazio Danti, and a cycle of maps painted by Danti (between 1563 and 1575) and Stefano Buonsignori (from 1576 through c. -

Diego Siloe, Autor Del Sepulcro De Don Antonio De Rojas
Renaissance Walking Tour 4
King François I, France’s “Renaissance Prince”, and his Italian-born daughter-in- law Catherine de Medici, dominated 16th-century France both politically and architecturally. François I had his hand in buildings of every kind from the Louvre palace, to the huge church of Saint-Eustache, to the Paris city hall, the Hôtel de Ville. You’ll visit these sites on this tour. Catherine de Medici shared her father-in-law’s passion for building, although almost none of her construction projects survived. But you can and will visit the Colonne de l’Horoscope, a strange remnant of what was once Catherine’s grand Renaissance palace just to the west of Les Halles market. From there, the walk takes you through the bustling Les Halles quarter, stopping to admire the elegant Renaissance-style Fontaine des Innocents and the beautifully restored Tour Saint-Jacques. The walk ends in the trendy Marais, where three Renaissance style mansions can still be admired today. Start: Louvre (Métro: Palais-Royal/Musée du Louvre) Finish: Hôtel Carnavalet/ Musée de l’Histoire de Paris (Métro: Saint-Paul) Distance: 3 miles Time: 3 - 3.5 hours Best Days: Tuesday - Sunday Copyright © Ann Branston 2011 HISTORY Religious wars dominated the age of Catherine de Medici and her three Politics and Economics sons. As the Protestant reformation spread in France, animosities and hostilities between Protestants and Catholics grew, spurred on by old family The sixteenth century was a tumultuous time in France. The country was nearly feuds and ongoing political struggles. In 1562, the Huguenots (as French bankrupted by wars in Italy and torn apart repeatedly by internal political intrigue Protestants were called) initiated the first of eight religious civil wars. -
