The Practices of Carnival: Community, Culture and Place
The Practices of Carnival: Community, Culture and Place. Submitted by Jonathan Freeman Croose to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Geography May 2014 This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. …………………………………………………………………….. 1 Abstract: This thesis analyses ethnographic data gathered during participant observation within two vernacular town carnivals in East Devon and Dorset during 2012 and within the professional Cartwheelin’ and Battle for the Winds street performances which were staged as part of the Maritime Mix programme of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad at Weymouth. The thesis presents qualitative perspectives with regard to the cultural performance of carnival in the fieldwork area, in order to analyse the ‘performativity’ of carnival in these contexts: how it enacts and embodies a range of instrumentalities with regard to notions of community, culture and place. The thesis serves to unpack the ‘performance efficacy’ of carnival within the wider political and cultural landscape of the UK in the early 21st century, revealing the increasing influence of institutional policy on its aesthetics and cultural performance. By way of contrast, the thesis also asserts the value of vernacular carnivalesque street performance as a contestation of hegemonic notions of ‘art’, ‘place’ and ‘culture’. -
Volume 10 No.2 September 2007 Edition No.38
The Speedway Researcher Promoting Research into the History of Speedway and Dirt Track Racing Volume 10 No.2 September 2007 Edition No.38 Cheetahs Crash It is always sad to see a track or team close down and the sudden demise of Oxford as an Elite League venture happened just as our previous edition went to copying. At the time of noting the end of the Cheetahs as an Elite League team our thoughts were the silver lining – comfort zone if you like – is that the stadium is not under threat of re-development and hopefully the City of Dreaming Spires would see speedway action soon. And so it came to pass that aspiring Exeter saviour Allen Trump has stepped into the gulf and saved the Conference League lads who now race under the name of Cheetahs. Allen has given the place a boost by hiring Peter Oakes to boot. Good luck lads – Lang May Yer Lum Reek (wi other folks’coal). JH Goodbye Michal and Kenny Whilst it is sad to lose a track, it is heartbreaking to lose riders. We send our deepest sympathies to the families of young Czech Republic rider Michal Matula and Swede Kenny Olsson who lost their lives on Sunday 27th May and Wednesday 6th June respectively. Michal never raced for a UK team but Kenny was a popular member of the Glasgow Tigers during his la st spell over here and the loss will be deeply felt by the Tigers’ fans and other admirers who followed his other teams in the UK. We will add their names to the Roll of Honour and hope, as ever, they will be the last names we will add to it. -

FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY LAW REVIEW VOLUME 16 SUMMER 1988 NUMBER 2 DETENTION WITHOUT TRIAL IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR: COMPARING THE BRITISH AND AMERICAN EXPERIENCES A.W. BRIAN SIMPSON* National security has long been advanced as a justification for the abrogation of civil liberties. In this lecture, Professor Simpson examines through the analysis of particular cases how two nations dealt with these competing values in the internment without trial of their respective citizens during World War I. Condemning the secrecy and lack of accountability of the authorities responsible for protecting the nation, Simpson issues a call for vigilance and a warning that patterns and habits of respect for liberty will serve better than mere forms of procedure to effectively insure that liberties are not again abandoned to ill-founded claims of defense necessity. -

Here, Cell Death and Differentiation asks Jac- ques Miller about his early work on thymus and T cells. CDD: Could you please describe your personal background, who were your parents, where were you born and what happened in your early years? My father and mother were both born in Paris in 1896. During the first World War (1914–1918), my father, Maurice Meunier, who spoke English fluently, acted as interpreter for the British troops who came to France. In 1919, he married and left with his new wife for China having found a job in a French bank in Peking (now known as Beijing). He spent some 22 years in China and Japan, eventually becoming Manager of the Franco-Chinese Bank in Shanghai. Besides English, he also spoke Spanish flu- ently, and learned Mandarin Chinese which he could write, and also Japanese which he wrote and spoke. In 1930, my mother returned to France by ship for health reasons. Finding that she was pregnant, she decided to have Fig. 1 Jacques (left), Gus Nossal (right) in 1967. -
