The Des Moines Symphony is a not-for-profit, professional orchestra formed in 1937 to enrich, educate and inspire the community by performing great orchestral music. The Symphony Association, governed by a volunteer Board of Trustees and operating on an annual budget of $4.2 million, supports the Symphony Academy and its numerous music education programs including five youth ensembles, and supports the Des Moines Symphony Orchestra which performs seven pairs of Masterworks concerts, a Pops series including the traditional New Year’s Eve Pops, education, outreach and family concerts, and other special events in its home at the Des Moines Civic Center.     A dedicated and energetic instructor, MEGAN HOFELDT is committed to instilling a life-long love of music and learning in each of her students. Based in Central Iowa, Megan is the Instructor of Flute at Grand View University and Central College. She also teaches lessons to junior high and high school students through the Central Music Academy in Pella, the Urbandale Middle School, and her home studio in Huxley. As an experienced flute choir conductor, Megan strives to program diverse selections of world music that feature the entire flute family ranging from piccolo to contrabass. In addition to teaching lessons at Central College, she also conducts the Central Flute Ensemble. This group is open to all students and can be heard in regular recitals on and off campus. Her Grand View University studio and home studio also program flute ensemble music for their semi-annual recitals. In addition to teaching, Megan also maintains an active performance schedule. She was recently appointed Principal Flute of the Ottumwa Symphony Orchestra after serving as Second Flute/Piccolo and Substitute Principal since 2005. She also performs as Principal Flute of the Central College Community Orchestra and enjoys frequent chamber music collaborations with her colleagues. Megan was formerly Principal Flute and Piccolo with the Southeast Iowa Band, the University of Iowa Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra, and was featured as Principal Flute for the University of Iowa Symphony Band's 2008 performance at Carnegie Hall. She has performed chamber music at the Wisconsin Flute Festival, Iowa Flute Festival, Central College, West Music Conservatory, Clarke University, and Culver-Stockton College.

    2021 Board of Directors Member Biographies Updated: March, 2021 Dr. Kevin Carroll currently serves as Vice President of Behavioral Health Services for UnityPoint Health – Des Moines. He is a fellow with the American College of Health Executives and a graduate of the Iowa Hospital’s Executive Academy. Previously, employment includes administrative and clinical positions at Broadlawns Medical Center and Orchard Place. Dr. Carroll received his Bachelor of Arts from Central College, Master’s Degrees from the Universities of Maryland and New Hampshire and Doctorate from Drake University. His community involvement has included serving on the West Des Moines Schools board, WDM Youth Justice Initiative, WDM Chamber of Commerce Board, Grandview University’s Social Work Advisory Council and coaching youth sports. Kevin is married and has two children. Beth Coonan is an employment and immigration attorney at Dentons Davis Brown, PC. She helps businesses understand the complex web of laws affecting employers and implement policies and procedures to reduce legal risk. Beth is an active volunteer in the community with a focus on mental health and improving conditions for women and girls across Iowa. She serves on several nonprofit boards and advisory committees in her efforts to affect positive change in the community. Kathy Fehrman is currently the managing partner of Fehrman Investments, L.L.C. and is a Commissioner for the Iowa Transportation Commission. Before moving to Iowa in 2008, she worked in the fields of accounting and audit in Columbus, North Platte, and Omaha, Neb.
