Tipperary, Commandant Vlll Battalion, 3rd Tipperary Brigade. 1 was a youth of 17 years of age when the Insurrection took place in Easter Week of 1916. I had just finished my school-going days and had commenced to assist my father in his hardware business in my native town of Carrick-on-Suir. There was then no unit of the Irish Volunteers in Carrick-on-Suir.. There were, however, in the town a. few nationally minded people, such as Dr. Murphy, Maurice Hickey and some members of the Dowley families, who had broken away from the Redmond ite Party and the Irish National Volunteers when the split took place in that body a few years before, but, as far as I am no effort was made to establish an aware, Irish Volun6eer company. On the other hand, Carrick-on-Suir held amongst the towns of Ireland the unenviable distinction of, in proportion to its population, giving the second highest percentage of recruits to the British Army.

Geography PowerU In Place-Names: A Case Study Of Present Day Waterford County, Ireland (85U pp.) Director of Thesis: Timothy Anderson This study investigates the present day toponymns of Waterford County, Ireland. By using the Land Ordnance Survey of Ireland maps, a database was created with the place names of the county. This study draws upon both traditional and contemporary theories and methods in Geography to understand more fully the meaning behind the place names on a map. In the “traditional” sense, it focuses on investigating changes in the landscape wrought by humans through both time and space (the naming of places). In a more “contemporary” sense, it seeks to understand the power relationships and social struggles reflected in the naming of places and the geography of those names. As such, this study fills a void in the current toponymns and cartographic literature, which are both focused mainly on patterns of diffusion and power struggles in North America.

THE LIST of CHURCH OF IRELAND PARISH REGISTERS A Colour-coded Resource Accounting For What Survives; Where It Is; & With Additional Information of Copies, Transcripts and Online Indexes SEPTEMBER 2021 The List of Parish Registers The List of Church of Ireland Parish Registers was originally compiled in-house for the Public Record Office of Ireland (PROI), now the National Archives of Ireland (NAI), by Miss Margaret Griffith (1911-2001) Deputy Keeper of the PROI during the 1950s. Griffith’s original list (which was titled the Table of Parochial Records and Copies) was based on inventories returned by the parochial officers about the year 1875/6, and thereafter corrected in the light of subsequent events - most particularly the tragic destruction of the PROI in 1922 when over 500 collections were destroyed. A table showing the position before 1922 had been published in July 1891 as an appendix to the 23rd Report of the Deputy Keeper of the Public Records Office of Ireland. In the light of the 1922 fire, the list changed dramatically – the large numbers of collections underlined indicated that they had been destroyed by fire in 1922. The List has been updated regularly since 1984, when PROI agreed that the RCB Library should be the place of deposit for Church of Ireland registers. Under the tenure of Dr Raymond Refaussé, the Church’s first professional archivist, the work of gathering in registers and other local records from local custody was carried out in earnest and today the RCB Library’s parish collections number 1,114. The Library is also responsible for the care of registers that remain in local custody, although until they are transferred it is difficult to ascertain exactly what dates are covered.

PREFACE. 1 HAVE condensed into this little volume a consi- derable part of the local etymologies contained in " The Origin and History of Irish Names of Places." 1 have generally selected those names that are best known through the country, and I have thought it better to arrange them in alpha- betical order. The book has been written in the hope that it may prove useful, and perhaps not uninteresting, to those who are anxious for information on the subject, but who have not the opportunity of perusing the larger volume. Soon after the appearance of "The Origin and History of Irish Names of Places," I received from correspondents in various parts of Ireland communications more or less valuable on the topo- graphy, legends, or antiquities of their respective localities. I take this opportunity of soliciting further information from those who are able to give it, and who are anxious to assist in the advancement of Irish literature. IRISH LOCAL NAMES EXPLATKED. THE PROCESS OF ANGLICISING. 1. Systematic Changes. Irish prommciation preserved. —In anglicising Irish names, the leading general rule is, that the present forms are derived from the ancient Irish, as they were spoken, not as they were written. Those who first committed them to writing, aimed at preserving the original pronunciation, by representing it as nearly as they were able in English letters.

AFFANE, a Parish in the Barony of Decies-Without-Drum, Containing a Small Village of the Same Name, Co
PARLIAMENTARY GAZETTEER OF IRELAND 1844-44 [WATERFORD EXTRACTS] ABBEYSIDE, a district and town, in the barony of Decies-without-Drum, and suburban to the borough of Dungarvan, co. Waterford, Munster. The district is described by the Commissioners on municipal corporations as one of three parishes which compose the union, or manor of Dungarvan, as forming with Dungarvan- West the parish of Dungarvan mentioned in the ancient charter of the borough, and as now a distinct parish in itself; and it is laid down in one of two maps of Dungarvan in the report on Borough Boundaries, as “Abbeyside parish, now part of East Dungarvan; but, in all the other parliamentary documents before us, both it and ‘East Dungarvan’ are treated as strictly a part of Dungarvan parish.Yet in the Roman Catholic ecclesiastical division, it forms a distinct parish in the dio. of Waterford and Lismore. See Dungarvan.- The town of Abbeyside extends along the north-east or left side of Dungarvan Harbour, directly opposite to the borough; and is included in both the municipal and the parliamentary boundaries. In 1832, it had 40 tenements of value to qualify for the franchise. A very handsome bridge, built solely at the expense of the duke of Devonshire, was erected in 1816 to connect it with Dungarvan; and previous to that time communication could be maintained only by means of a ferry. The ruins of an ancient castle, and of the abbey whence the suburb is named, combine with the harbour to form a pleasant view from the Dungarvan side. The castle belonged to the Magraths, and, along with some adjacent lands, was given by them to the monks.
