  • Romania: Jewish Family History Research Guide
Courtesy of the Ackman & Ziff Family Genealogy Institute July 2007 Romania: Jewish Family History Research Guide Historical Background Like most European countries, Romania’s borders have changed considerably over time. Starting in the late 15 th century, the Ottoman Empire ruled the Romanian provinces of Moldavia, Walachia, and Dobruja, while Austria and Hungary controlled Banat, Bihor, Maramures, Satu Mare, and Transylvania. Austria took over Bukovina (northwestern Moldavia) in 1774, and Russia obtained Bessarabia (eastern Moldavia) in 1812. An unsuccessful Balkan revolt against the Turks ultimately led to Russian occupation of Walachia and Moldavia from 182934. The two principalities merged in 1859 to form Romania (also spelled Rumania or Roumania at various times), which remained subservient to the Ottomans until full independence was achieved in 1878. The province of Dobruja was also added at that time. After World War I Romania regained control over the territories of Banat, Bessarabia, Bihor, Bukovina, Maramures, Satu Mare, and Transylvania at the expense of AustriaHungary and Russia. During the Holocaust period, Romania temporarily gave up northern Transylvania (including northern Bihor, Maramures, and Satu Mare) to Hungary, and permanently lost northern Bukovina and Bessarabia (now the Republic of Moldova) to the Soviet Union. Jews were present in the region under the Roman Empire, but subsequent invasions and wars severely disrupted their existence. The Jewish population increased significantly after 1800, primarily due to immigration. These resources at the Center for Jewish History contain further historical details: Encyclopedia of Eastern Europe Modern reference work gives a balanced history of disputed territories, such as Transylvania. Romanian topics are covered on pages 666698.

  • PAUL-RĂZVAN ŞERBAN, Ethnical
ETHNICAL STRUCTURE DYNAMICS OF MARAMUREŞ REGION (ROMANIA) PAUL-RĂZVAN ŞERBAN* Key-words: ethnical structure, dynamics, diversity, Maramureş, Romania. Abstract. The ethnical structure of Maramureş is the outcome of an ongoing process that has passed through some important stages connected with the rise and fall of the empires that used to dispute neighbouring territories. Worth recalling is the way in which these empires referred to the religion of conquered populations, or of their allied peoples. Christianity with the Proto-Romanians goes back to the time of Apostle Andrew, it gradually developing until the 8th century, a period in which it became the official religion of the Byzantine Empire (AD 313 – the Edict of Milan), spreading out in the territories inhabited by Romanians. The political pressures of the neighbouring empires of Maramureş ceased after the Second World War and the ethnical groups inside the province would evolved "normally". A significant increase registered the Rroma population, while the other ethnical minorities and the Romanian population are declining through population aging. 1. HISTORICAL CONSIDERATIONS The Christian population of Moldavia and Wallachia was under the protection of the Patriarchate of Constantinople (10th – 19th cc) except for the years 1235–1393, when it was under the guardianship of the Tyrnovo Metropolitan See. Throughout that time, the Transylvanian Christians (inclusive of those in Maramureş) had a distinctively different situation. In AD 732, the iconoclast Byzantine Emperor Leon the Sirian, dissolved the Prima Justiniana Bishopric. Basil the Second (the Bulgaroctone) would Christian the Russians (roundabout the year AD 890) when Vladimir, the Great Knez of Kiev, married Anne, the Emperor’s sister after having helped the Byzantines fight the Bulgarians (Brezeanu, 2005).

https://collections.ushmm.org Contact [email protected] for further information about this collection Hass, Irving RG-50.233*0053 Interview on March 24, 1992 Two Audiocassettes Document contains transcriber notes Abstract Irving Hass was born on May 18, 1925 in Ruscova, Romania, the oldest child of an observant family; he had five sisters and a younger brother who died of pneumonia at age nine or ten. His father, who had served in the Austro-Hungarian army during World War 1, was a supervisor for a lumber manufacturing company; he was away all week, coming home on Fridays. His mother raised the children and tended the family’s garden. Irving attended a Romanian public school and a cheder before the Hungarians came. Early in the war, his uncle in America sent food packages to the family. When the Hungarians took over, there was food rationing; there was no public school for the Jews; many men were taken for labor; they had to wear a yellow star. The Germans came in with the Hungarians. Soon his family, along with the other Jewish families in Ruscova were marched to a ghetto in Vişeu [Note First transcription has this as Wishov. Second transcription notes this as Vitsyuv. However, Vitsyuv is in the Ukraine and is further from Ruscova than the distance Irving Hass indicates. There are many sources that mention Vişeu de Sus as having a ghetto.] From there they were loaded into cattle cars and taken to Auschwitz. His five sisters and parents were taken to the crematorium, and he was sent to the barracks.

ABSTRACT The Eudontomyzon danfordi characteristic habitats state of Maramureş Mountains Nature Park varies greatly, 19.05% are in excellent conservation status, 47.62% are in good/average status and 33.33% are in a partially degraded condition. The identified human impact categories which induced the decreasing of Eudontomyzon danfordi species habitat state in the studied area are: poaching, minor riverbeds morphodynamic changings, liquid and solid natural flow disruption, destruction of riparian trees and bush vegetation, habitat fragmentation-fish populations isolation, and organic/mining pollution activities.
