Young Neal and the Vipers
young neal Offi cial Bio : Young Neal and the Vipers Walking down a lonely city street after dark, the empty calm envelops you. Then the moaning wail of a '58 Fender Stratocaster tears out of a dimly-lit nightclub and into your ears. Suddenly you're hooked by the and the Vipers siren call of that screaming six-string and hauled, fl opping, into the bar. It could be any one of 200+ nights a year the fi erce blues-rock machine called Young Neal & the Vipers plays out from coast to coast. Eight days a week, the group delivers what fans and critics alike agree is a "pounding shock wave of noise that howls with all the intensity of a hurricane throttling itself up to a full-blown gale." (Worcester Phoenix) Frontman and lead guitarist, Neal Vitullo honed his reputation playing with the greats. At the Benson & Hedges Delta Blues Museum Tribute, b bio Vitullo shared the Madison Square Garden stage with Joe Cocker, Bonnie Raitt, Albert Collins and Greg Allman and the man of the night, John Lee Hooker. Vitullo has performed with Jimmy Vaughan, ZZ Top, and Willie i Dixon. He has also wowed crowds overseas, gaining disciples in Belgium, o Germany, France, Italy and the West Indies. Neal Vitullo has evolved from a guitar slinger to a singer and songwriter, and the best front man any band could boast plugging in for. The lineup for the Vipers is the best knock 'em down, drag 'em out rockin' blues band this side of the Mississippi. Banging his heart out, keeping the back beat behind the drums is Mike LaBelle, and on bass, the big bad bald man himself, Hub O'Neil. -

Journal of Texas Music History, Vol. 10 [2010], Iss. 1, Art. 3 “I wanna go home with the Armadillo Good country music from Amarillo and Abilene The friendliest people and the prettiest women You’ve ever seen.” These lyrics from Gary P. Nunn’s “London Homesick Blues” adorn the wall above the exit from the Austin Bergstrom International Airport baggage claim. For years, they also played as the theme to the award-winning PBS series Austin City Limits. In short, they have served in more than one instance as an advertisement for the city’s sense of self, the face that Austin, Texas, presents to visitors and national audiences. The quoted words refer, if obliquely, to a moment in 9 the 1970s when the city first began fashioning itself as a key American site of musical production, one invested with a combination of talent and tradition and tolerance that would make of it the self-proclaimed “Live Music Capital of the World.”1 In many ways, the venue of the Armadillo World Headquarters served as ground zero for these developments, and it is often remembered as a primary site for the decade’s supposed melding of Anglo-Texan traditions and countercultural lifestyles.2 This strand of public memory reveres the Armadillo as a place in which -

The bassist for the show, John Previti, who backed up guitar legend Danny Gatton for twenty years, had invited acclaimed local guitar slinger, Dave Chappell, to sit in. Soon three Telecasters were blazing away, exploring shared history and new frontiers. The Spellcasters were born. The Spellcasters specialize in music made by and for that unique and marvelous American invention, the Fender Telecaster. Two "Telly" masters who have particularly inspired the band are D.C. legends Danny Gatton and Roy Buchanan. The repertoire includes Harrison's transcriptions of two of Danny's lesser known compositions, as well as covers from Danny's repertoire, “Harlem Nocturne” and “Rock Candy.” The band also does "Sweet Dreams," a song that Roy Buchanan often played. -

As a performer and musician, his resume is so complete that there is a tendency to sit back and marvel at it: virtuoso player, sonic innovator, hit songwriter, wild stage performer, outrageous dresser, sex symbol, and even sensitive guy. But there is also a tendency, possibly because of his overwhelming image, to fail to dig deeper into the music, as Rob Van der Bliek has pointed out.1 In this study, we will look at Hendrix’s music, his performance practice, and its relationship to the mythology that has grown up around him. -
