TV Land’s second pilot, “Brothers-in-Law” (working title), will star Mohr (“Last Comic Standing”), Cooke (“Better With You”), Woglom (“Outlaw”) Pierson (“24”) and Coleman (“The Newsroom”). The pilot focuses on the family dynamic between Neil (Cooke) and his wife Cheska (Coleman) as they adjust to Van (Mohr), the eccentric fiancé of Cheska’s twin sister Maddie (Woglom). Pierson stars as Tom, the family patriarch, whose instant bond with Van makes Neil jealous and annoyed.     IS UGLY THE NEW SEXY? The Complexities of Latina Sexuality on Ugly Betty Tanya González ABC’s Emmy and Golden Globe winning television show Ugly Betty stars America Ferrera as Betty Suarez, an intelligent Mexican American executive assistant who lives in Queens, New York, but works at Mode in Manhattan. An adaptation from the Colombian telenovela,Yo soy, Betty la fea, this television show works on a fairy tale premise: the ugly protagonist with a heart of gold will eventually obtain happiness by virtue of her goodness. However, Ugly Betty offers a protagonist with multiple love interests, constantly involving her in a variety of love triangles, begging the question, “Is ugly the new sexy?” The following analysis of Betty as a sexual subject demonstrates that Ugly Betty, within the limits of Hollywood representation, offers complex subjects instead of one-dimensional types. The show’s use of a Latino camp aesthetic continually introduces elements, like Betty’s sexuality, that push the limits of how we perceive Latinas/os on television and in everyday life. As a result, Ugly Betty surprisingly illustrates Chicana/o and Latina/o feminist theories about identity construction. ABC’s Emmy and Golden Globe winning television show Ugly Betty is a global iteration of the Colombian telenovela1 phenomenon Yo soy, Betty la fea (1999-2001). Ugly Betty, which premiered Fall 2006 and will end Spring 2010, stars America Ferrera as Betty Suarez, an intelligent, sweet, perky young Latina2 who lives in Queens, but works at Mode, a fictional representation of Vogue magazine. As the title suggests, people perceive Betty as ugly because she is not model-skinny; wears glasses, braces, and bangs; and has poor fashion sense.

Watching them, I saw myself, a member of the gay community, reflected on television. Just four days after the episode aired, the Califor- nia Supreme Court handed down its decision extending marriage in the state to gay and lesbian couples. Progress is happeningI everywhere we look. As we can see in the country’s current cultural and political shift, that progress doesn’t happen in a vacuum. When lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people are portrayed in a fair, accurate and inclusive manner on televi- sion, hearts and minds are changed. The more accurately the diversity of our community is reflected, the more opportunities there are for understanding and acceptance. In addition to Kevin and Scotty’s wedding, Brothers & Sisters featured Saul, one of the rare images of a gay character over 60. Transgender characters are appearing as regular and recurring characters in honest and nuanced story arcs on Ugly Betty, Dirty Sexy Money and The L Word. Young adult shows like GREEK and South of Nowhere, as well as the daytime drama As the World Turns feature multi-dimensional gay teen characters that go to school, live their lives, date and, yes, kiss. These portrayals make all the difference in making the lives of LGBT people real to TV viewers across the country.

    The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: How the Television Show Ugly Betty Depicts Fashion Magazine Journalists By Dawn Temples In the flashy, fast-paced world of fashion journalism, Betty Suarez struggles to prove that what’s inside a person is just as important as what they wear. As a budding journalist with a dream job, she exemplifies a fish-out-of-water with her braces, glasses and lack of fashion sense. Determined to work her way up at MODE magazine, Suarez tackles any task she’s given, from picking up laundry to single-handedly orchestrating a celebrity-baby cover shoot. Successful women at MODE are cut-throat and demonstrate many masculine characteristics that female journalists have portrayed in both television and movies of the past. Suarez contemplates throughout the show what sacrifices she’s willing to make to become a successful female journalist and eventually reach her goal of starting her own magazine. In the fall of 2006, ABC-TV launched a new television show, Ugly Betty, produced by Salma Hayek. The show, ‘Yo soy Betty, la fea,’1 was already a success as a South American telenovela that was first aired in Colombia, South America in 1999 and began to air in America on the Telemundo network in 2000.
