Flamenco Flamenco
FLAMENCO FLAMENCO 01. SYNOPSIS 02. DIRECTOR’S NOTES 03. CARLOS SAURA 04. VITTORIO STORARO 05. CAST & CREW 06. FILM DETAILS 07. THE PRODUCTION COMPANY 01. SYNOPSIS Considered the greatest exponent of the particular way of making musical films of Carlos Saura, Flamenco, flamenco arises, through a journey of light and life, the evolution of the songs, dances and music of this art that, in the director own words, would be heritage of the universe. With the experience and knowledge that Carlos Saura’s films have gained over time, we enter in the roads of the existing talents of this art so alive and dynamic that flamenco is it, to present his new film which uses innovative elements, in the technical field as in the narrative, becoming a unique production. The film shows that there is a powerful new flamenco, of young talents finding their way in our country and beyond our borders, but the reality of this art can not be reflected in the right way without some of the great living masters that we are fortunate to have in Spain. 02. DIRECTOR’S NOTES Carlos Saura It is always difficult to write about the ideas that lead me to create my musical films. It is difficult because the actual scripts I use are barely three or four pages long, where the different dances that have been chosen are in order, with the artist’s name and the space in which the dance might develop. It is even more difficult because part of the stimulus, the fun that always comes with the filming is based – let's face it – on the possibility of improvising in this type of cinema. -

18 JAN 19 28 FEB 19 1 | 18 JAN 19 - 28 FEB 19 49 BELMONT STREET | BELMONTFILMHOUSE.COM What does it mean, ‘to play against type’? Come January/February you may find many examples. Usually it’s motivated by the opportunity to hold aloft a small gold-plated statue, but there are plenty memorable occasions where Hollywood’s elite pulled this trope off fantastically. Think Charlize Theron in Monster. Maybe Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine? Or Heath Ledger as Joker. These performances often come to dominate award season. Directors wrenching a truly transformative rendition out of their leads can be the difference between a potential big winner fading into obscurity, or being written into history. The class of 2019 appears particularly full of these turns. There might well be as much intrigue in figuring out which will be remembered, as in watching the performances themselves. ‘Unrecognisable as’ awards could go out to Margot Robbie as Elizabeth I in Mary Queen Of Scots; Melissa McCarthy in Can You Ever Forgive Me?; Nicole Kidman in Destroyer; Christian Bale as Dick Cheney in Vice. Others of course have been down this road before. Steve Carell has come a long, long way since Michael Scott and he looks tremendous in Beautiful Boy. And Matt Dillon, who we’ll see in The House That Jack Built, has always had a penchant for the slightly off-colour. There’s probably no one more off-colour than Lars von Trier. Screening for one night only. At Belmont Filmhouse we try to play against type as much as possible. -

Allusion As a Cinematic Device
I’VE SEEN THIS ALL BEFORE: ALLUSION AS A CINEMATIC DEVICE by BRYCE EMANUEL THOMPSON A THESIS Presented to the Department of Cinema Studies and the Robert D. Clark Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts June 2019 An Abstract of the Thesis of Bryce Thompson for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the Department of Cinema Studies to be taken June 2019 Title: I’ve Seen this All Before: Allusion as a Cinematic Device Approved: _______________________________________ Daniel Gómez Steinhart Scholarship concerning allusion as a cinematic device is practically non- existent, however, the prevalence of the device within the medium is quite abundant. In light of this, this study seeks to understand allusion on its own terms, exploring its adaptation to cinema. Through a survey of the effective qualities of allusion, a taxonomy of allusionary types, film theory, and allusion’s application in independent cinema, it is apparent that allusion excels within the cinematic form and demonstrates the great versatility and maximalist nature of the discipline. With the groundwork laid out by this study, hopefully further scholarship will develop on the topic of allusion in order to properly understand such a pervasive and complex tool. ii Acknowledgements I would like to thank my thesis committee of Professor Daniel Steinhart, Professor Casey Shoop, and Professor Allison McGuffie for their continued support, mentorship, and patience. I would also like to thank Professor Louise Bishop who has been immensely helpful in my time at university and in my research. I have only the most overwhelming gratitude towards these gracious teachers who were willing to guide me through this strenuous but rewarding process, as I explore the maddening and inexact world of allusion. -
The Cinematic Voice Transcript
The Cinematic Voice Transcript Neil Fox [00:00:30] Welcome to the Cinematologists podcast. I'm Neil Fox, and I'm pleased to say joining me as always is Dario Llinares. Hello Dario. Dario Llinares [00:00:38] Hello Neil. It's great to talk to you. I'm really looking forward to this episode and talking to you about it. Neil Fox [00:00:44] Absolutely. This is a long time coming, eagerly awaited episode. And I'm pleased to say it's finally here. And I think that our listeners are in for an absolute treat. And yeah, you've done an amazing job pulling us together. So do you want to let us know what is in store? Dario Llinares [00:00:59] Yep. So, this is our episode on The Cinematic Voice, which basically has been about six months in the making. I had the idea about a year ago that I wanted to do another kind of audio-essay style of podcast, and I was kind of thinking, you know, what would lend itself to basically aural sensibility of podcasting, but perhaps kind of triggered this sense of the “audio-cinematic”, which is something I'm writing about right now. So, something that has a cinematic, experiential flavour to it, but is without the images, which is obviously a tricky thing to kind of manage. And yeah, I got in contact with various film critics, scholars that you will hear on this episode and I won't give away who they are. It will come up on the episode and I thank them very much at the end. -
