Upon his return to San Nicandro Garganico, his reading of the Bible and the visions he experienced led him to believe that Judaism surpassed all other religions. As he was convinced that the Jewish people had disappeared from earth, he thought God had given him the mission of recreating His people. After chancing to discover the existence of organized Jewish communities in Italy, Manduzio set about obtaining an official conversion for himself and about seventy of his followers. This paper endeavors to shed light on the circumstances of this collective conversion and to elucidate its causes by examining its historical and sociological contexts.. On the one hand it’s a tad funny, but on the other hand it’s very serious. Sometimes, I cannot control my anger when I’m on the phone pushing buttons trying to speak to a customer service rep. The recorded message tells me repeatedly that they value my time. But they are lying. I compliantly push all the button, giving them the last four digits of my social and my home zip code and then when I get to a real person, they ask me the question all over again. And it fills my heart with, I’m sorry to say, rage. Can any of you relate to this? A few weeks ago, I found myself waiting for over half an hour, dutifully pushing the buttons, to speak to the right person, only to be disconnected not once but twice. Once reconnected, listening to that saccharine sweet voice saying, “I’m sorry, that option is not available, “ I found myself bellowing into the phone, “Customer Service.” It was embarrassing. A machine had rendered my insane. So I confess this human sin before you. The sin of Sinat Chinam, baseless hatred. My confession has liberated me. 1 Seriously, hate is everywhere.     Pius XII and the Nazis by Darlene Shelton Background The year, 1860, was the beginning of a new era for the papacy. This era brought on a problem which was to take sixty-nine years to resolve -- the "Roman question." Prior to 1860, the Papal States comprised sixteen thousand square miles within the borders of Italy. Rising Italian nationalism forced the annexation of all the states, except the land immediately around Rome, to the Italian kingdom. The pope was protected by French soldiers until the fall of the French Empire in 1871. The Italians seized Rome and an embittered Pius IX withdrew into the Vatican, where he and his successors remained virtual "prisoners" until 1929. With the signing of the Lateran Treaty, the papacy did not gain its former secular power; however, the Vatican State was created and political sovereignty was granted within Vatican City. This "Roman question" radically changed diplomatic tactics of the pope and the Roman Catholic Church. The papacy maintained its world-wide influence, but was politically weakened. The Lateran Treaty was almost a Pyrrhic victory for the Church. The Church has lost many years in world politics, and its hands were further tied by the Lateran Treaty. The Church promised that all Catholic organizations in Italy would refrain from all political actions. The Vatican was empowered to act only as a moral and spiritual guide in the prevention of war. The recognition of the House of Savoy as the rulers of Italy was, also, to check any future papal ambitions. Pius XI announced that the Church and Italy were completely reconciled.

Based upon his forthcoming book, A Moral Reckoning (Knopf), Goldhagen’s essay is noteworthy both for the breathtaking scope of its claims and the air of righteous indignation that infuses it. Not content to argue that Pope Pius did less to save the Jews than he should have, as many other scholars have done, Goldhagen goes much further—to attack Pacelli as an anti–Semite and the Church as a whole as an institution thoroughly, and perhaps inextricably, permeated by anti–Semitism. In fact, he even argues that “the main responsibility for producing this all–time leading Western hatred lies with Christianity. More specifically, with the Catholic Church.” Such charges demand a thorough response.     Chapter Three Pius XII and the Third Reich Hans K. Weitensteiner On October 31, 1997, the Berliner Morgenpost pub- lished an article by Andreas English with the title, “Beati cation for Pius XII Under Debate – Critique Against the role of the Vatican during the Persecu- tion of the Jews by the Nazis.” The author reported that in the Vatican State, Pope John Paul II rapidly was losing popularity with many Cardinals. Despite great resistance, the Papal Commission for the Coop- eration between Jews and Christians organized a colloquium with the title “Roots of Anti-Judaism in the Christian Context.” The Pope received about 60 participants in Rome. Particularly auspicious for the experts concerning the situation was the complaint of the Jewish community in Rome that expressed their deep disappointment of not having been invited to this discourse. Nevertheless, one could foresee a clear condemnation of the politics of Pope Pius XII coming. Yet, many Bishops and Cardinals, so the author continued, urged the conclusion of the beati cation of Pius XII as a “heroic example.” In 1949, with the excommunication of all Communists, this Pope was supposed to have saved Italy from the being integrated into the Soviet sphere of in u- ence. Contrary to this, Jewish experts have criticized the role of Pius XII for decades. Only recently, the holocaust researcher Professor David Blumenthal, 108 • Hans K.
