2013 Winning Jockey Joel Rosario to Receive Hartack Award April 17 th

What: The Bill Hartack Charitable Foundation will honor Kentucky Derby winning Jockey Joel Rosario with the Bill Hartack Memorial Award. The anaual presentation honors the memory and lifetime achievements of Bill Hartack. The Foundation will also honor "" owners Stuart Janney III, Ogden "Dinny" Phipps and trainer, Claude "Shug" McGaughey III with the Neiman Award. The Neiman Award recognizes thoroughbred owners' commitment and contribution to the racing industry.

The Bill Hartack Charitable Foundation was established by the friends of the late Bill Hartack to honor the memory and lifetime achievements of the five-time Kentucky Derby winner. The Foundation, through its philanthropic arm, annually contributes to Thoroughbred racing industry charities and recognizes the jockey who rides the Kentucky Derby winner each year with the Bill Hartack Memorial Award. Hartack held the title of United States' leading jockey four times throughout his career in Thoroughbred racing and was one of only two jockeys ever to win the Kentucky Derby five times. Bill Hartack was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1959 at the early age of 27.

Joel Rosario is a native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, began racing at age 13 and turned pro at 14. He was the top rider in the Dominican Republic for 4 years before he moved to California to test his skills. By 2009, Rosario had moved into the top tier of jockeys, moving to fifth overall on the earnings list with $13 million. In 2011, Rosario won his third consecutive Del Mar and Hollywood Park titles along with his first Santa Anita Crown. He clinched his first Kentucky Derby win with a late push on the final turn, moving from 15th to 1st place, winning the race by two and a half lengths aboard Orb.

2012 - Mario Gutierrez , the winning Kentucky Derby Jockey aboard I'll Have Another (2012), is a native of El Higo, Veracruz, Mexico. He began racing in Mexico City at the age of 14, and moved to Canada in 2006 to begin racing at Hastings Racecourse in Vancouver. He won riding titles at Hastings in 2007 and 2008. In 2012, he rode I'll Have Another and won the Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita Park. Mario and I'll Have Another followed up with a win at the Santa Anita Derby, and on May 5, 2012, won the Kentucky Derby.

2011 - John Velazquez , the winning Kentucky Derby Jockey aboard (2011), began on his home island of Puerto Rico. He honed his skills at New York's Saratoga Racetrack, Belmont Park and Aqueduct Racetrack. John Velazquez has succeeded at winning races on the track while providing industry leadership off the track. As the top earning jockey in both 2004 and 2005, Velazquez has won over 4,200 career races, including six Breeders' Cup races, the , the and the Kentucky Oaks.

2009 & 2010 - Calvin Borel is a three-time Kentucky Derby winner and Louisiana native, who won the Kentucky Derby aboard Street Sense (2007), Mine That Bird (2009) and Super Saver (2010). The 2009 win was an especially momentous occasion in Thoroughbred racing as Borel rode Mine That Bird to victory despite 50-1 odds, the second-longest shot to win in Kentucky Derby history.

2008 - , Hall of Fame Jockey and three-time Kentucky Derby winner, won the Kentucky Derby aboard Real Quiet (1998), Fusaichi Pegasus (2002) and Big Brown (2008). Desormeaux, a Louisiana native, received the first Hartack Award. He was recognized for his 2008 Derby win and was honored for his two decades of achievements and victories in Thoroughbred racing.
