Darian M. Ibrahim† INTRODUCTION Everything is online now—the way we connect with others, the way we shop, even some forms of education. We keep up with friends on Facebook we cannot see in person, buy light bulbs from Amazon rather than making a trip to the hardware store,1 and obtain an MBA at night on our computers from the comfort of our own home after the kids have gone to bed.2 One area that has initially resisted the move to cyberspace, howev- er—eschewing the virtual world for the real one—is entrepre- neurial finance. Venture capitalists (VCs) and angel investors have long valued close networks and personal relationships when select- ing which entrepreneurs to fund, and they closely monitor their investments in person after they fund.3 These practices lead to intense locality in funding—i.e., investors funding entrepre- † Professor of Law, William & Mary Law School. A grounded theory analysis is undertaken using a stratified sample of records from Pledgie.com, a crowdfunding website dedicated to charitable causes. Content analysis of these records reveals three types of information sharing associated with successful fundraising (1) information supporting impact (2) information supporting morality and (3) information supporting external relationships. These information types are related back to existing literature on collective action to explain how and why communities of donors form around specific fundraising initiatives. Findings suggest that while most existing models of charitable crowdfunding adopt a view of information sharing based on dyadic communication between donors and fundseekers, charitable crowdfunding should also be viewed as a technological paradigm capable of forming action-oriented collectives based around specific causes, beliefs, and/or identities. In that respect the phenomenon holds the potential to decentralize and democratize the way ventures are financed and realized. Crowdfunding has seen a lot of exiting developments during the last few years, partly because of new crowdfunding platforms emerging on the internet, and partly because of new ground-breaking technology being used for funding purposes. Meanwhile research has not quite catched up with the recent developments of different models for crowdfunding. This study’s aim is therefor to give an comprehensive overview of the different models of crowdfunding that are being utilized by crowdfunding platforms on the internet today. A deductive content analysis has been made of 67 current crowdfunding platforms. The platforms have been analysed in order to determine what model of crowdfunding they utilize. The result has, apart from partly confirming prior studies, also produced new exiting findings on what mechanisms constitute some of the crowdfunding models we see today. A new taxonomy of crowdfunding models is discussed and proposed. The conclusion is that the need for a updated taxonomy, like the one this study provides, was well needed in order to understand the field.
