Renée Ridgway The Autonomous Surfer CAIS Report Fellowship Mai bis Oktober 2018 GEFÖRDERT DURCH RIDGWAY The Autonomous Surfer Research Questions The Autonomous Surfer endeavoured to discover the unknown unknowns of alternative search through the following research questions: What are the alternatives to Google search? What are their hidden revenue models, even if they do not collect user data? How do they deliver divergent (and qualitative) results or knowledge? What are the criteria that determine ranking and relevance? How do p2p search engines such as YaCy work? Does it deliver alternative results compared to other search engines? Is there still a movement for a larger, public index? Can there be serendipitous search, which is the ability to come across books, articles, images, information, objects, and so forth, by chance? Aims and Projected Results My PhD research investigates Google search – its early development, its technological innovation, its business model of the past 20 years and how it works now. Furthermore, I have experimented with Tor (The Onion Router) in order to find out if I could be anonymous online, and if so, would I receive diver- gent results from Google with the same keywords. For my fellowship at CAIS I decided to first research search engines that were incorporated into the Tor browser as default (Startpage, Disconnect) or are the default browser now (DuckDuckGo). I then researched search engines in my original CAIS proposal that I had come across in my PhD but hadn’t had the time to research; some are from the Society of the Query Reader (2014) and others I found en route or on colleagues’ suggestions. -

This Session is about some technologies you can use to anonymise your network traffic, such as Tor (The Onion Router). The first part will give an introduction and explain the underlaying technology of Tor. We will take look at how you can not only use the Tor browser for access but also how the Tor network is working. We will learn how you can establish a Tor session and how we can find hidden websites and give examples of some websites...So we will enter the Darknet together. Beside Tor, we will also take a quick look at other techniques like I2P (Garlic Routing). In the last section we will make a quick sanity check what security technologies we can use to (maybe) detect such traffic in the network. USD $1.00 = 6.0 Egyptian Pound (LE) (As of September 2003) PREFACE In response to the request from the Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt, the Government of Japan decided to conduct the Phase 2 Study for “Transportation Master Plan and Feasibility Study of Urban Transport Projects in Greater Cairo Region in the Arab Republic of Egypt” and entrusted the Study to the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). JICA selected and dispatched the study team headed by Dr. Katsuhide Nagayama of Pacific Consultants International to the Arab Republic of Egypt between February 2003 and October 2003. In addition, JICA set up an Advisory Committee headed by Professor Noboru Harata of Tokyo University between February 2003 and January 2004, which examined the Study from the specialist and technical point of view. The Study Team held discussions with the officials concerned of the Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt and conducted field surveys at the study area. Upon returning to Japan, the Study Team conducted further studies and prepared this final report. I hope that this report will contribute to development in the Arab Republic of Egypt, and to the enhancement of friendly relationship between our two countries. -

Background President Mohammed Morsi was the Muslim Brotherhood's presidential candidate in Egypt's 2012 elections (BBC 4 Nov. 2013; Human Rights Watch 16 Aug. 2013). He ran under the Freedom and Justice Party (ibid.; Al Jazeera 1 July 2013), which is the Muslim Brotherhood's political wing (ibid.). President Morsi was overthrown by the Egyptian army on 3 July 2013, one year after becoming president (AI Jazeera 30 Aug. 2013; BBC 4 Nov. 2013). Sharkawi & N. Ali (28th June 2020) Abstract After a brief interlude of democratization ushered in by the Arab uprisings in 2011, Egypt has taken a sharp turn towards authoritarianism. While political repression has disintegrated social movements and demobilized seasoned activists, the outbreak of the coronavirus has afforded an opening for new voices, such as those of healthcare workers who took to social media to expose mismanagement and malpractice within the healthcare sector. The article examines acts of whistleblowing performed by Egypt’s healthcare workers during a public health crisis, drawing on qualitive research materials collected from social media, trade union press releases, and interviews conducted with a small group of doctors and pharmacists. The article contends that individual acts of whistleblowing can produce unconventional practices towards collective claim-making prompting multiple forms of contentious mobilization. The findings highlight main features that facilitate diffusing and sustaining mobilization under prohibitive authoritarian settings. Introduction Since the removal of the democratically-elected President Mohamed Morsi in 2013, Egypt has taken a sharp turn towards authoritarianism. The new leadership has taken great pains to consolidate its rule, curbing in the process dissent and curtailing freedom of speech. Various political and legislative measures have been introduced to clamp down on unions, civil society and any form of grassroots organizing. -

Minority Profile: Egypt’s Nubians February 2018 The Nubians have been displaced for over 100 years, yet the government repeatedly denies their legal rights to resettle on their historic homelands in Upper Egypt. Dozens of Nubians were arrested in 2016 and 2017 for participating in protests against the conversion of Nubian land into militarized zones, as decided by the president and government. Nubians who have been relocated to government-provided villages suffer from poor living conditions and resources and ultimately experience the gradual erasure of their Nubian identities. AN INDIGENOUS PEOPLE WHO HAVE HISTORICALLY BEEN DISPLACED Egypt’s Nubians are an indigenous ethnic group who primarily reside in Upper Egypt, near Egypt’s southern border with Sudan. The Kingdom of Nubia in present day Upper Egypt coalesced as far back as 800 BCE, while the Nubians’ ancestors pre-date 5000 BCE.1 The Kingdom of Nubia had autonomy from Egypt through the rule of King Farouk. When Gamal Abdel Nasser overthrew Farouk in 1952, Nubian lands were incorporated into the newly-established Egyptian republic.2 Nubians today still speak Nubian languages, which are a group of related nilo-saharan languages whose written records precede the 3rd century CE.3 However, younger generation Nubians also speak Arabic, which at times is the language used in government- run Nubian schools. Most Nubians are Sunni Muslims. The number of Egyptians with Nubian ancestry is estimated to be around three million, less than 4% of the total population.4 Nubians have historically faced discrimination from both state and non-state actors within Egypt. Most notably, following their displacement throughout the 20th century, the government repeatedly denied the community their legal rights to resettle on their historic homelands in Upper Egypt.
