Steve was a beautiful person, an incredible husband and an amazing father. He was a true role model to us all on how to love and how to live. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Lamb family at this time. New Teacher Appointment Update Further to last week’s information, I am pleased to inform you that Mrs Amy Miller has been appointed as the new Room 2 New Entrant teacher. This is a fixed-term position commencing at the start of Term 2 and ending on December 14th 2018. Amy is an experienced Primary School teacher with 20 years teaching experience in both NZ schools and abroad. Please do join me in welcoming Amy Miller to the St Benedict’s School community. Introducing EPIC Edwina, the sister of EPIC Eddie This week in assembly students were introduced to Epic Edwina, who joins her brother Epic Eddie as a coveted reward for classes to work towards winning. Many thanks to the O’Styke family who planned, sourced and created Epic Edwina. Epic Edwina’s body is an old lamp/torch. Selected to symbolise leading / lighting the way. The EPIC values individually represent: Empathy – She is wearing a necklace with a heart to represent empathy Perseverance – She is wearing a watch on her wrist Integrity – She is holding the candle to light the way for others (with integrity, good decision making) Creativity – She is holding a paint-brush (with the four house colours. Our School’s EPIC Value Pencils – situated on the driveway hillside As a Principal, I often think to myself “So what do we stand for as a school, what’s our purpose?” Our Catholic Character is what sets us apart from other local schools, and leading off this is our school’s EPIC values. When walking up the footpath, I wanted our school’s values to greet people upon arrival; to portray a message that this is who we are, and what we stand for. As such, the decision to have constructed, four large ‘pencils’ displaying the school’s values at the front of our school was an easy one. But where do these values originate from? The answer: Our founding order, the Brigidine Sisters developed the values of empathy, perseverance, integrity and creativity. We link the values to scripture, and bring them to life through words and actions. Our values underpin everything we do. They show in how we treat one another, and how we prepare our students for life and learning beyond St Benedict’s School. New from Wellington City Council re: a Nicholson Road Roadworks Update Ngahina Kapua wrote to me on Friday morning informing me that the recent planned chip sealing on Nicholson Road had been delayed due to the forecasted wet weather. Ngahina Kapua stated in the letter that the Council would be back later in the month to complete the road works. Library News - St Benedict’s Librarian Mrs Janine O’Styke Reports: As always, the library is a busy place. The students have been enjoying the new books that have been arriving in the library, with lots of reserves on popular books and authors. We have also created a Book Hospital where the children can leave books that have been damaged. Our Year 7 and 8 Student librarians have been appointed and all 22 of them received their badges in assembly recently. They do an amazing job helping me at morning tea and lunchtime, returning, issuing and re-shelving books, and helping younger children find library books. On that note, a reminder to parents to please ensure all issued books are returned to school in a timely fashion so that others can enjoy the wide range of books too. Our lovely parent helpers have been busy covering new library books, readers and journals for the classrooms. We are going to have a parent Working Bee in the library this Wednesday 28 March from 7:00pm. Anyone is welcome! We will be covering more class resources and checking the shelves are in order. PSW NORTHERN ZONE FUTSAL TOURNAMENT – Mr Jared Bath writes: Over 120 of our students, across the Kowhai and Kauri Syndicates, have volunteered to represent our school in the upcoming Northern Zones Futsal Tournament. Due to the large number participating, we will need parent help supervising the teams. A paper information sheet has been sent home, please let Mr Bath know if you are able to help on either of the competition dates noted below. But where to start? We have three new students to the school (as well as a new teacher) who feel very much at home thanks to the welcoming nature of the class. We have students who jump up to offer help to each other, they take turns, they work incredibly well in cooperative groups to persevere through tasks, and you should see some of the creative written work I get to read sometimes. Consider Room 9 as a deserving recipient of the award, please and thank you. Mrs. Short. This Week’s Saint Benedict Award Winner…Mrs Sarah Wood Congratulations to Sarah Wood who was presented with the St Benedict Award in assembly by last week’s winner Winnie Newenham for her enthusiasm and energy which are infectious. You have such an amazing rapport with the students and your support is so valued. Well done Sarah for being nominated by your fellow colleagues this week. The highly sought-after Saint Benedict Award is given by staff to staff each week at assembly. Message from Father Doug Dear Parents, Students, Teachers and Staff We have now entered the holiest week of our Church year for 2018. The wonderful and powerful Masses of the Triduum, celebrating the Passion, Death and Resurrection of our Lord. I encourage you to participate in these most sacred masses. St Benedict’s Church will be privileged to have the Apostolic Nuncio (Pope’s Ambassador to New Zealand) Archbishop Martin and his Secretary Msgr, Edward concelebrating in these masses. The Archbishop will be the main presider at the Easter Sunday Mass. With every Easter blessing, Fr Douglas Shepherd THE HEART FOUNDATION is hosting FREE information sessions across the Wellington region to discuss living with heart failure.

The date for the last Wellington rep tournament has been released. It will be held on Sunday 19 July and will be a one day tournament.

Revenue streams continued to diversify as the market rapidly embraced streaming, which now represents 24% of NZ wholesale recording revenues. Although growing, streaming has not yet achieved sufficient subscriber volume to create the returns previously derived from physical product and downloads. Live performance, synchronisation and merchandising are becoming of increasing importance to artist earnings. The Music Commission maintained its extensive industry consultation during this year with both Domestic and International industry discussion and feedback sessions in March and April 2015, and 57 Outward Sound recipients taking part in a survey assessing the programme.

An initial examination of available 1985 light, heat, and water expenditures for 268 secondary schools (84 percent of the secondary schools in New Zealand) is followed by the selection of a number of schools for detailed investigation and for action. Three Wellington and four Christchurch schools were monitored with electronic dataloggers during winter 1986, both before and after action had been taken to improve energy management. In all cases remedial work was cost-effective, with pay-back times of not more than 2 years and in some cases of a few months. Savings in heating fuel costs through improved management ranged from 30 percent to 50 percent, far exceeding original estimates. Techniques used included walk-through energy audits, replacement of timeclock boiler controls with self-adaptive optimum start/stop controllers, runhour meters, and repair of faulty controls. Recommendations for further action are given, and a basic approach to an improved energy management program for the Department of Education is outlined.
