  • American Heritage Center
UNIVERSITY OF WYOMING AMERICAN HERITAGE CENTER GUIDE TO ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY RESOURCES Child actress Mary Jane Irving with Bessie Barriscale and Ben Alexander in the 1918 silent film Heart of Rachel. Mary Jane Irving papers, American Heritage Center. Compiled by D. Claudia Thompson and Shaun A. Hayes 2009 PREFACE When the University of Wyoming began collecting the papers of national entertainment figures in the 1970s, it was one of only a handful of repositories actively engaged in the field. Business and industry, science, family history, even print literature were all recognized as legitimate fields of study while prejudice remained against mere entertainment as a source of scholarship. There are two arguments to be made against this narrow vision. In the first place, entertainment is very much an industry. It employs thousands. It requires vast capital expenditure, and it lives or dies on profit. In the second place, popular culture is more universal than any other field. Each individual’s experience is unique, but one common thread running throughout humanity is the desire to be taken out of ourselves, to share with our neighbors some story of humor or adventure. This is the basis for entertainment. The Entertainment Industry collections at the American Heritage Center focus on the twentieth century. During the twentieth century, entertainment in the United States changed radically due to advances in communications technology. The development of radio made it possible for the first time for people on both coasts to listen to a performance simultaneously. The delivery of entertainment thus became immensely cheaper and, at the same time, the fame of individual performers grew.

  • Part Ii the Elements of Film
PART II THE ELEMENTS OF FILM 43 Historical Overview: The Development of the Image EARLY MECHANISMS The invention of photography in the early part of the nineteenth century by Joseph Niepce and Louis Daguerre in France was the first step toward capturing the moving image of reality, a dream held by artists and philosophers for thousands of years. Once still photography had been achieved, attempts to invent moving photographic pictures began. There already were mechanical devices that gave motion to drawn figures, ancestors of our animated films (Figure 1). There were also experiments that attempted to use the photographic process to give motion to images of real figures; a series of still photographs taken by Eadweard Muybridge in the 1870s with a battery of twenty-four cameras so as to capture increments of motion in a racehorse was projected on a screen in rapid succession to give the illusion of movement. But the final stages of the development of a practical motion picture camera and projection system had to wait until the perfection of a flexible film that could replace glass photographic plates. Soon after a celluloid film base was discovered by an amateur inventor, the first roll film was marketed by George Eastman in 1888. It was the team of William Dickson and Thomas Edison, however, who used the flexible film for cinematography rather than still photographs. By 1889, the rudimentary problems with regulating the movement of the celluloid strips through the camera had been solved, and Edison shortly marketed a box device into which a single viewer could peer to see the unprojected images in motion.

  • Lawrence of Arabia (1962), His Spectacular Biopic of the Enigmatic WW1 Hero T
Conversations about great films with Diane Christian & Bruce Jackson DAVID LEAN 25 March 1903, Croyden, Surrey, England—16 April 1991 (cancer). Biography from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia: “Distinguished British filmmaker of impeccable taste, not nearly as prolific as his contemporaries but a much better craftsman than most. He was noted for the care he lavished upon his films, particularly in evoking time and place and in extracting perfect performances from his casts. Lean entered the film industry in the late 1920s, at first working as a clapper boy for cameramen, later graduating to the cutting room (editing 1938's Pygmalion 1941's 49th Parallel and 1942's One of Our Aircraft Is Missing among others), finally wielding the megaphone (with Noëël Coward) on In Which We Serve (1942). The film that cemented his reputation-and cinched his first Oscar nomination-was Brief Encounter (1945), the lyrical, romantic story of a housewife (Celia Johnson) tempted to have an affair with a doctor (Trevor Howard). Lean's two Dickens adaptations, Great Expectations (1946) and Oliver Twist (1948), are very likely the definitive screen translations of those endearing works; the former netted Lean his second Academy Award nomination for Best Director. The ever-meticulous director chose his subsequent projects-three of which starred his second wife, actress Ann Todd- carefully and bestowed upon them his customary attention to period detail, mood, and characterization. Summertime (1955), which starred Katharine Hepburn as an American spinster in Venice, earned Lean another Oscar nomination. The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), his magnum opus up to that time, finally won Lean the Oscar, one of seven the picture received.
