You can't talk about Xavier University without mentioning Vincent Beckman. He has shared his time, talent and resources to help make this University what it is today. And he does so quietly and selflessly in the spirit of the Jesuit tradition.

"Vince really sets an example in our community as a lawyer, as a Christian, as an involved citizen and as a wonderful person," says Xavier alumnae Barbara Howard. "He has, throughout his professional career and adult life, put into practice those qualities which Xavier holds so dear: honesty, integrity, intelligence and compassion."

Beckman, a 1938 graduate ofXavier, went on to graduate from Harvard's law school in 1941 and its business school in 1943. After graduation, he returned to his hometown of Cincinnati, where he founded the law firm now known as Beckman, Weil, Shepardson & Faller.

The ways in which he has served Xavier are too many to list, bur a few include president of the Xavier alumni association, chairman of the annual fund, vice chairman ofthe board oftrustees and chairman ofthe 1831 Society. He, along with his brother, Paul, and sister, Irene, established the John J. and Robert E. Beckman Chair in Theology, which enables Xavier to have outstanding theologians on its faculty. The chair honors their brothers John and Robert, both Jesuit priests. He has also served the Cincinnati community in numerous ways.

He has been a Cincinnati city councilman, a Hamilton county commissioner and chair of the Democratic Party in Cincinnati. He's a former vice president ofthe Cincinnati Historical Society) past president ofthe Queen City Association and former board member of Fifth Third Bank and Cincinnati Financial Corporation, from which he just retired last year.

His honors include the St. Xavier High School Insignis Award and the 1986 Xavier Distin guished Alumnus Award. He was recognized for his Christian leadership in 1983 by the National Council ofChristians and Jews.

For his extraordinary service to Xavier and his community, for demonstrating his faith through action and exemplifying the spirituality ofIgnatius, Xavier is honored to award to Vincent Beckman the Paul L. O'Connor Leadership Award.

Cokie Roberts represents excellence in the field ofbroadcast news. She is a news correspondent for ABC News, covering politics, Congress and public policy; a panelist on "This Week;" a substi tute anchor on "Nighrline" and a news analyst for National Public Radio, where she was the Con- gressional correspondent for more than 10 years.

Since graduating from \'V'ellesley College in 1964, Roberts has progressed from associate producer to reporter to one of the country's most respected political correspondents and commentators. She's been called irreverent, reasoned, funny, articulate and hard-working.

Roberts, who literally grew up in the halls of Congress as the daughter of the late Hale Boggs, a Democratic congressman and House majority leader, combines an insider's perspective with a dogged pursuit of the public's right to know. Members ofCongress and colleagues have lauded her straight-forward style.

"What I so much admire is her professionalism," said former speaker ofthe House Tom Foley. "She has proven herselfcapable ofrising to the top and doing brilliantly. She's enormously well schooled, and she has a background which makes it difficult for other reporters to compete."

"She's tough as nails," one ofher colleagues and competitors has said. "It's a combination of humanity and toughness. She sets the standard."

Roberts has also received top honors in her field, including the Weintal Award in 1987, an Emmy in 1991 for her contribution to the ABC news special, "Who is Ross Perot?," and the Edward R. Murrow Award, the highest honor in public radio. She was also the first broadcast journalist to win the prestigious Everett McKinley Dirksen Award for her coverage of Congress.

Roberts' political opinions can be read in major newspapers around the country. She writes a syndicated column \vith husband Steven Roberts, a senior writer at Us. News 6' World Report, and her op-ed columns and other \vritings have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The New York Times Alagtlzine and The Atlantic.

Along with all of her professional achievements, Roberts also successfully manages a family life. She was voted I\.lother of the Year in 1992 by the National Mothers' Day Committee.

For her outstanding contributions to the field of broadcast news and for her commitment to excellence and integrity in reporting, Xavier is honored to award Cokie Roberts the degree Doctor of Humanities, honoris CIiUJil.

Jim Borgman has been called the conscience of Cincinnati.

Though he finds that "a bit grand," Borgman concedes that he does "row against the current" of the city.

As editorial cartoonist for the Cincinnati Enquirer, Jim Borgman helps us explore the issues ofthe day with warmth, compassion and -most affectingly- humor.

A Cincinnati native, Borgman joined the Enquirer in 1976, one week after graduating summa cum laude from Kenyon College. Though he says he felt in over his head in those early years -"I was laying track as the train was running," he recalled- some 20 years later, Borgman has earned every major award in his field, including the Pulitzer Prize, which he received in 1991. He was also voted "Best Editorial Cartoonist in America" four times by his peers in the National Cartoonists Society. In 1993, the society bestowed upon Borgman the Reuben Award, the profession's highest honor.

He has also received the Ohio Governor's Award, the National Headliner Award, The Sigma Delta Chi Award, the Golden Plate and the Thomas Nast Prize.

Borgman's cartoons are distributed to about 200 newspapers, including The Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, USA Today and the Philadelphia Inquirer. His work frequently appears in The New York Times' "Week in Review" and Newsweek.

Borgman's cartoons don't simply poke fun or lampoon. They make us chuckle, but they also inspire a good amount ofcollective self-reflection.

Two ofhis favorite pieces are good examples of this. One concerned the Indiana teen Ryan White, a hemophiliac with AIDS who had been shunned by his community. After White's death, Borgman portrayed him in heaven with the arms of a Sr. Peter-like figure wrapped around him, along with the caption: the place where no one is afraid to hug. Another piece asked us to define the "real seat of power in America": the White House, Congress, or a man sitting in a rocking chair reading to his daughter.

"This world can be kind ofcrazy. Sometimes we need to put our arms around each other and say it's going to be okay," Borgman says.

Jim has worked with WVXU, Xavier's public radio station, for over 13 years, designing special premiums used in numerous fund drives. In 1988, he was inducted into the WVXU "Founders Club."

For promoting compassion and understanding, for encouraging us to examine ourselves and the world we live in, and for demonstrating excellence in his field, Xavier is honored to award Jim Borgman the degree Doctor ofHumane Letters, honoris causa.

43 XAVIER'S HERITAGE

Xavier was founded in 1831 by Bishop Edward Dominic Fenwick, O.P., pioneer Catholic bishop of Ohio, as the first Catholic institution of higher learning in the Northwest Territory.

Known as the Athenaeum, the college's first building in downtown Cincinnati, was largely financed by European Catholics and particularly by Catholic citizens ofYienna. The first class numbered 60 students. From its beginning, the school was dedicated to the patronage ofSr. Francis Xavier. The Athenaeum attracted students from as far away as New Orleans, Mexico and Central America, and its educational quality drew many local Protestant students.

At the invitation of Bishop John Purcell of Cincinnati, the Society ofJesus (Jesuits) assumed control of the institution in 1840, ensuring a steady source of faculty. Under John A. Elet, S.]., the first Jesuit president, the institution was renamed Sr. Xavier College.

Xavier offered its first evening classes in 1841 and summer courses were introduced in 1914, thus beginning a tradition ofserving the unique needs and schedules ofprofessionals and aspiring professionals in the Cincinnati community.

In 1920, the college moved to its present site in Avondale, and in 1930 was renamed Xavier University, reflecting its growth and complexity. While women had been attending Xavier's evening college since its early years, Xavier's undergraduate "day" college became coeducational in 1969. In 1980 Xavier acquired the Edgecliff College programs and integrated them with those at Xavier, and by 1987, Edgecliff faculty, staffand students were moved onto the Xavier campus.

Xavier's growth in over a century and a halfsince its founding reflects its origins as a teaching institution which soundly prepares students for careers or graduate study or both. A Xavier educa tion, particularly at the undergraduate level, is marked by the emphasis on liberal arts learning contained in Xavier's core curriculum. Equally important in the Xavier tradition is the synthesis of human, cultural and ethical values; concern and respect for people; and an appreciation of the worth and dignity of the self and others.

The College ofArts and Sciences, Xavier's largest and oldest college, enrolls approximately 1,650 undergraduate and 100 graduate students, and accepts the primary responsibility for the liberal education of all Xavier undergraduates. The College of Business Administration enrolls 700 undergraduates and 1,200 MBA students, and is dedicated to preparing business students for positions of responsibility and leadership. The College of Social Sciences enrolls 950 undergraduate and 1,200 graduate students in specialized areas of human services.

Xavier has been an innovator in graduate education, establishing, for example, the first graduate program in Montessori education in the United States. Its graduate programs in education have produced the second highest number ofschool administrators in the state of Ohio. Xavier's gradu ate program in health services administration is a recognized innovator in the field. The Executive MBA Program, the Evening Hospital Administration Program and the MEd in Human Resource Development educate upper level managers, professionals and executives while they maintain their current positions in their respective organizations.

The seal of Xavier University combines three principal ideas:

St. Francis Xavier, patron ofthe university; theJesuit order ofwhich

he was a distinguished member; and the university. The five vertical

stripes suggest the coat of arms of the Xavier family. A right arm wearingtheJesuit robe holds aloft the crucifIX, signifying St. Francis

Xavier preaching Christ crucified. The three sea shells signify the three journeys of Xavier into the Orient. Above the shield is the

Jesuit seal, IHS, the first three letters ofthe name Jesus in Greek. Below is the Jesuit motto, AMDG [Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam],

which translates "to the Greater Glory ofGod," and the wordsVidit

Mirabilia Magna, a phrase from the psalms applied to St. Francis Xavier which translates"he has seen great wonders."
