Recent efforts to implement management zoning to Australia’s portion of the Coral Sea have highlighted the need for a synthesis of information about the area’s physical structure, oceanography and ecology. Current knowledge is hampered by large geographic and temporal gaps in existing research, but nevertheless underpins the determination of areas of ecological value and conservation significance. This review draws together existing research on the Coral Sea’s coral reefs and seamounts and evaluates their potential function at a regional scale. Only four coral reefs, out of a potential 36, have been studied to the point of providing information at a community level; this information exists for none of the 14 mapped seamounts. However, the research volume has increased exponentially in the last decade, allowing a more general analysis of likely patterns and processes. Clear habitat associations are emerging and each new study adds to the’ Coral Sea species list’. Broader research suggests that the reefs and seamounts serve as dispersal stepping stones, potential refugia from disturbances and aggregation hotspots for pelagic predators. The three-fold increase in the total num- ber of species covered in the current compilation is the result of both a larger study area and a recent increase in published ontogenetic studies of fishes by many authors and students of the morphology of early stages of marine fishes. It is a tribute to the efforts of those authors that the ontogeny of greater than 70% of species known from the western North Atlantic Ocean is now well described. It is the fifth most speciose saltwater teleost genus, and second only to the 129 species in the eel genusGymnothorax in the coral-reef ecosystem (Eschmeyer et al. 2017). Information on the systematics and biology of the species of the genus is scattered in the literature, often in obscure references, and, other than the taxonomic key to all the species in the genus (Greenfield & Winterbottom 2016), no recent overview of the genus exists. -

Abstract A checklist of shallow (to 60 m depth) reef fishes is provided for the Bird’s Head Peninsula region of West Papua, Indonesia. The area, which occupies the extreme western end of New Guinea, contains the world’s most diverse assemblage of coral reef fishes. The current checklist, which includes both historical records and recent survey results, includes 1,511 species in 451 genera and 111 families. Respective species totals for the three main coral reef areas – Raja Ampat Islands, Fakfak-Kaimana coast, and Cenderawasih Bay – are 1320, 995, and 877. In addition to its extraordinary species diversity, the region exhibits a remarkable level of endemism considering its relatively small area. A total of 26 species in 14 families are currently considered to be confined to the region. Criales ABSTRACT This contribution describes juvenile specimens of the cienaga wormfish Microdesmus carri (Microdesmidae) collected at the entrance of the estuarine lagoon Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta on the Colombian Caribbean. This is the first report of M. carri for South American waters and the third of the species since it was originally described from the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica and later reported for Belize and the Gulf of Mexico. Meristic and morphometric data of the Colombian material are similar to those described for Costa Rica but differences from the Belize and Gulf of Mexico material were found in the fin counts. The species is considered here a southern Caribbean endemic, whose distribution may be explained by geological and oceanographic factors. The gobioid fish family Microdesmidae is widespread in marine tropical waters and includes two subfamilies: Microdesminae (wormfishes) and Ptereleotrinae (dartfishes or firefishes) (Nelson, 1994). However, Thacker (2000) excluded the dartfishes from the Microdesmidae. Wormfishes burrow in soft muddy and sandy bottoms in shelf ecosys- tems from coral reefs to estuaries and from tidepools to about 40 m depth (Robins et al., 1986; Nelson, 1994). Seven species of wormfishes have been described for the western Atlantic, two in the genus Cerdale (C. fasciata and C. floridana) (Dawson, 1974) and five in the genus Microdesmus (M. bahianus, M. lanceolatus, M. longipinnis, M. lucus and M. carri) (Gilbert, 1966; Dawson, 1977).
