Small Arms Production in Russia REPORT Raising awareness about small arms issues in Russia Small arms production in Russia This publication was funded by the European Union Paul Holtom · March 2007 The EU-Russia Cooperation Programme (formerly know as Tacis) is a tool for the practical implementation of the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA), signed between Russia and the EU in June 1994. Under this Programme Russia and the EU Member States share their experience in a wide range of cooperation areas of importance to both parties, including, among others, small and medium sized enterprises, finance, local self-government and nuclear safety. The Programme is currently working on over 250 projects in Russia and is the largest EU Cooperation Programme in the NIS. Equal numbers of Russian and European experts participate in the Programme. Over 1700 projects, worth approximately €2.6 billion, have been successfully implemented since 1991. Saferworld is an independent non-governmental organisation that works with governments and civil society internationally to research, promote and implement new strategies to increase human security and prevent armed violence. Dr Holtom was also a research fellow at the Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg in Greifswald and the Centre for Border Studies at the University of Glamorgan.     Rostec to start developing 3rd generation combat gear in 2020 June 26, 2019 Press release JSC TsNIITochMash (part of Rostec) plans to start R&D work of new third generation combat gear for the military in 2020. This new equipment, replacing the Ratnik combat gear, will be called Sotnik. The new gear will include anti-mine boots, an anti-thermal suit hiding the soldier from infrared sensors and anti-radar camouflage suit. Other plans include introducing a tactical system using micro UAVs, where the camera stream from the UAV will be projected to the helmet’s visor or separate goggles. The electric goggles can also be used to display tactical orders, maps of the area, etc. “According to our plans, the third generation gear Sotnik will replace Ratnik already in 2025. This will be fundamentally new kind of equipment integrating the best high-tech designs of Russian enterprises, including those of Rostec. Thanks to the use of innovative materials and combining the functions of individual elements, the weight of the set will be reduced by 20%, amounting to about 20 kilograms”, said Rostec CEO Sergey Chemezov. Sotnik will use a “chameleon” material that can be controlled with voltage — a joint design by TsNIITochMash and the Roselectronics holding company. This electrochromic material can change its color depending on the masked surface and its environment. A helmet with this kind of unique coating was demonstrated for the first time at the ARMY-2018 forum. Rostec has been supplying the Russian army with a 2nd generation Ratnik combat gear since 2014. This gear consists of five integrated systems: life-support, control and communications, combat, protection and energy supply.

    African Warrior Culture: The Symbolism and Integration of the Avtomat Kalashnikova throughout Continental Africa By Kevin Andrew Laurell Senior Thesis in History California State Polytechnic University, Pomona June 10, 2014 Grade: Advisor: Dr. Amanda Podany Laurell 1 "I'm proud of my invention, but I'm sad that it is used by terrorists… I would prefer to have invented a machine that people could use and that would help farmers with their work - for example a lawnmower."- Mikhail Kalashnikov The Automatic Kalashnikov is undoubtedly the most recognizable and iconic of all weapon systems over the past sixty-seven years. Commonly referred to as the AK or AK-47, the rifle is a symbol of both oppression and revolution in war-torn parts of the world today. Most major conflicts over the past forty years throughout Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and South America have been fought with Kalashnikov rifles. The global saturation of Kalashnikov weaponry finds its roots in the Cold War mentalities of both the Soviet Union and Western powers vying for ideological footholds and powerful spheres of influence. Oftentimes the fiercest Cold War conflicts took place in continental Africa, with both Moscow and Washington interfering with local politics and providing assistance to one group or another. While Communist-Socialist and Western Capitalist ideologies proved unsuccessful in many regions in Africa, the AK-47 remained the surviving victor. From what we know of the Cold War, millions of Automatic Kalashnikovs (as well as the patents to the weapons) were sent to countries that were willing to discourage the threat of Western influence.
