Ainsi, un Aquitain sur cinq y réside. Les arrivées plus nombreuses que les départs constituent le facteur essentiel d'accroissement démographique. La prédominance du tertiaire et la forte industrialisation du département justifient une proportion des cadres et des professions intellectuelles supérieures proche de la moyenne régionale. Aussi les salaires sont plus élevés que dans les départements ruraux. Le tissu industriel se compose de grands établissements, notamment dans l'aéronautique, la chimie, ou encore la métallurgie. L'agriculture essentiellement orientée vers l'élevage est aussi une agriculture de qualité : de nombreux produits sont certifiés AOC, IGP ou Label rouge. Grâce à ces atouts naturels, océan et montagne, au thermalisme et à la thalassothérapie, les Pyrénées-Atlantiques déploient leur offre touristique tout au long de l'année. Géographie, infrastructures et chiffres clés Le département des Pyrénées-Atlantiques, limite sud-ouest de la France, occupe 7 645 km2, soit 19 % du territoire aquitain. Il est bordé, à l'ouest, par l'Océan Atlantique et, au sud, par la partie occidentale de la chaîne pyrénéenne qui constitue un tiers de la frontière naturelle avec l'Espagne.
