Sofia Coppola and the Significance of an Appealing Aesthetic
SOFIA COPPOLA AND THE SIGNIFICANCE OF AN APPEALING AESTHETIC by LEILA OZERAN A THESIS Presented to the Department of Cinema Studies and the Robert D. Clark Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts June 2016 An Abstract of the Thesis of Leila Ozeran for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the Department of Cinema Studies to be taken June 2016 Title: Sofia Coppola and the Significance of an Appealing Aesthetic Approved: r--~ ~ Professor Priscilla Pena Ovalle This thesis grew out of an interest in the films of female directors, producers, and writers and the substantially lower opportunities for such filmmakers in Hollywood and Independent film. The particular look and atmosphere which Sofia Coppola is able to compose in her five films is a point of interest and a viable course of study. This project uses her fifth and latest film, Bling Ring (2013), to showcase Coppola's merits as a filmmaker at the intersection of box office and critical appeal. I first describe the current filmmaking landscape in terms of gender. Using studies by Dr. Martha Lauzen from San Diego State University and the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media to illustrate the statistical lack of a female presence in creative film roles and also why it is important to have women represented in above-the-line positions. Then I used close readings of Bling Ring to analyze formal aspects of Sofia Coppola's filmmaking style namely her use of distinct color palettes, provocative soundtracks, car shots, and tableaus. Third and lastly I went on to describe the sociocultural aspects of Coppola's interpretation of the "Sling Ring." The way the film explores the relationships between characters, portrays parents as absent or misguided, and through film form shows the pervasiveness of celebrity culture, Sofia Coppola has given Bling Ring has a central ii message, substance, and meaning: glamorous contemporary celebrity culture can have dangerous consequences on unchecked youth. -

The films Boyz n the Hood (1991) and Kidulthood (2006) explore the current problems of the South Central and Grove hoods respectively, while presenting the effects of the historical construction of these spaces. Both are written and directed by black men, set and shot in the areas in which they grew up, John Singleton’s Boyz n the Hood (Boyz) and Noel Clarke’s Kidulthood intimately reveal the nuances of their hoods. Through analysing the two hood films’ depiction of race and space, the socio-economic effects on race relations in London and LA can be examined. The “Great Migration” in the US, out of the South from 1910-1930, due to obtainable wealth in factory jobs, caused a shift in the African American identity; black people were not simply associated with the South’s con- 4 notations of slavery. “Straight Outta Compton”—NWA (1988)
“Straight Outta Compton”—N.W.A (1988) Added to the National Registry: 2016 Essay by Ben Westhoff (guest post)* “Straight Outta Compton” LP N..W.A Gangsta rap existed before “Straight Outta Compton,” but N.W.A’s landmark 1988 album popularized the genre and serves as its standard bearer even today. The mythology of the artists behind its creation also continues to loom large: Eazy-E, the Compton crack dealer who used his profits to finance a hip-hop career; Dr. Dre, his neighbor who’d most recently been DJ-ing in flamboyant, sequined outfits for a song-and-dance group; Ice Cube, the ostentatious high school rapper from South Central Los Angeles whose writing gifts matched his aggressive delivery. But it was the characters they imagined--both militarized street kids sick of being humiliated by the cops and brash punks on the hunt for sex and cheap booze--that shaped the album, marching in time to Dr. Dre’s assault of chopped samples, wailing sirens, guitar riffs, and rapid drum machine beats, all of it more tuneful than it sounds on paper. Rounded out by the group’s other firebrand rapper, MC Ren, Dr. Dre’s production partner, MC Yella, and electro-rap holdover Arabian Prince--not to mention hugely influential ghostwriter D.O.C.--N.W.A reshaped hip-hop music in their own image. They called it “reality rap,” but in the beginning it was far from clear that N.W.A would rap unvarnished lyrics threatening the status quo. Dr. Dre and Ice Cube’s earlier music disparaged the gang lifestyle, and just about everyone in the group admired Prince. -

Ice Cube joins the franchise for the first time and will both star and executive produce alongside his partner Jeff Kwatinetz through his Cube Vision production company. Series creator Eric Fogel will return to executive produce as well, with additional showrunners and talent to be named shortly. Edwards: Realer than Real Realer than Reel: Menace II Society and the 1990s Hood Film Cycle by Timothy J. Edwards The convergence of numerous industrial and social factors in the late 1960s saw Hollywood studios for the first time invest in films produced with African-Americans as the target audience. This wave of Black-focused product eventually became known as ‘Blaxploitation’ Cinema. Blaxploitation films use cinematic devices like: location shooting, hand held camera, and sync-sound along with a showcasing of distinctly Black cultural imagery, featuring urban fashion, slang, Black nationalist politics, and of course Black popular music to create a Black ghetto chronotope which is common to all Blaxploitation films (Massood 117). While the Black ghetto chronotope has its roots in Blaxploitation, it has since become an important tool which New Black Cinema directors like the Hughes brothers further develop to depict the streets of Watts with a sharp and uncompromising sense of realism. Allen and Albert Hughes spoke of being “outraged by the Hollywood sentimentality” of the hugely successful Boyz n the Hood (1991), which was released two years before Menace II Society (1993) (Massood 162). -

Abstract I believe film has the power to transform people's lives and minds and to enlighten today's generation like any other medium. This is why I wanted to write my thesis about film distribution as it will determine the future of the industry itself. The way films are distributed, accessed and consumed will be critical in shaping our future entertainment culture and the way we approach content.
