This year’s program will not only provide the tools needed to deliver high-quality patient care, but will also address how to shape anesthesiology care for the future. The program provides sessions grouped by specialty interest with expert speakers from throughout California and across the nation. This upcoming 2018 program is shaped by the feedback from members and past CSA meeting attendees. CSA’s mission is to spark innovation and professional collaboration through education. We set out to emphasize the most positive aspects of CSA education—reflection on the ever-growing complexity of our patients, emphasis on interdisciplinary learning and delivering collaborative care with a multidisciplinary scientific approach. The program starts on Thursday afternoon with three pre-conference workshops that will provide participants with hands-on, small group teaching in the following topics: • POCUS/TEE/Perioperative Ultrasound • Advanced Regional Anesthesia • Women in Leadership All three workshops are designed to expand scope of practice, as well as foster the exchange of acquired skills amongst professionals in the given area.

THE GAS PIPELINE ANESTHESIA QUARTERLY GAZETTE Department of Anesthesia, Stanford, CA 94305 Patricia I. Rohrs, Editor March 2011 FROM THE CHAIRMAN At the Saturday dinner, we had video interviews BY RON PEARL, MD, PHD of each of the five prior Chairs discussing their RICHARD K. AND ERICKA N. RICHARDS PROFESSOR personal experiences leading the department. CHAIRMAN, DEPARTMENT OF ANESTHESIA [email protected] Although I did not have a video, I did provide comments on my own experience. During my first two decades as a faculty member at Stanford, I focused on clinical care, teaching, and laboratory and clinical research. Becoming a chair was never one of my aspirations. However, during the search for a new Chair, I met with the external candidates and was concerned that they did not appreciate what made our department so special. My decision to be a candidate was based on my view that the department’s future would involve building on, rather than discarding, those special attributes. ____________________________________ From the Chairman 1 It was my great pleasure to be the official host for From the Deputy Chief 3 th last October’s two-day 50 golden anniversary NIH Transformative RO1 Award 5 celebration of the Department of Anesthesia’s Center for Immersive and Simulation-based founding in 1960. Register today at www.cans1.org Attention Neurosurgeons Kenneth Blumenfeld, MD, President he California Association of Neurological Surgeons Annual Meeting is scheduled for January 12-14th, 2018 at the U.S. Grant in San Diego, CA! I have put together a program that will help prepare California Neurosurgeons for the future! T To say 2017 produced a tumultuous legislative and regulatory cycle would be an understatement. The 2018 CANS annual meeting will provide an update on where we have been and where we are heading. This information will be invaluable in navigating the complex healthcare delivery issues we will face in 2018. Highly anticipated will be presentations from AMA, CMA, AANS, CSNS, and Washington Committee leadership. We will also have the opportunity to meet and receive special “direct from the hill” input from Congressman Raul Ruiz, MD and Vanila Singh, MD from HHS. Other thought provoking activities will include a drill down session on sub specialization, fellowships, and CAST certification in neurosurgery. We will be introduced to the world of precision medicine and as always the resident presentations will focus on socioeconomic issues and be a highlight of our meeting. Bottom line is you don’t want to miss this meeting! PLEASE SAVE THE DATE! We have secured a fabulous rate of $249 for the historic U.S. Grant Hotel in downtown San Diego! This hotel is near the Gaslamp district and less than one mile to the Air & Space Museum and the Maritime Museum! This meeting is on Martin Luther King Weekend and this very popular hotel may sell out.
