In January we enjoyed a beautiful main course prepared by Anne Johnstone and puddings by local ladies so thank you very much to all those who take time to both cook, serve and come along to eat and enjoy company, it is always well supported and good fun.

Arlington Bookclub got off to a good start with interesting conversation about the two very different books. It is not necessary to read both or even either of these books to come along, everyone is welcome as we enjoy a coffee and chat. March 25th at 11 am in the community rooms, see bookclub feature for more info.

Community prayers in the chapel on Wednesday 25th March All welcome. At 10.45am and 12.30pm 15 minutes of prayer for our community, friends and neighbours

Bibury Literary Festival :: 29th March we welcome Stephen Tomkins speaking about his new book “The Journey to the Mayflower” at 10.30am in the Chapel. The illegal underground movement of Protestant separatists from Elizabeth I's Church of is a story of subterfuge and danger, arrests and interrogations, prison and executions. Stephen Tomkins tells this fascinating story - one that is rarely told as an important piece of English, as well as American, history - that is full of contemporary relevance: religious violence, the threat to national security, freedom of religion and tolerance of dangerous opinions. This is a must-read book for anyone interested in the untold story of how the Mayflower came to be launched. Review taken from Amazon website

Coffee and Chat :: Was your new year’s resolution to get more involved with your community? Or did you promise to lose weight, get fit or start saving? Have you given up already? Why not join us on the fourth Wednesday each month at 6.30pm in the Baptist Church Chapel for coffee and chat and talk about something that could really change your life for the better. What is true happiness? If you could change one thing about the world what would it be? If you could have coffee with God what would you talk about?

Come and join us … services every Sunday at 10.30am. Celebration service led by Cirencester Sunday 8th March 10.30am Everyone welcome! Contact [email protected] , see us on Facebook or www.arlingtonbaptist.org.uk

BIBURY CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL – Sharing a Passion for Excellence! January was a very busy month. For Christingle, on the 9th, children brought in decorated oranges which symbolise the festival and help tell the Christian story. The orange represents the world, red ribbon the love and blood of Christ, the sweets and dried fruit all of God’s creations and the lit candle Jesus’ light in the world, so bringing hope to people living in darkness.

On Wednesday 15th January the Bean Team worked with the children, inspiring them all to have courage, be positive and, especially, to believe in themselves! A parents’ workshop was held afterwards to share more about the work of the Team. Complementing this, throughout the term, Chris Andrew from Project Touchline has worked with the children in PE studying our core values of courage, perseverance and respect though sport.

On Monday 20th we all enjoyed a production of Robin Hood at the Village Hall and on Tuesday 28th we were joined by the very popular Kitchen Club and the children cooked a traditional Romanian dish, Sarmale, rice and pork stuffed cabbage rolls. Yummy! Suki Pascoe, Head Teacher. 01285 740268, www.bibury.gloucs.sch.uk [email protected]

BIBURY SCHOOL PTA Before Christmas we held our first wreath making workshop in the School Hall. Thank you to all that joined us and made the event so enjoyable – we raised over £300! Congratulations to Mrs Feltham who was the lucky winner of our December 200 Club draw! We hope you enjoy the voucher bundle. Congratulations to Steve Turner our January 200 Club winner who was the lucky recipient of 2 tickets to the premiership rugby final 2020! We have had our annual meeting to discuss future fundraising plans for 2020 – please keep a look out for news here, our Facebook page and posters around the village. [email protected] 6

BIBURY CRICKET CLUB Bibury CC held a very successful Duck Race charity winner presentation at the Catherine Wheel in February . The winner proposed a very deserving charity in the Motor Neurone Disease Association, Gloucester branch. A representative from the Charity attended to receive the award and gave a very moving talk about how MND had impacted his family and friends.

The AGM of Bibury CC will take place on Thursday March 19th 7,30 pm at the Catherine Wheel , everyone welcome. There has been a reasonable response to Terrys' appeal for funds to replace our ancient boundary fence. Thank you for donations so far to our Fence Appeal, but we have still got a long way to go... we still need further £4000.00 so any and all contributions will be gratefully received. £50.00 buys a post and three rails with your name on the post. Great idea for birthday or anniversary gifts!!! Preparations for the new season have begun with winter nets on a Monday evening at Rendcomb College. New players always welcome. The season kicks off with a league game away to Langford on Saturday 2nd May. The first home game is v Chipping Campden on 9th May with the first Sunday friendly away at North Cerney on Sunday 10th.

BIBURY AFC– Your Local Football & Community Social Club FOOTBALL TEAM UPDATE: The weather recently has played havoc with local football; however, we have played three games, and had only one game postponed since the last issue.

An away trip to league leaders Andoversford was a very close game in which Bibury AFC played extremely well and resulted in a 1-0 defeat. This was followed by the postponement away at Stonehouse. Next up was an away trip to Kings Stanley in awful conditions in which we suffered a heavy 6-1 defeat, then a rare home game resulted in a 2-2 draw against fellow strugglers Abbeymead from Gloucester with the Bibury goals coming from Archie Day & Macauley Messenger. Subsequently, that match saw the return of Todd and Matthew Boucher who have re-signed in a bid to help in the battle to avoid relegation from the League, lets all try and get behind the lads and support them every step of the way, as March is a big month in which Bibury AFC will need a couple of strong wins if they are to stay up.

SKITTLES UPDATE: Our Skittles Taster evening, open to all in February was a big success – watch this space for a second taster evening to be scheduled in our events calendar soon. The Men’s Team played three games in February, winning two against the Drillmen at Home 10-0 and then the Clubbers away 8-2. The Men are currently second in the League, with six games to play – Well Done all!

The Ladies had only one game in February due to Cup Matches, but please continue to follow our Facebook page for forthcoming Ladies’ & Men’s Home matches on a Thursday & Friday respectively.

EVENT UPDATE: We are continuing to cover the Guinness Six Nations Round 4 & 5 games throughout March live on the Big Screen with surround sound – all match viewings & updates will be shared via social media.

Our Fish & Chip Fridays still prove popular & continue to run bi-weekly courtesy of the Award Winning Cotswold Chippy. Everyone is welcome to order & eat in at the Club, with all condiments provided alongside our fantastic range of Wines and Spirit, Beer, Cider & Soft Drink bar offerings.

Don’t forget our Cheltenham Gold Cup Day at the Club on Friday 13th March, where we will be under starters orders and open serving light refreshments from 12.30pm!

DATES FOR THE DIARY: Fish & Chip Fridays March 6th & 20th/Monthly Bingo Night March 23rd/ Guinness Six Nations Live Coverage continues from March 7th/Cheltenham Gold Cup Day at the Club March 13th

BIBURY PARISH COUNCIL Defibrillator Awareness Session – will be held in the Village Hall from 7pm-8.30pm on Thursday 21st May 2020. The session is kindly provided free of charge by the South Western Ambulance Service – everyone is welcome.

The Annual Parish Meeting will also be held in the Village Hall on Thursday 21st May 2020 – following on from the Defibrillator Awareness Session. This is your opportunity to meet with the Councillors and you can of course raise any issues.

River Coln - ‘Hanna Meters’ have been purchased to check the levels of phosphate and ammonia in the . The tests will be carried out for a period of at least a year, to try and establish patterns as well as what the issues are.

Cotswold District Council has launched an online campaign to tackle Fly Tipping: The S.C.R.A.P. Code ● Suspect all waste carriers; do not let them take your waste until they have proven themselves to be legitimate. ● Check their waste carrier’s registration details, then verify them by searching the Environment Agency or by calling 03708 506 506. ● Refuse unsolicited offers to have any rubbish taken away. ● Ask what exactly is going to happen to your rubbish and seek evidence that it is going to be disposed of appropriately. ● Paperwork should be obtained. Make sure you get a proper invoice, waste transfer note or a receipt for your waste removal – this should give a description of the waste and provide the waste carrier’s contact details.

THE WEDNESDAY CLUB Those who came along to the Wednesday Club in February were treated to a superb speaker, Helen Plumb ,a jeweller from Winchcombe, who informed us about the sparkling world of Gem Stones covering everything from organics to inorganic gems, showing us their beauty, explaining their amazing range of colours, durability and ever changing cost. She showed us some stunning examples of modern jewellery using some lesser known stems and debunking the idea that only diamonds , rubies and sapphires are precious and valuable. It was a delight and she sang the praises of Winchcombe as a place to visit that we are considering organising a trip to Winchcombe instead of our Hall meeting in April.

Come along to our next meeting on Wednesday 18th March to find out more and to be amazed by Fi Passey of the Florists Corky and Prince creating some imaginative ideas using Easter Flowers.

The cost is £3 and will include the demonstration and simple refreshments and plenty of time to chat with friends old and new. See you at 2pm!

THE OLD MAN OF THE PIKE Here we are again at the beginning of another month and it is still wet (must keep going with The Ark) and there must be an end in sight, soon! Roll on summer and we may have drought orders in place. We have been luckier than some people around the country. Since the last issue we are now out of the EU and we have not stopped being an entity and carrying on as much as usual with the politicians shouting their odds much as before and saying “ wait till 31st December 2020” Nothing changes. The Water Board have been putting a new main in up the main road and it has not caused as much upheaval as I thought it would have caused. I am interested to see how it is done but it has been to wet and windy to stand out there and watch, there is still time!

Due to the fact we have had such a mild and wet winter most of the berries are still on the trees and bushes, spring flowers are coming out, catkins are blooming and the birds have started their dawn chorus. Just think what we have to look forward too, let us hope that we do not have a Blackthorn Winter and it put a spanner in the works? Still I am optimistic and looking on the bright side.

BIBURY LITERARY FESTIVAL If you’re thinking about buying tickets for the 2020 Bibury Literary Festival (BibLit) you’d better think fast! Tickets for the session with Sir Christopher Meyer, former British ambassador to Washington DC, have almost sold out, and other sessions are proving very popular.

BibLit opens on the evening of Friday 27 March with a talk by Diarmaid MacCulloch and ends on the afternoon of Sunday 29 March with a discussion about American and British gardens. Full details of the programme are on the website at www.biburyfestivals.com.

You can buy tickets online, and paper tickets (as opposed to e-tickets) are also now available at the Bibury Post Office, thanks to Richard Williams and his staff.

We’re also looking for volunteers to do all sorts of things – baking, manning the car park in the field opposite Bibury Court, serving teas at the village hall, serving wine at the two evening sessions and so on. We’re very grateful to the Kennedy family for allowing us to use their field free of charge.

If you’d like to get involved, there is a meeting at Bibury parish church on Monday 2 March at 6pm. Come along, have a glass of wine (soft drinks will also be available), meet the team and let us know how you can help.

One of the things all the visitors commented on last year was the warm welcome they received, and the great atmosphere and community spirit that they found here in Bibury. We all know how special this village is, but it’s great to hear it confirmed by people who don’t live here.

If you’d like to volunteer, but can’t make it to the meeting on 2 March, please contact Jackie Colburn at [email protected]. Victoria Summerley

BIBURY GARDEN CLUB I have the tiniest suspicion that everyone else in Bibury must be as sick of the endless rain and wind as I am. Gardeners tend to hate wind much more than rain, of course, because it does so much damage. So it seems appropriate that the first meeting of the gardening club will be focusing on how plants use reproductive strategies to ensure their survival in fixed and changing environments. The meeting is on 11 March 2020, in the village hall at 7.15pm, and the speaker will be our very own Val Smith, who has spent much of her scientific career researching whether various plants are suitable for a whole range of purposes worldwide. We will be renewing memberships at this meeting, so if you are new to the village, or to the garden club, this is a good time to come along. We have a great programme of events lined up, including visits to Cerney House gardens, and to Oxleaze Barn near Lechlade. Membership is £25 a year (which includes all garden visits, meetings and refreshments), or £5 per meeting (£10 to visit a non-member’s garden). We are always delighted to welcome new members, and guests. Please contact Victoria Summerley ( [email protected] ) or Jenny Lawrenson ( [email protected] ) if you have any queries.

COLN CRAFTERS Our next meeting will be on Thursday 12th March in Bibury Village Hall from 2 - 4 pm. You are most welcome to come and join this informal, friendly group of people to work on your own craft project, get inspired to try something new or just come for a cuppa and a chat. All are welcome. Cost £3 per session which includes refreshments.

A BELATED THANK YOU Our thanks from Cirencester Signpost for the support given by worshippers at churches in Bibury, Winson and Barnsley in the run up to Christmas. Thanks to collections at Carol Services, our charity has received over £1,350 which is helping us fund the provision of hot meals and outreach during the cold winter months. Last year Signpost spent £8,440 providing hot meals and £9,257 on advocacy and outreach. Our wider community covers 140+ people in need and of those 82 individuals and families needed additional intervention. Steve Morton, Volunteer & Trustee

THE ARTS SOCIETY COTWOLDS Wednesday March 11 th Royal Collectors: Victoria and Albert with Susan Owens Queen Victoria and Prince Albert expressed their love for each other through art. At every birthday, Christmas and wedding anniversary they exchanged gifts of paintings, sculpture and jewellery. They commissioned artists to record their lives together at Balmoral and Osborne House. Keen amateur artists, they made watercolours and etchings that give us glimpses into their family life. This lecture tells the story of these royal patrons and collectors who were every bit as passionate about art as they were about each other.

Lectures begin at 11.00 at the Warwick Hall, Church Green, Burford OX18 4RZ. Non-members are welcome (suggested donation £10). www.theartssocietycotswolds.org.uk

FROM THE PANEL Our request for help with the typing and collating resulted in a new typist Karen Gray, typing this issue. We are very grateful to her as it now makes our list of typists up to five - which makes the task of typing less time consuming as we each have to do only one or two issues each year. We still would like new teams of collators to help ease the load on our present four teams. Please let us know if you can help in any way.

ROUND AND ABOUT The last few months seem to have been somewhat depressing with the wet weather and strong winds creating problems for some. Some have suffered power cuts - some just for a few seconds others for several hours. Trees have blown down along several roads and footpaths and we hope no one suffered from major problems or damage to their homes.

On the brighter side the weather and the Coronovirus have had an effect in reducing the number of tourists in the village – especially the number of coaches. As a result, it has been lovely to see small groups of tourists enjoying the village without the constraints of being tied into a coach timetable. Sadly, we have heard of the death of two former residents of Bibury. Firstly, Leonard Davy used to live at the Pike before moving to Cirencester, where he died recently. Our condolences to this family and friends. Some residents and former pupils of Bibury School may remember Sarah Landers, the School cook in the late 1970’s early 80’s. Sarah used to live with husband Andrew in Arlington before moving to Tetbury and later to Penzance. Sadly, Sarah died in February after living with breast cancer for several years. We send our condolences to daughters Charlotte and Rebecca and family. On a happier note congratulations are in order for Tracy and Pete Major of Bibury Farm cottages who celebrate their 40 th wedding anniversary last month. Congratulations too to Karen and Marcus of Pudding Hill Barn who have recently become engaged and are now planning a summer wedding later this year. Congratulations to them all!

Several people are still in hospital and many have had the heavy colds and coughs that seen to be doing the rounds this winter. But at least the wet weather has been fairly mild and we have daffodils in the garden for St David’s Day on the 1 st March – truly a sign that spring is on it way. And finally, a reminder clocks go forward on Sunday 29 th March. How time flies!

VILLAGE DIRECTORY It has been suggested that the Village Directory should be updated, and Village Life is happy to help with this. The Village Directory is a source of information and contact details about clubs, societies and informal groups that meet in or around Bibury. While there are many clubs that report regularly in this magazine, which is most welcome, there are some other groups who are not so well known, so if you want details of your less formal group to be included please let us know. It is anticipated that this Directory will also include local contacts such as doctors, dentists, council, utility services etc. If you think we have missed anything from that list please feel free to contact us with a suggestion. Please note that this is not a replacement for the trade directory which will remain the place for business advertising.
