OSC_Christmas_Concert_ad.indd 1 29/10/2017 15:55:51 Chairman’s Report Welcome to the new Red Book, and as always, thanks to those who have put it all together, especially Hollie Byrne for finding so many great advertisers – please do support them. Photo Many thanks to your Masters for all their time & efforts, both on the hunting field (ably supported by the Field Masters and Secretaries) and also for organising everything else so well – we are very fortunate. I am pleased to say that your Committee has agreed to the current Mastership continuing for the next season, which I am sure will be appreciated by you all, and provides good stability. The Masters have decided to alter part of the boundary between the Monday & Wednesday countries, with Eastcourt & Oaksey becoming part of the Wednesday country, which we all believe will make for better days. Thanks also to our Joint Hon. Secretaries for all their hard work & for keeping us all so well informed with their weekly emails We have just had a very good week at the Kennels, starting with the Puppy Show. The Judges, Captain Ian Farquhar and Henry Berkeley MFH, were most impressed with the new intake, so hopefully we will have success at the forthcoming Hound Shows, culminating with Royal Peterborough on 17th July. As always, huge thanks to our wonderful Puppy Walkers & to Martin Scott for his efforts & advice on the breeding side. As usual we had the Farmers Drinks the next evening, which was very well attended, followed by a very happy Patrons Lunch on the Friday when our guest speaker was our ‘old boy’ John Francome MBE, who had great tales of his times as a boy/teenager with the VWH – clearly the Pony Club put him on the right track! As always, many thanks from all to Philip and his team and to Chantelle at the Kennels for their hard work. Sadly Richard Lovett has just retired after some 30 seasons with us. We thank him for all he has done and wish him every best wish for the future. In his stead we welcome Olly Street, who has joined us from the Crawley & Horsham. We trust that he & his Family will enjoy their time with us. We are extremely fortunate to have wonderful fundraising events organised & run by special people; a wonderful Christmas dinner/ show at Nick & Frances Phillips’ barn – big thanks to Stanny D’Arcy Clark & her team; a very successful Hunt Ball – thanks to Tim Kent, Tanya Nixey, Emma Bathurst & all who helped them; a great Point to Point (such a relief after last year!) with many thanks to Lord Bathurst & his Committee, lead so well by Scarlett Howse & the helpers – over 100! Alexander Bathurst & Alex Whitaker, with support of many others put on two “Fun Rides” in Cirencester Park which not only raised good funds, but clearly very much lived up to their name – with many coming from across the Welsh border! Emma Bathurst & Penny Smallman head up the Fundraising Team & huge thanks to them & to all who help with other events without which our finances would be very different! We are also extremely fortunate to have such a strong & successful Farmers & Supporters Club to whom we are as always very grateful. Lastly, I know that you would all wish to join with me in giving thanks to the farmers and landowners who allow us to lay trails over their land. We are very fortunate in their generosity and as always, please listen carefully to any instructions from your Field Master on the day concerning farming issues. Looking forward, my best wishes for a successful and fun season, & please give our Masters your full support.

V.W.H. Hunt Objectives “Until the Hunting Act is repealed, the objective of the V.W.H. Hunt is to provide enjoyable hunting by producing and replicating, within the law, as closely as possible the action of hounds drawing a covert in search of a fox and the ensuing hunt, emulating the natural behaviour of the hunted fox in the wild, with the use of an artificially laid trail. The Hunt will also continue to provide a lawful fox population management service on behalf of farmers and landowners with the use of terriers.” The Joint Masters 8 Subscriptions - Season 2020-2021 Subscriptions, except where shown, are for the season, with no restriction on the number of days Hunting. LUXURY VILLAS & CHALETS IN THE

WORLD’S PREMIER DESTINATIONS WWW.VILLAGURU.COM WWW.ALPINEGURU.COM V.W.H. Hunt Etiquette – The 10 Commandments 1. Follow the Field Master, they are the ones invited to ride over the land and know the best route and where we are permitted on a farm. 2. Arrive punctually at the meet, say Good Morning to the Host and to the Master and the Secretary, paying your cap before you drink your port. 3. Respect private and public property whether you be parking, riding or just standing; you have to balance letting traffic through quickly with not messing up mown verges! 4. Be polite and courteous to all be they landowners, visitors, fellow followers and people you pass (when you say ‘thank you’ use your hand and a smile rather than raise your crop!) 5. Always turn your horse to face the hounds so that you do not risk kicking a hound 6. Consider the safety of others especially if you are bringing a new horse out hunting. 7. If you are a trail layer, ensure you have your brief from the Master. Other people may bring their trail- laying kit so that they can help if needed. 8. Move away from antis, be polite and un-confrontational and report their car registration and their activities to the Master as soon as you can. You can photograph and video them. 9. Tell the Master about any breakages, work with the gate shutters and the fencing man to make the field stockproof. Text the master at the end of the day with an update as to whether the problem has been fixed or still needs attention. 10. Be kind and friendly to young people and visitors. (the V.W.H. is very good at all of this!) HUNT STEWARDS also known as GATE SHUTTERS Members of the hunt all help with these duties on a rota organised by the Hon. Secretaries. They are vested with the authority of the Field Master. If they cannot perform their duties they must find their own replacement and must notify the Field Secretary. Gate shutters are expected to:

• Wear white arm bands • Report any damage to the fencing man and • Open and shut gates for the field to the master and take time to help get things repaired on the day • Make repairs to ensure the field is stock proof • Text the master at the end of the day to remind • Stay out until 3pm him or her about anything that needs doing.

The Committee cannot stress enough the importance of this role. It sets the VWH out from other hunts and helps our relationship with farmers and landowners if it is performed efficiently.

14 Communication Via E-mail: The Secretaries send an e-mail every Friday with a round-up of information relevant for the hunting week ahead. This is only sent to current subscribers and ticket holders. Via Whats App: There is a Whats App group for each hunting day and the relevant Master will send a brief guide to hunting arrangements for their day. E.g. a guide to parking. Try to avoid being too chatty on the What’s App as you will be pinging about 70 people.

Emergency Warning System The e-mail from the Secretary and the Whats App groups will be used in the event of an emergency.

Members Area on the V.W.H. Website A new Members tab that is password protected is now on our website. Look for the Members button at the bottom of our Home Page. This will be used to share key dates and will be updated every Friday in conjunction with the Secretary’s Friday e-mail. You should get access to this area before the start of the season by e-mailing either: Sophie Scruton or Izzy Larthe.

Hunt Buttons Hunt Buttons are awarded by the Joint Masters. They can be obtained from the Joint Honorary Secretaries.

Equine Influenza In light of the ongoing concerns over Equine Influenza, the Joint Masters request that all horses that hunt with the V.W.H. are kept fully up to date with their equine ‘flu vaccinations.

Horse Casualties Horses can be put down by arrangement with The Kennels. Please telephone the Kennels before 10 am and leave a message on the answerphone for same day service. Tel: 01285 851 232. There will be a charge collected by the Joint Masters at the discounted rate of £175 for subscribers and farmers. Izzy Larthe is the Master in charge of the Fallen Stock service and can be contacted on [email protected].

Over the years they have funded a number of new capital items such as the vehicle used for Fallen Stock. All those Whisky Draw tickets, drinks parties, baseball caps and other activities certainly add up.

VWH Farmers There are approximately 1,000 farmers within the VWH country and their families and the members and masters of the VWH Hunt go back a long way with many a story in common. It is thanks to the generosity of all the farmers that we can still take a pack of hounds out four days a week. An average of about ten farms join together for each Meet that is arranged.

Loxley are a niche firm of solicitors who advise on the sale, purchase and letting of land and property across England and Wales. We are experts in what we do.

From a farm sale in Devon to the purchase of a sporting estate in Yorkshire, from taking on a tenancy in West Wales to buying a country home in Kent, we can guide you through every step of the process.

Rural property law is at the heart of our practice. Our clients include farmers, landowners and traditional country estates. Our thorough understanding of the agricultural and rural sector enables us to provide realistic and pragmatic advice.

Clients regularly look to us for specialist advice on difficult and complex areas of law, whether on agricultural tenancies or property litigation, family farming partnerships or succession planning.

We also advise those who are new to the countryside, who may be investing in agricultural land, setting up a new rural business, or leaving the city to seek a change of lifestyle.

District Commissioners’ Report: The VWH Hunt Pony Club is a friendly and busy branch, with approximately 150 members of all ages and abilities. Our popular camps have an emphasis on horsemanship and fun. All members can attend a 2 day Easter Camp, usually held at Rectory Farm. The seniors then typically have a 3 day training camp in the Spring with top level instruction to help them prepare for the competition season. The main “Pony Club Camp” in August is 5 days of fun, games and learning, held at Sterts Farm, Hannington and is open to all members aged 8 and above. And for the past 40 years we have held our legendary Mini Camp, also in August, at Shepperds Farm, where the under 8s enjoy mornings of fun with their ponies, followed by swimming and games after lunch. Our dressage, show jumping, eventing and tetrathlon teams train hard and continue to be successful at all levels. We are grateful for our strong links with the VWH Hunt. Our members benefit from three Children’s Meets, training for their Hunting Certificate, tours of the Hunt Kennels, and activities at camp including Hound Exercise and a visit from the Hound Puppies. With an emphasis on friendship and learning, this relationship gives our members the opportunity to understand the rural economy, its traditions, and to appreciate the beautiful environment we live in. Our District Commissioners are Rebecca Faskin (Senior & Junior Members) and Georgie Davies (Mini & Lead Rein Members). Children who are thinking about joining our branch are welcome to attend a taster rally so please get in touch if you would like to know more.
