NATIONAL YOUTH SPORTS RULES BASEBALL: KID PITCH: 5-6 YEAR-OLDS Applies to both practices and games. 1. The home team is listed first on the schedule and will occupy the third base side of the field. 2. Games are one hour and fifteen minutes or three innings, whichever is completed first. 3. No forfeits. 4. No score will be kept. 5. An NYS jersey and hat must be worn during the game. No exceptions! 6. Metal cleats, open toed shoes, or jewelry are not to be worn. 7. All players on the defensive team are allowed to be on the field. Teams will play with a limit of seven infielders and the rest of the team must occupy the outfield. Defense must rotate the pitcher position every inning. 8. Infielders must stay in normal baseball positions with the exception of the catcher. For example, the pitcher cannot be closer than 30 feet from home plate. 9. Coaches are allowed in the outfield but they must not interfere with play of the game. 10. Batting team must provide adults to be the first and third base coaches as well as place the ball on the tee for each batter. The coach may pitch to an individual batter based on their demonstrated ability to hit the ball at practice. Each batter will be given three pitches/chances to hit the ball then the tee must be used. Children who cannot hit a pitched ball at practice should only use the tee during games. 11. All team members must be on the batting line up. -

WHEATON YOUTH BASEBALL INSTRUCTIONAL LEAGUE SUPPLEMENTARY RULES Revised & Approved: February 15, 2018 The Instructional League was established as an intermediary step between Coach Pitch and Mustang League “A” Baseball for the purpose of introducing the skill of pitching to the game. The League is limited to those players currently in the second grade at the start of the season. This league, like Coach-Pitch, is considered to be an introduction to organized baseball. League standings will not be kept and All Star Day and Championship Day are not applicable at this level. League play will be governed by PONY League Baseball Rules unless otherwise stated in these supplementary rules. The intent of Wheaton Youth Baseball is to teach the rules of the game, develop skills, provide an opportunity for fun, and to teach teamwork and sportsmanship. MANAGERS AND UMPIRES HAVE NO AUTHORITY TO WAIVE ANY RULES SET FORTH IN THESE SUPPLEMENTARY RULES OR ANY OTHER REFERENCED DOCUMENTS OR RULES. I. GENERAL INFORMATION The American Sport Effectiveness Program (ASEP) has been adopted for use by Wheaton Park District Youth Baseball/Softball Board of Control (Board of Control). The Wheaton Park District will fund ASEP and will advise all managers of their certification upon the successful completion of the course. New managers are required to complete the certification within one year of entering the baseball program. ASEP managers will be given first priority in team assignments. It is the responsibility of each manager or their replacement to see to the proper conduct of themselves, their coaches, players and team fans. Failure to carry out this responsibility may result in game forfeiture, and/or disciplinary action, including removal from the baseball program. -

Christian Brothers Baseball History 1930 - 1959 By James McNamara, Class of 1947 Joseph McNamara, Class of 1983 1 Introductory Note This is an attempt to chronicle the rich and colorful history of baseball played at Christian Brothers High School from the years 1930 to 1959. Much of the pertinent information for such an endeavor exists only in yearbooks or in scrapbooks from long ago. Baseball is a spring sport, and often yearbooks were published before the season’s completion. There are even years where yearbooks where not produced at all, as is the case for the years 1930 to 1947. Prep sports enjoyed widespread coverage in the local papers, especially during the hard years of the Great Depression and World War II. With the aid of old microfilm machines at the City Library, it was possible to resurrect some of those memorable games as told in the pages of the Sacramento Bee and Union newspapers. But perhaps the best mode of research, certainly the most enter- taining, is the actual testimony of the ballplayers themselves. Their recall of events from 50 plus years ago, even down to the most minor of details is simply astonishing. Special thanks to Kathleen Davis, Terri Barbeau, Joe Franzoia, Gil Urbano, Vince Pisani, Billy Rico, Joe Sheehan, and Frank McNamara for opening up their scrapbooks and sharing photographs. This document is by no means a complete or finished account. It is indeed a living document that requires additions, subtractions, and corrections to the ongoing narrative. Specifically, this study attempts to establish a logical expansion and adaptation of Bale’s Four-Stage Ideal-type on the Evolution of the Modern English Soccer Stadium appropriate for the history of professional baseball and football and that predicts future changes in American sport facilities. In essence, it is the author’s intention to provide a more coherent and comprehensive account of the evolving professional baseball and football sport facility and where it appears to be headed. This investigation concludes eight stages exist concerning the evolution of the professional baseball and football sport facility. Stages one through four primarily appeared before the beginning of the 20th century and existed as temporary structures which were small and cheaply built. Stages five and six materialize as the first permanent professional baseball and football facilities. Stage seven surfaces as a multi-purpose facility which attempted to accommodate both professional football and baseball equally. -

No stealing, no advancement on passed balls, or over-throws, no wild pitches, and no balks. • Tagging-up on a fly ball is allowed. • Players on base may leave the base when the ball crosses the plate (no leading before the pitch crosses plate) but they may not advance to the next base until ball is hit into the field of play by batter or until forced ahead by a walk or hit batter. • No stealing but players may leave the base as ball crosses the plate. • Player leaving the base may not advance but does so at his own risk and may be picked off (and may not advance on an over-throw on the pick-off attempt). 2. Bunting is NOT allowed. 3. Infield fly rule does not apply and will NOT be called. Tagging up on a fly ball is allowed. 4. All teams will use a "Continuous Batting Order”. That is, every batter bats in turn, regardless of whether he or she is playing in the field or on the bench. Also called "Full Roster Batting". Only batters that cross the plate count as runs scored. See Rule 6 below. 5. Free substitution. Ten players (4 outfielders) Players may be moved in and out of the field positions at will, except for the pitcher. • Once removed as a pitcher, a player may NOT pitch again in that game but may play any other position in the field. -

DP/FLEX Strategies for Coaches
DP/FLEX RULE Basic Utilization Strategies for Coaches The following are basic strategies a coach might utilize to match the skills of the DP and FLEX players to complement one another. 1. Objective: Utilize a fast runner who is a weak hitter (FLEX) to run for the solid hitting DP. a. Matchup: Pair up a solid hitter (DP) with a player of exceptional speed but who is a weak hitter (FLEX). b. Typical sequence: DP hits safely; FLEX enters to run for her; DP reenters and hits safely; FLEX enters to run for her; sub #1 hits for DP (since the DP already used her one re- entry), FLEX enters to run for sub #1; sub #1 reenters and hits safely; FLEX enters to run for sub #1; sub #2 hits safely; FLEX enters to run for her; and so on. 2. Objective: List a power hitter as the FLEX player when you have a platoon of players who will be the DP’s. a. Matchup: Pair up an average player (DP) with a good hitting, but slow runner (FLEX) who also plays defense. b. Typical sequence: As the spot in the batting order comes up, enter the FLEX who hits safely; reenter the DP to run; enter the FLEX who hits safely; sub #1 enters to run (since the DP already used her one re-entry); enter the FLEX who hits safely; sub #1 reenters to run; FLEX hits safely; sub #2 enters to run; and so on. 3. Objective: Create a space in the lineup for relief pitchers who do not hit, while allowing the starting pitcher to also play offense. -

PERSONAL HITTING PHILOSOPHY & WHERE YOU FIT IN THE BASEBALL LINEUP Accurately evaluating yourself to know what kind of hitter you are can be a difficult, but necessary, part of developing your personal hitting philosophy. The great thing about a baseball lineup is there is room on every team and in the big leagues for all types of hitters. Understand Your Personal Hitting Philosophy A good hitting philosophy should definitely depend on what kind of hitter you are. Are you a player that hits for a lot of power, do you try to set the table and get on base for the middle of the lineup, can you run, are you a good situational hitter, can you hit to all parts of the field or do you mostly just pull the ball. Accurately evaluating yourself and knowing what kind of hitter you are can be difficult. The great thing about baseball is there is room on every team and in the big leagues for all types of hitters. Players get in trouble when they want to be something they are not. This is fairly common and a problem most young hitters face. Everyone wants to hit homeruns. But not everyone was talented in that area. If you hit one homerun a year and most of your outs are fly balls, you are only hurting yourself. The good hitters use what they are given and use it to the best of their ability. If you can run, hit balls on the ground and utilize the bunt. If you can handle the bat, try to hit the 3-4 hole (in between 1st and 2nd base) with a runner on 1st base, to get the runner to move up to 3rd base. -

Hereman Professor and Head Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics ii ABSTRACT The stolen base is an integral part of the game of baseball. As it is frequent that a player is in a situation where he could attempt to steal a base, it is important to determine when he should try to steal in order to obtain more wins per season for his team. I used a sample of games during the 2012 and 2013 Major League Baseball seasons to see how often players stole in given scenarios based on number of outs, pickoff attempts, runs until the end of the inning, left or right-handed batter/pitcher, run differential, and inning. New stolen base strategies were created using the percentage of opportunities attempted and the percentage of successful attempts for each scenario in the sample, a formula introduced by Bill James for batter/pitcher match-up, and run expectancy. After writing a program in R to simulate baseball games with the ability to change the stolen base strategy, I compared new strategies to the current strategy used to see if they would increase each Major League Baseball team’s average number of wins per season. I found that when using a strategy where a team steals 80% of the time it increases its run expectancy and 20% of the time that it does not, the average number of wins per season increases for a vast majority of teams over using the current strategy.
